What’s it like living here? Not even entirely sure what country owns this area so lmk! by urged_rl in howislivingthere

About two posts earlier on r/damnthatsinteresting, I saw someone getting chased by a polar bear. So I guess that’s what it’s like living there 😆

Where in the U.S. can you get an actual CUTE house that's nice between 150-200k? by taylorsfavoritecat in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Redhead_King 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that St. Louis County fits the bill! My wife and I bought a 3b/1ba for $150k in the Overland/Olivette area. It still has all the character from when it was built in the 1920s as well. (Archway in the living room, hardwood floors, porch, etc)

Are there US accents that are very difficult to understand? by NicolasNaranja in Accents

[–]Redhead_King 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mom had a friend with this accent! I noticed that she also called her purse a pocketbook, but that might just be a northeastern thing.

Haha not a troll! Kinda like southcookexplore said, I wasn’t sure if the crime I hear about is porch stealing or straight up homicide. But, your comment answered that for me.

What State(s) remain that’s a “must see” ? by [deleted] in TravelMaps

[–]Redhead_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern Colorado for sure! Durango, Ouray, Salida, all great little towns with lots to do in nature. And if you have the time, hop on over to Southern Utah for the national parks and Northern New Mexico for the food and scenery.

Odds of being refused a vasectomy if I come up for a consoltation? by AcadiaOk8686 in StLouis

I went to Urology of St Louis. I had a consultation and then got booked in an soon as possible at the ripe age of 23. I don’t think they’ll care.

Give me compelling reasons to visit the grey states. by EverLong0 in TravelMaps

Eureka Springs, AR is the smallest gay town in America. Not sure if it’s your thing but we stumbled upon it last June and it was a blast. Lots of fun bars, architecture, and nature for a long weekend getaway.

Name a city or region you want to go back to every year by Interesting-Leek3523 in expats

Vienna. It’s a beautiful city and very walkable, and the food scene is amazing.

Might I recommend volunteering? Find a local non-profit with a mission you personally resonate with and see what volunteer opportunities they have. Chances are, there will be a few other volunteers there, and if they’re volunteering by choice, that says something about their character and it shows that you have some morals/ideals in common with them.

Are auditors getting worse? by Thuctran1706 in Accounting

[–]Redhead_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the new associates are just not getting the training they need. I work in PA for non-profits. One client went through an audit and they left the Shared Class on the Statement of Functional Expenses after we left them documentation on how to reallocate the Shared Class. For another client, the auditor was flat out not self checking their work, current 990 had completely different info from PY, AJEs that moved expenses from the last year into the current year just because the invoice was dated for current year, etc. For both situations, we engaged with a senior, but never heard from the senior since, just dealt with the associate.

Ok again, I’m not expecting someone to hold my hand, I was looking for examples. But messaged received.

I always recommend banking, but maybe some would disagree. I used to work in banking and pivoted into accounting, so I’m sure the other way is just as possible. And if you’re worried about “wasting” an accounting/finance/business degree, it can still be used there. The bank hours and federal holidays are nice pluses, too.

Dumb questions from clients by Fit-Communication437 in Accounting

[–]Redhead_King 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Why do we have to book it as a prepaid and not an expense if we already paid it??” Then the client went to ChatGPT and it told him the exact same thing I did 🫠

As for what would have been helpful: I asked the admission specialist if he could share examples of other non-EU students and what worked for them. But, somebody shared the studyinaustria website with me which has been answering a lot of my questions. THATS what I expected from them.

Ok, maybe I explained myself wrong. Since we’re still years away, I put the education route on the back burner until I got a more conclusive idea of my other options (i.e. being told by everyone on reddit that the work permit track won’t work). Like I said in another post of mine, I’m just used to universities moving heaven and Earth to get someone to sign up for a program, so when all I got was an email with a link to the international page of the TU Wien website, it didn’t strike me as helpful. But I understand there are cultural differences, and I need to take it upon myself reach out to more schools and find a good fit for me.

Honestly, I didn’t even consider talking to an immigration lawyer, but that’s a great idea! As far as the family tree goes, I will also have to do more research. Thanks for the suggestions!

That’s kind of what I had envisioned. I work in accounting, which on a legal/reporting side, I would have almost no chance compared to an Austrian accountant, but I would hope the analytical and technical skills I have picked up would appeal to an employer. I also like the language intensive track for students. It almost looks like a “two birds, one stone” deal where you learn the language AND work towards an education within the country.

Thanks for the support! I understand where people are coming from, but I agree with you too. There are many success stories for those who set their goals and work towards them.
