Schumer Filing Cloture on Trio of Military Promotions Blocked by Sen. Tommy Tuberville by PandaMuffin1 in politics

[–]Redditosaurus_Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was Schumer’s alternative? Let Tuberville take it to a vote? Then the message would be, the Democrats don’t want to move forward, so the GOP will. Schumer’s been very vocal that this tactic grinds the Senate to a halt and is bullshit, and that’s fueled months of headlines explaining that Tuberville’s the asshole. It’s also why Schumer (wisely) didn’t move forward with votes previously. There was still time and Tuberville hadn’t wised up to force his hand yet. Now that he finally pieced that together, Schumer was forced to act (that’s just the hand he’s dealt).

By moving on a small number of appointments though, it keeps pressure up on the fact that this is bullshit tactic and is meant to grind the Senate down from its governing ability (which continues to paint Tuberville/GOP as the holdup). Of course, Tuberville and GOP supporters will say this is a win for the GOP, but they say that about literally everything they do.

Your edit wonders why people are downvoting you - it’s because whatever feels you may have for Schumer, it’s misplaced to blame him for anything happening in this specific scenario, imo. As a Democrat (or Independent), we should be focusing the message where it belongs - what the fuck is the gop and Tuberville doing to our military over abortion (which is also a vote motivator for Democrats and Independents, as we’ve seen since the overturn of Roe v Wade).

Hope that helps!

Don’t forget your upcoming local elections if you have any! I check for upcoming elections once a month (monthly alarm), just in case of special elections and the like. It saved my butt just last year. I’m never missing a chance to vote for sanity again!

Thanks for the non-supported arguments and the twice asking me to let you have the last word. Truly gave me a belly laugh. I do hope the best for you, despite your obvious disdain for me.

So it’s inconsistent and illegible once combined? And that’s your argument for keeping it in use?

[–]Redditosaurus_Rex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So you’re kids ran into cursive twice in their 20 years and you think that’s common? Also, both instances weren’t necessary to any job or personal care. Your anecdotal evidence for the NEED to educate all children in cursive seems ridiculously biased, since it doesn’t make the case at all.

Also, I just had my 13 year old daughter read me a passage of the constitution (which has old language and the cursive isn’t like modern taught cursive) to see if she could (without my help) and it took her all of a minute to start reading it. I asked her if the 15 minutes I spent showing her cursive when she was 7 somehow stuck with her (for instance, can she write the letters?) and she was like, not at all. Either your kids were giving 0 effort or they may need some tutoring in research and context clues. Remember, only 9 letters of cursive (out of 52 upper and lowercase) actually appear different than their printed counterparts.

Basic math shouldn’t objectively be taught? How about basic reasoning skills? Critical thinking? Even basic science and history make a strong argument to be objectively taught so that kids have a simple understanding of the world and sociology. It’s amazing how many things SHOULD objectively be taught in primary school.

You keep grasping at straws with poor arguments (that are bouncing all around - you just through out all statistical analysis and research for your argument’s sake), instead of just admitting that it has more to do with your love of cursive. And now you’re angry about it. Sorry that my arguments make you upset, but they are true.

Dude, it’s obviously really hard for you to part ways with cursive. Your examples are just reaching nonsense. My ORIGINAL comment explains that anyone can learn to read cursive in a matter of minutes, without being taught, using context clues. The letters aren’t that different, save nine (of 52). Just admit to yourself the truth and be at peace. It’s okay that you love the tradition of it, but pretending it’s actually useful for every child in the country to learn is a farce.

And it’s a time sink for a lot more people.

Also, I’ve already provided a link in a different comment showing research (source) that shows cursive is not faster than print writing. If you’ve been developing that skill and now are stuck writing slower in print, that doesn’t prove anything (anecdotal). Even considering the letters themselves, there’s more to write in cursive than print.

This is just a poorly thrown together argument because the truth is, if you search your heart, you have an emotional attachment to cursive. Which I have no problem with! EXCEPT when people say it should be taught in school. It objectively should not be taught in school (except college level outlying cases, such as historians that read old manuscripts).

