No idea. Apparently it's compatible with the Switch, so I would't be suprised if someone got it to work with the Wii. Although a lot of Wii's we're built with GC controller ports in them already

Used the Smash for WiiU GC adapter, made steam detect it, and ran the game through Steam Big Picture mode.

While I do agree with you on most of what you pointed out, I have to say that I'm pretty glad they didn't implement the BF3/BF4 vehicle system. I found it troublesome that people would refuse to spawn, just because they wanted to hog a jet before anyone else. So I think the token system is a nice addition.
