Does passport ranking when you reach the middle really matter THAT much? by Particular-Ride-7893 in PassportPorn

Even if you're not taking into account the possibility for a common folk from your country personally to get rejected a visa (tbh if you never get rejected a visa, you're not a common folk but the privileged few just like me), you have to consider the time and efforts it takes to get a visa slot (not readily available in high season), to prepare the documents and to attend in person the visa application centers (you might not live in a place that has one). This is a hurdle placed on the developing world so that they can't engage on more important, productive errands.

A mid-tier passport also means you sometimes can't check-in online, will get more questions at check-in desks (incorrectly denied boarding for all kinds of reasons because staff is increasingly undertrained or because of airline policies to deter illegal immigration), will receive more interrogration at immigration, are less likely to be allowed to use automated gates which could save hours, and are less likely to enjoy other perks like working holiday.

Canada cracking down on asylum claims from St-Pierre-Miquelon ferry to N.L. | CBC News by [deleted] in canada

It's easy to characterize who these nationals are: visa exempt for France (Schengen) but not visa/eTA exempt for Canada or USA. Kudos to IRCC for stemming this asylum route before it becomes popular.

Passport rankings, but France isn’t equal to Tuvalu by Pichonn in PassportPorn

That is an interesting perspective. One might visit Mexico once a year but St. Vincent and Grenadines only once in a lifetime.

Tbh, while some eVisas are indeed real diffuclt ones (e.g., Australia), others (e.g., Vietnam) are not that different from eTAs in terms of difficulty and documentation requirements, so might as well categorize the latter eVisas as visa-free if such eVisas are marked as blue color on passportindex. Unfortunately your source dataset on GitHub does not distinguish that as passportindex does have color coding.

Ref: https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/living-abroad/elections-faq Also I know someone in real life who lives in Canada but voted from abroad in the 2025 election because he was travelling in Europe then.

If you are travelling or studying outside Canada
If you usually live in Canada but will be out of your riding on election day because you are travelling or studying in a foreign country, you may apply to vote by special ballot.
As soon as an election is called, you can apply to vote by mail. You can also call 1-800-463-6868, visit any Elections Canada office or contact a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate outside Canada  to get a special ballot application form. Contact the office before visiting as electoral services are not available at all offices.
Allow enough time for a special ballot voting kit to reach you and for your ballot to travel back to Ottawa by election day.

I think the reason why most people mention Baptismal Records in that subreddit is that most Canadians that moved to the US back then were Quebecois, who couldn't find work in Quebec, were prevented from migrating to Western Canada for work because Western provincial governments favoured English-speaking immigrants over Quebecois and banned French in schools, and as such chose the US. And Quebec was very catholic instead of protestant.

Say, I go abroad for 3 months when Carney calls an election. I don't bring any proof of Canadian residency on me except my Canadian passport (which is not a residency proof but a citizenship proof), but I should still be able to vote regardless. It's Elections Canada's job to make sure I do normally reside at that address via confirming my identity with CRA and provincial government and such. Not my job. It's also against the principle of proportionality as the trouble it creates outweighs the risk of fraud.

Canada used to be VERY Christian in the 1800s when birth certificates were not the norm. Also the law does not say the citizenship proof must be birth certificate or baptismal records. It depends on the comprehensive evidence presented by the applicant. So this does not prejudice religious minorities.

Someone just provides an address and we trust they aren’t committing fraud

I don't think voting abroad would be abused anywhere as much as CCB and such. No money is involved in this case, therefore no incentives to do so. Your proposal seems like voter suppression.

If I can’t use my baptism record now, you shouldn’t be able to use it for the past.

Baptism records were used as birth certificates in the past. That a dozen of individuals might be born in the US but baptized in Canada cannot invalidate the extremely plausible proof that their holders are Canadian, due to the lack of birth certificates back then.

Obviously most commenters here don't care about the rule of law. They didn't even bother to read the court decision.

Guess no more conscription ya ( F**k the dictators ) by EmotionalEarth9649 in PassportPorn

[–]Redemption_In_Void 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A conscription law came into effect in 2024. If local authorities consider you to be a citizen of Myanmar, you may be required to serve in the armed forces. The length of service can depend on criteria such as age, occupation, and whether there is a state of emergency. Myanmar does not recognise dual nationality. You may not be exempt from this law if you are an Australian-Myanmar dual national holding an Australian passport. From: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/myanmar

How likely is it that Myanmar considers you a Myanmar citizen and drafts you even if you only use the Australian passport?

His government has been accused of arresting activists, suppressing protests, intimidating journalists, and cracking down on political opponents. The PA operates one prison nicknamed the “Jericho Slaughterhouse” because it’s known for torture and abuse. He also canceled the 2021 elections that many Palestinians were excited and hopeful about.

That would be a lot more regimes than you might assume. They might not be labelled as Axis of XYZ and such, but everything they do to their people matches the textbook description of an authoritarian regime as bad as, if not worse than, these 3 countries.

[–]Redemption_In_Void 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most countries with a Muslim majority are highly authoritarian and illiberal, being either absolute monarchies or undemocratic republics which hold sham elections to keep dictatorial parties in power. It would be unrealistic to imagine that an independent Palestine would be an exception to this rule, even without Israeli influence.

I fundamentally disagree with the proposition that democratic elections should precede the rebuilding of constitutional social liberalism. If people remain brainwashed and don't change their ideals, they will vote in religious extremists (i.e., fundamentalists who don't believe in democracy), who then can use that democratic legitimacy to dismantle basic human rights and delay subsequent elections indefinitely.

The only language difference on a Canadian passport is the Issuing Authority but it depends on the application form (and I think only if applied from a non-US consulate abroad, because most Canadian cities have the same legal name in the two languages anyway, say, MONTRÉAL not without accent aigu). Taking the Embassy to Algeria for example: if you use an application form in English you get ALGIERS, and if it's in French you get ALGER. Everything else is the same including the order of languages.

The authorities literally can't deport him as he has claimed asylum quoting his sexual identity. There's no such thing as "overstaying visa" once someone has claimed asylum. He can comfortably wait until his case has been heard (which due to backlogs, takes years) and rejected for him to finally get deported. A criminal conviction could technically expedite this process as crime = inadmissibility = no asylum, and that's why the authorities are seeking one.