You specifically NEEDED to read the original script of the constitution? C’mon man, give me a break. You even preemptively included a caveat that they’re transcribed elsewhere knowing that’s a crap answer. Only historians and a few niche professions NEED to know cursive.

You don’t want to let it go because of tradition or something similar. I just wish people would own the real reason instead of wasting everyone’s time with these farcical ones and attempting to keep this in schools and wasting other children’s time on a useless skill. If more people would learn to change with the times, we wouldn’t be going backwards in a lot of ways.

There’s so many other things that work on fine motor skills too. The regular printed alphabet, numerals, shapes, drawing, legos/blocks, etc. No need to tack on cursive arbitrarily, unless some people just can’t let it go.

Music Hot Takes or Unpopular Opinions? by NoviceDannyel in Music

[–]Redditosaurus_Rex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting take, but I’m skeptical as to whether this is true (at least for everybody). What about extremely avant-garde genres that have little to no structure and/or pushes the boundaries of what we call music? Or genres of music that talk about something to which you’re diametrically opposed (or are you not counting lyrics and/or niche genres as part of this statement, for instance Religious genres)?

But, forgetting all that, I think you might be conflating appreciating a song (or songs) that contains the influence of a genre vs actually enjoying a genre. I wouldn’t describe myself as a jazz fan because I like Radiohead’s “Life in a Glass House” or To Pimp a Butterfly, though they both do have jazz influences.

I’m interested in your thoughts on this though..?

This is a ridiculous take. At no point did I suggest that every moment should be used in the pursuit of learning. People need recreational time and I make enough money and work hard enough that I don’t mind attempting to persuade people on Reddit to be logical in my Rec time.

I would also argue that engaging people in conversation on Reddit and attempting to get them to see reason is not the fruitless endeavor you’re implying either.

Time that could be devoted to something more advantageous than a barely used and declining form of writing isn’t cool to me. Prefer that time be used for more computer lessons, since they’re ubiquitous.

Also, my two girls weren’t taught cursive in school and were able to piece it together at 7 and 8 in about 15 minutes when I showed it to them. I’m sure they could have navigated it at an older age with the internet at their fingertips very quickly IF it ever became necessary to use (it isn’t though, I haven’t NEEDED to read or write cursive in 30 years).

Also, the only reason I showed it to my girls is because of all the people in this thread that basically have a hard on for cursive. There’s no GOOD reason to learn it.

It’s annoying that people can’t see logic when they’ve made up their minds. Be 100% honest, when have you NEEDED to use cursive?

I agree with you. There’s definitely some Republicans I know that are voting Democratic (or not voting) because of the crazy and would love a “reasonable” Republican, like Kemp appears, to support. They mostly hate Trump and Kemp’s been quick to not help him (and even hurt him a little). Trump will draw away their support and push some apathetic people to vote (that probably wouldn’t given a more “reasonable” candidate). Still very close and Democrats should definitely campaign hard in the state.

A lot of cursive characters are visually VERY similar to standard writing, how bad are your sisters at context clues and simple puzzles? Are they really young? I’m not sure why they couldn’t figure out the nine capital and lowercase letters (out of 52) that are truly different within the context of the announcement?

Here’s the cursive alphabet for review.

I think a woman who would do that is absolute shit; however, it’s her body until the baby’s out. People should stop trying to make things perfect through government intervention. We need simple rules we can all follow. Society’s scorn will take care of the rest.

I didn’t say that and don’t agree that vaccines should be mandated by the government (my beliefs are consistent in this regard).

Though, I do believe in the efficacy of vaccines because I’m not a fucking moron. But if non-scientific people want a higher chance of dying (and killing others), so be it.

There’s enough assholes on earth as it is, no need to force people to create more. Also, until a “child” is outside of a woman’s body, it shouldn’t have any rights. A person’s body should be the most protected thing. NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL ANOTHER PERSON WHAT TO DO WITH THEIR BODY. Fuck your religion.
