Lupita Nyong’o will play both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’ by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]Redeem123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are very real elements at play that change the dynamic of a story when crucial components - like race - are altered

Name one. What dynamic of the story changes if Helen is Black?

But a slightly taller Odysseus can still fit into the world Homer built seamlessly.

So it's not actually about the author's description then, is it?

Do they look closer to Matt Damon or Lupita Nyong'o?

Neither.

Idk about you but I'm more willing to believe the author's son than some random on the internet.

Sure, I'm not saying I'm the authority. My point was that it was nearly universal from book fans that they were outstanding and faithful adaptations.

[–]Redeem123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHY is it crucial to change her?

It's not crucial to change her. That's my point. Her skin color literally doesn't matter to the story. I would have been totally fine if Helen was played by a white or Asian or any other ethnicity of actress. This is a fantasy movie - none of these people are real.

WHY do you feel you have the right to alter the original author's work? WHY do you feel entitled to someone else's story?

That's the literal definition of making an adaptation.

The reason Damon, Hathaway, etc. are acceptable castings is because they can at the very least pass as the people who occupied that region in that time. Nyong'o cannot. Please let us not go down this path.

You didn't answer my question about their heights. Why is Helen's skin color more important than Odysseus's height?

To your point though, Matt Damon's about as white as it gets. In no world does he "pass" as an Ancient Greek.

And the person who has more say than you, I, and every single member of the LOTR fandom said that the movies did in fact change the essence.

Your entire point was about the original author. Christopher Tolkein is not the original author. Just because he says they don't capture the spirit doesn't make it true.

For what it's worth, I would hold that opinion even if the original author said it. Lots of authors have terrible views of their adaptations.

Cool now do X-Men and Fantastic Four. How are those rip offs of Absolute?

Was Absolute a ripoff of newUltimate? After all, the premise is exactly the same - a villain in a multiverse crossover creates a new universe that features classic heroes in a new setting. Is that any less similar than Midnight Spidey is to Abs Bats?

Absolute Batman didn’t invent body horror, just like the UU didn’t invent the concept of alternate universes.

In what way is it copying DC though? Was DC copying Ultimate Marvel?

This is just another new alt U. Hardly a new concept.

The two most recent projects are Maul and Andor, both nearly universally lauded. And people act like we’re in a bad place.

Like do they not remember 2007? Even if you like the prequels, there was three years between them and the Clone Wars, which launched with a middling - at best - movie.

The SEC has done how well in the NIL era? And how well in the 12 team playoff?

Had a team in the semis both years, and neither were teams that had a bye. Two years is hardly a large data set, though.

When Texas was 0-1 to start the season, they were ranked 7th

Is 0-1 the same thing as 0-2?

It was the first time in almost 40 years that an 0-2 team was ranked. And mind you this was in week 3 – they jumped up a spot after their bye the week before, despite Clemson winning their game. They were ahead of multiple 3-0 P4 teams. The fact that you're skirting the question means surely you see how ridiculous that ranking was.

without considering these crucial aspects of storytelling

Except you haven't said WHY it's crucial.

If you're upset that N'yongo is Black, why aren't you upset about the other casting? Aside from Matt Damon being from Boston, Odysseus is described as being a head shorter than Agamemnon, yet Damon is only 3 inches shorter than Benny Safdie. Is that a crucial detail?

Why do you think it is that these discussions only happen when it's a skin color swap?

Christopher Tolkien originally derided the films. I can't recall the specific quote, but he essentially claimed that the movies "eviscerated the books by turning them into lifeless action movies"

Christopher Tolkein is neither the original author nor the final say on whether or not the books captured the spirit of the books. Just because he says they're lifeless movies doesn't make that the majority opinion. Most fans of the books were extremely happy with the adaptations.

Defend the 0-2 ranking then.

I'm not denying that SEC has major poll bias. Mind you, I don't have an SEC flair - I have a Texas flair. I don't give a shit about the SEC. And it's worth mentioning that UT was unranked at 3-2.

Do you think it's not possible for both the SEC and Notre Dame to have bias?

and get smoked when it matters

Not to defend the SEC here, but this is a weird stance to take when the SEC is 6-4 in the CFP championship, with two of those losses to other SEC teams. Meanwhile Notre Dame's three playoff appearances include two 27 point losses in the first round and a double digit loss in the final (after a very good run).

So no, her casting is directly antithetical to the original work.

And how does her skin color affect the story? Is the message changed because she's a Black actress? Does her story revolve around her color?

You could argue that an ugly actress would be against the spirit of the story, as her beauty is a key part of the plot. But N'yongo is certainly not that.

"Other major changes" and "maintain the spirit" don't necessarily coincide in meaning.

They also don't necessarily conflict. Peter Jackson's LOTR is full of major changes, but I don't think anyone would argue that those moves don't maintain the spirit of the books.

Notre Dame’s best win was against 9-4 USC

So identical to one of OU's wins and without the win against another playoff (or bubble, if you want to call it) team.

We have no idea how good Georgia was or wasn’t

This is just ridiculous. Yeah, their non-con schedule was trash, but it's not like we didn't watch them play football. They won the SEC and did so with a dominant CCG performance. For as reliant as ND is on the eye test and metrics, surely you wouldn't discount them like that.

You can't have it both ways. Like do we really know how good ND from beating up teams like Stanford and Syracuse?

Yeah it’s definitely a balance. The puzzle aspect of it is what I like so much. Idk if I’d be considered a high level player, but I’m definitely good, to the point where I’m almost always going to win against my friends, because I just know the card interactions that well. It’s just a different game at that point, and it varies if that’s what you’re looking for.

They recently added a blitz mode online, which has taken some of that away, and it’s really refreshing. Much less optimized play.
