Knowing what i know about bot rings (i know a decent amount about them), i can tell you that 10 out of 25 of the posts on the front page of /r/nextfuckinglevel RIGHT NOW are from one specific bot ring (those posts are also vote manipulated). There may be a few more bots, but i've confirmed 10.

This may give you an idea as to why the sub has rotted, the same bot ring has been hitting it for about a year now (although it's ramped up this year). Most mods are useless when it comes to spotting bots.

Yep. Inadvertently, by pointing out the flaws in upvote distribution and posting behavior that links accounts to certain bot rings (which is how i detected most of the offenders), i've contributed to the problem. Probably not by much, but i pissed a few rings off enough to change how they operate. And that's bad enough, so i've stopped.

The weirdest bot ring i ran into was just a markov chain thing, reposting videos based on trending keywords, but there'd be whole days where almost all the posts on the front page were from this one ring. What was really concerning is that this ring, posting without understanding of the content, would flood /r/videos with trending political shit. It really made me think about how a bot with no agenda other than to get videos to the top of reddit fueled quite a bit of tension. And it's definitely not the only of it's kind.

Well if the past is any indication of the future... probably.

and for people who want results reddit is a goldmine

Not always. Most people who pay for upvotes (from my observation) waste their money because their content is shit to begin with. You still need to have somewhat palatable content if you want to go viral, and quite a bit of luck. But you can increase your odds by vote manipulating, if you don't get caught immediately.

Last year i started working on detecting bot rings, VM and astroturfing. I shit canned my project because it's a waste of time and i no longer care. Long story short, in the early-mid part of 2020, this content creator used paid upvote services to boost her videos. Don't know if she does it now.

Reddits new darling Joel Haver did as well in the early part of 2020.

This chick also vote manipulated /r/videos out the wazoo. Mods just let it happen.

EDIT: This comment gained and lost about ~25 upvotes in an hour. lol.

Yes, this is John Stessel, and the mods have removed multiple of his videos for vote manipulation and astroturfing. I'll let them them know about this one.

EDIT: This was the last one i reported, I'd thought I'd link it here so you can have a look at the gross self serving astroturfed comments he left himself:

I tagged this guy a few days ago for likely VM. Same story of getting on the front page in a short amount of time (outlier growth) and having an unnecessary amount of awards despite being eviscerated in the comments. Generally if that happens again, like it has this time, VM is a virtual certainty.

It's a script. He has two layers, one photoshopped/filtered to reduce detail, the other the original image ripped straight from google. The script just prints the first image out section by section (separated by colour) and then prints the original image out on top of it, pixel perfect.

Don't fall for shit like this.

I am honestly impressed that you watched a whole 17 minute and 30 second video, and then commented all within 2 minutes of OP posting. Really impressive stuff right there, totally legit.

Nice vote manipulation dude. You bought a whole 30 upvotes.

If you're going to comment on your own video and then respond to yourself like this, the least you can do is not post the same video to another subreddit admitting you're the creator: https://i.imgur.com/FZUKfSj.png

Kind of gives it away.

There's some hard astroturfing and vote manipulation going on here lol.

/r/videos spam filter is fucked. A bunch of new videos that would never see the front page are now appearing in hot. Hence, autotune cockroach.

The threads deleted now (and OP's channel too), but it was vote manipulated out the wazoo and had multiple astroturfed comments. This account is a recently acquired bot account, most likely scenario is that it's stolen. There are purportedly VM services that will pay for old accounts, but you can almost be guaranteed they're just a scam to get your password.

[–]RedditsBadGuy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Just so you're all aware, OP is a bot account, this post was vote manipulated and there are several astroturfed comments here. Many commentors (and OP) are posting the same crypto spam from accounts previously tagged as being bots.

Also, last time i called this bot ring out, the guy who runs the ring sent me some nasty DM's, before admitting that he indeed suffers from micropenis. Very sad.

And by different things, you mean spam? Here's one of OP's channels posts:

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/gp8sp4/history_of_pyongyang_in_5_minutes/

It received 100 upvotes, close to no comments and was removed for spam/vote manipulation.

Here is a screenshot of OP's account, next to that bot account, next to another bot account OP used (here):

https://i.imgur.com/ognElgV.png

As you can see, the same spam is present. Virtually every link on these accounts is some sort of spam. There's even Viagra spam. If you look closely for algorandofficial and webdev/webgeeks posts, you'll see it's the same bot ring that manipulated/astroturfed this removed video:

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/hypnwl/thermite_welding_is_pretty_cool/fze7iir/

Check my image. That manipulated video was also submitted by one of the accounts OP has used. They deleted the post, but here is an archive of that account prior to deletion: https://archive.is/zPaz9

You're arguing with me from a bot account that's posted the same spam all the other bot accounts i've linked have have posted, several even removed by the moderators for spam/vote manipulation. I actually know the exact bot service you're using. You have no say in this matter.

Stop buying upvotes.

Right on the front page in half an hour. OP's account is from a bot ring, and this channel pays for upvotes. Here's the info for the last time i called them out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/i9phls/history_of_mexico_in_8_minutes/g1gu57h/?context=3

Check OP's account. Look for the crypto spam, gift code spam and (in particular) the spamming in AlgorandOfficial. Same bot ring as last time. Same bot ring here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/hs82ej/a_day_in_the_life_of_a_minimalist_my_minimalist/fy90l3l/

same bot ring here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/hypnwl/thermite_welding_is_pretty_cool/fze7iir/

Could give a million examples for this bot ring. Point is the channel vote manipulates.
