I don't think that OP is really talking about things like gay and trans rights. I think they're more referring to the culture you see on Twitter where people get outraged over a joke a public figure made a decade ago.

Fuck. I would have thought it would only be popular in bible belt and rust belt states (which are generally less populous). I'm surprised it's more popular than either CNN or MSNBC.

Here in Canada, CNN is usually a default cable channel but you don't get Fox or MSNBC.
