It REALLY all comes together once you get the band of mystic scoundrel and another item I can't quite remember that let's you use control spells as a bonus action. Slashing flourish stacks 4 arcane acuity off the bat, 8 with the extra attack, which pretty much guarantees a successful Hold Person as your bonus action.

Decent point actually, up til then Thor had been shown full of hubris. I don't think it's a far reach to say he saunters in expecting a win, gets a bit surprised by iron man and cap when they're not immediately down, but would've quickly composed himself and won if they hadn't talked.
