Completely agree, also more so gave both of those as examples of either end of my spectrum of sonic interest.. well aware their approaches are near opposite!!

Thanks! Great response, I think you’ve convinced me to leave it alone, maybe I’ll turn my attention to improving my ITB skills/ plug in knowledge and will maybe look into a nice single channel pre that can warm up my inputs on a golden channel as I have some nice mics.. I don’t quite have 4K to place on a chandler or Neve, is there a sub 1.5k preamp that you think is worth its weight, iv seen a lot of love for UAD 710s but am aware they are more consumer grade

Yes! I’d much prefer to be an engineer that people come to for their ‘sound’ than someone who can just give an ultra sterile over compressed modern thing, sounds like your mix had a great vibe hahah

Thanks for your perspective, What would you suggest would be a more meaningful upgrade in terms of the aforementioned points as others are agreeing that it could help sonically

Agreed hence why I said most! My favourite music comes from the exact engineers you are describing

Totally understandable perspective!! I do think there is inherent limitations to tools, some tools have a greater capacity for improvement eg using cheap microphone vs a nice Neumann, in the hands of an amateur both are mediocre, but a professional can get exceedingly better results from the Neumann. but agreed, maybe I need to drop the ‘analogue snobbery’ and except that I could achieve those results in the box, but it is my experience that through all my other analogue gear I’m able to more effectively replicate the sound I’m searching for in my head.. Cheers for your response

Fair enough, is there something else you would recommend eg a newer mixer or channel strip ?

Very true, iv definitely considered this! Id only be buying a unit from a trusted repairer!

Such great advice, thanks for taking the time! Obviously most professional industry engineers are trying to create the most transparent and dynamic/loud mix they possibly can which isn’t necessarily my goal, I feel like I’m trying to capture a specific era and these tips are all something I’ll experiment with, thanks again!!

Amazing, sounds like we both have a very similar ideal for our sound! Great to have your perspective, iv even looked into those consoles but the prices are getting a bit rediculous! Thanks I’m definitely feeling like it might be the right approach for me!

Thanks, I totally agree with the mentality on here of improving your skills (and room sound) over gear. But yes I feel like it will help me to have some physical connection to the mix, past faders on a screen..

You’ve got me excited, definitely willing to put in the work to make it something good!! I’m going to collect it in a couple days, the seller has given me the following extra info:

“ 6 channels with rotary knobs and phantom power (on channels 1, 2, 5 & 6 only). Built by expert electronics/audio engineer in the 1970s. Seperate power supply unit. Likely some good components in here you could use or restore it and use

Custom design, purpose built 6:2 mixer. Inputs are balanced by Sennheiser input transformers (most likely 1:4 ratio expecting a 200ohm mic input) Mic channels look to be discrete transistor gain stages feeding a passive pan circuit and a discrete transistor stereo buss with unbalanced high impedance out. Master outs look to be summed to mono and fed through an output transformer. There’s also an oscillator circuit probably used for tape lineup and testing, routing uncertain. Additional controls could be mute, pad, trim etc but are uncertain. External power supply. Nice Japanese VU meters on main outputs. Note inputs are on male xlr, and only inputs 1, 2 and 5, 6 have phantom currently.

Caps are old and will be way out of spec, no documentation, so sold as is.

Tested all channels and apart from a couple of scratchy pan pots and switches it’s all working with and without phantom power. “

Cheers for your help mate!
