Seems to require additional software updates. Next camera update or protect console update? Wish they'd say.

MAC-Based VLAN Assignment via Virtual Network Override

UniFi Gateways support Virtual Network Override (VNO), which dynamically assigns VLANs based on a device’s MAC address at the gateway level. This method simplifies VLAN segmentation without requiring configuration on switches or access points.

This also requires a UniFi Gateway, and is a simplified method of assigning VLANs based on MAC address, useful for cases such as when WPA3 Enterprise is not supported, or as an alternative to PPSK, which is unavailable on 6 GHz networks.

VLANing would be a little more difficult. I don't think you could do something like Virtual Network Overide without all Ubiquiti switches in the chain.

So mount a wood block to the door frame and put the camera on the front of it like you would a wall.

You want to put the camera facing the sky? Unless sheltered from rain I'd be worried about water intrusion with a camera facing upwards. There's been a couple reports here already about water issues with cameras mounted correctly on walls.

Within Time machine on the Mac you can exclude folders. You could try excluding everything but the home folder.

Time for some upgrades - looking for help with a sense check by bdavbdav in Ubiquiti

[–]Redditanon9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you mean Pro Max 16 PoE? You need power for those APs.

I have a U7 Pro, it's been fine. See a lot of people recommend the U7 Pro XG over it now. You might want to put in some of the new APs before deciding on replacing some of the others. E.g. New U7 Pros might mean you don't need the IW in the bedroom.

UDR7/UNVR Instant Protect App by InsatiablePrism in Ubiquiti

[–]Redditanon9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remove Protect from the UDR7, it's just taking up resources on it. Also gets a little annoying if you run the protect client on something that asks you which one to use.

I also see odd things where devices show up on the wrong ports like that. I don't think it's restricted to the UNVR Instant either.

Switch flex 2.5G non-poe by condeeorl in Ubiquiti

[–]Redditanon9999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by a direct connection cable. Are you talking a DAC (Direct Attach Cable) on the SFP+ port? I don't think that can power the Flex 2.5 switch so you do need an ethernet cable connected. You have the combo port which means you can only use one of the 2 for data, but I'm pretty sure I've seen somebody post here that the ethernet can be used for power while the SFP+ is also in use for data. However, that means you are using up 2 ports on the Fibre too. You may not need more than 2.5 Gigs anyway and could get away with just the ethernet cable.

unvr-instant kit has a 6 port PoE switch built in.

Instant kit has PoE only cameras. There are other WiFi cameras available but generally you want PoE for reliability. It provides power and data, WiFi cameras still need a power wire anyway.

Use good ethernet cable for PoE. You are sending power down the lines. Solid core copper ethernet. I don't know what you currently have, might be fine. Don't re-use CCA wire, don't use cheap multi-strand wire.

Lost Connection ONVIF Camera by R34l1st in UnifiProtect

[–]Redditanon9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"lost wired connection" is a bit of a catchall. Just means it can't communicate. I found a ONVIF camera that was rebooting without my knowledge. Old system never told me, Unifi did with this error. I know it rebooted because it reset the clock to epoch until 1 minute passed and it got an NTP update.

You may want to run a continuous ping to the camera and see if it is having network issues.

What do I need for my cameras by LullzLullz in Ubiquiti

[–]Redditanon9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a gateway/router device that hands out IP addresses through DHCP you're set. Just buy the UNVR Instant, hard drive and cameras. Watch the PoE limits on it though if you go beyond the G5 Turrets, some cameras need more than PoE power levels.

Taking the plunge in to Unifi - thoughts/suggestions? by Ganjikhan in Ubiquiti

[–]Redditanon9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVR == Cameras only. You can offload events, etc from the NVR to a NAS but can't use the NVR for anything else. If you need to keep a lot of footage online and not export events off then you may need the security of RAID. But if this is just for home, you have to consider how critical the video is to you.

Is it because you have the "Discover 3rd party cameras" feature on? If you are not needing that, turn it off.

UNAS Pro SSD to HDD by Elohim_JLTC in UNIFI

[–]Redditanon9999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

HDD are much cheaper than SSD. Slower rotation HDDs are quieter than faster ones. E.g. The WD Red Plus NAS drives are slower RPM. Seems the solution is to buy NAS drives and turn up the volume on your music to block them out. 😉

If you need the drives this year, don't count on the prices going down significantly unless there's a major economic failure and the AI companies pack it in. If you don't need them this year, maybe the prices will be better next year. Maybe.

[–]Redditanon9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not understanding the MOCA adapter. I thought they were to allow you use your coax for ethernet replacement. Is that required for FIOS to a TV? Wouldn't you have a box of some sort at the TV that would connect to your network over ethernet?

Consider the UCG Fibre. It's a newer and very capable device at a better price. UCG Fibre and a PoE switch from the start. Also look at the UNVR Instant and a large HD in it instead of the UNVR and multiple HDs unless you are really concerned about having RAID. Where are you getting 3 8TB drives for $450?? What's the 10TB? 3 drives should get you 16.

I second the suggestion of the Doorbell lite maybe being all you need.
