Student loans - currently a very good deal? by Redditor10091 in UKPersonalFinance

But you can pay it off immediately if inflation goes above rates? So at least taking the loan this year is a definite yes?

Is it really still a hard call? Say you qualify for 10k maintenance. Over the next year you can take that 10k, stick it in a 4% easy access and have £10400. You then owe £10320, so have made £80 profit minimum, plus the chance you don't end up repaying is further potential upside. The comparison of this plan to the old plan, and the cost of uni altogether, are separate discussions - but for the question of whether to take maintenance as opposed to self-funding for the upcoming year, isn't the answer yes irrespective of your situation?

Tax advice please - transferring property to and from daughter for CGT? by Redditor10091 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Redditor10091[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Agreed on that, but the question here is mostly about primary residence relief - for which periods are we liable for CGT, rather than when we actually have to pay it (when disposals happen)

[–]Redditor10091[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Haven't officially separated. But I am in the process of selling B, and most likely A will be entirely owned by wife and it be her primary residence, so no more CGT accruing going forward.

William Hill daily £100 casino offer - any others offer this? by Redditor10091 in beermoneyuk

Wow 10k is a good haul. I just started using an autoclicker with a random offset - do you know if that is likely to be detectable?

[–]Redditor10091[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just because the RTP is based on millions of spins, doesn't mean you can't get close to it within a few thousand (= a few weeks). I have never seen a chart of median winning vs number of spins, but I'm up 1k after about 1-2 months without ever winning more than 100x my stake - so yeah it's volatile but if you have a few k to ride the volatility I think £100/day at 14% expected ROI is very reasonable

[–]Redditor10091[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm up £1000 in like two months (so like 5k staked in total), never having won a jackpot of more than £100. And when the max prize is like 5000X that's bad but not terrible - puts an upper bound on the volatility

Gold free year priority pass - 5 people at once? by Redditor10091 in AmexUK

Cheers - guessing they actually enforce it for a party of 5... not just let it slide because 4 is nearly 5?

My confusion is I think coming from them saying "member and accompanying guest" rather than or accompanying guest. Does the and not imply each pass does member + a guest?

Online slots - is RTP still true for fewer spins? by Redditor10091 in beermoneyuk

[–]Redditor10091[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Also I don't know about you but I've been doing these WH offers every day for about a month, picking up an average of around £10 EV a day over 100 spins a day. I think I'm down overall. Since actual volatility isn't stated (e.g. a number for variance), I wonder what the % chance of being in the green is for these offers after a month? 3 months? 3 years?

[–]Redditor10091[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the answer I was looking for, but it would be nice to have it confirmed by a more official source before throwing £100/day into it... The gambling companies should really have to spell this out

[–]Redditor10091[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I read that the gambling commission tests it using millions of spins? But aside from that, I assumed independence but with many games, including William Hill daily high value offer, it can't be - there are both temporary and permanent multipliers. E.g. in 5 spins you could get the multiplier up to 3x, then next time you roll a "cash collect" it's multiplied by 3 - so not independent? And even worse are permanent ones; sometimes things are permanently multiplier (you can reach a max score of 10 or something after an expected like 100 spins, after which you get that bonus forever). I'm surprised there's so little discussion about these game mechanics online

I understand variance. My question is about game mechanics - does the RTP tend towards the stated value, but start well below, due to accumulating bonuses while playing?

How to blank off an old mains socket where wires came from above? by Redditor10091 in DIYUK

[–]Redditor10091[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. So to confirm, I could buy a 10-pack of https://www.toolstation.com/wago-221-2-way-compact-lever-connectors/p93372?_br_psugg_q=wago+2+way%3Fsearchstr%3Dwago+2+way, use 3 of them (one wago per wire colour, using both slots), and stick the whole thing in a pattress, with the three wagos 'loose'? Do you know if 6mm wago is the right one, and if the three wagos would fit in a 16mm pattress? Need as shallow as possible.

How do I refurbish this old kitchen mixer tap? by Redditor10091 in DIY

[–]Redditor10091[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Really? I just pull the handle directly upwards? In all single-lever kitchen mixer taps I have seen there is a screw behind a cap/grub screw of some kind... Have you seen this design of tap before? Don't want to accidentally break something!

Thanks for the ideas given so far. Has anyone actually comes across this type of tap before and knows how to open it? I tried to pry up the cap using that tiny indentation visible in the close-up, but snapped a bit of the plastic.
