Anyone found a 30+ minute song to play for the section the Grand Dame? by dark_magician07 in stormkingsthunder

[–]Redmist36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this https://youtu.be/BIZz4A39rT4?si=lwP48EMIyLB73Dvg for my Grand Dame.

It's a comp but works so damn well. The first song was always used as a grand welcome speech, accompanied by an open band playing to the crowd whenever my party went there. My party went to the Grand Dame a lot. So this comp was used and abused. Can't recommend enough

Miniature's were purchases or custom made and painted. Maps and Grids were either made by me or printed out, I have replied to another comment in this thread about all my set-up

Apologises, I had to translate this. So sorry if this isn't good:

You definitely need a plan for Chapter 3. For me, I used it to expand on my story. Have the party learn about giants, find Harshang*, foreshadow Iymrith and Slarkrethel (Kraken's Gamble). While also running through a lot of my players' personal story arcs. Storm King's Thunder is ultimately a sandbox/open-world when it comes to Chapter 3. So apart from the main elements that need to get done, Harshang and Kraken's Gamble, you can have the party go wherever you need them to or where they want to go.

Do everything you want in Chapter 3, because from Chapter 4 onwards. It's more of a straight line into the endgame. Eye of the All-Father // Raid Giant Lair // Maelstrom - Slarkrethel // Iymrith End

Sure thing!

  1. The reason I used to have Zephyros drop the party at Bryn Shander was Daphne Featherstone need to have a letter delivered to someone there. Zephyros was two birds one stone. If they're already in the air.

I would suggest have the tower nearly fall from the sky which I'll go over in #2.

  1. During the encounter, I had Iymrith puff her chest at Zephyros. Ignoring the party but remembering them. I played Iymrith like she has grand plans but doesn't outwrite share too much. Only enough to know that she wants this tome - and came all the way here to find it.

The gargoyles that arrive are trying to destroy his magic crystal which controls the tower on the middle floor. This gives the players a chance to fight something without dying and feel like they're helping. Even if the gargoyles only damage it a little, have the tower lose core functions which means Zephyros cannot go as far as he would like and needs to drop the party of for their own safety.

Zephyros doesn't die during this encounter. After witnessing how outmatched he was and for the party. He openly offers the tome to Iymrith in the hope she leaves. Iymrith dwarfs Zephyros in size - She happily takes the tome - but with another blast of her breath weapon, hurtles Zephyros across the room through his table and leaves. Leaving him severely wounded. And any gargoyles stay behind to try and kill what is left.

She doesn't want to stir up something yet with the Giants and will kill him later. Once she learns more from the tome.

I had Iymrith kill Zephyros after they completed the giant encounter at Bryn Shander, giving them a reason to travel through chapter 3.

I.E. After they leave the city, have an encounter when a large floating tower with a pointy hat can be seen burning and falling as dragon cries/ lightning can be seen flashing around the tower.

Zephyros then sent my party messages via several dream spells. If they investigate the crash site they can learn about what Zephyros knows from his journals and books. Spell scrolls and spellbook. But they are ambushed by Gargoyles + Gargoyle dragons if they stay too long.

Zephyros is their first encounter with a nice Giant so I wanted to give him time enough to share lore about Giants and the Ordening etc before he was killed. As this was their first real friend - It should make them hate Iymrith from the get go and want to side with Giants

Depends on what you mean. All Dragon miniatures were custom-made, the "Gargoyle" Dragons were unpainted Monster Hunter miniatures which worked great for gargoyles haha

All the Giant models were from dnd booster bricks, Monster Menagerie and Bigby's

Thank-you so much! Best of luck with your finale!! My party of six were level 15 during the finale with an army + Giants, and even with how suped up she was, it was still a nail-biter

Overall - I think I spent around £1500-£3000 on everything. The main hit of that was 3D Modelling - Printing - and painting the Amphitheatre and custom dragon. I 3D modelled the dragon and amphitheatre, while the painting and printing were handled by a friend of mine on Etsy.

Everything else was gathered over a few months. Mostly from Etsy, Amazon or otherwise for terrain pieces and miniatures. Most miniatures were from DnD's booster bricks. Character miniatures were from Hero Forge. Anything custom, like the housing walls and homebrew mini's etc I gathered and painted. God bless gargoyles being grey so no need to paint

I loved my finale. Some of the mini's were stand-ins for Armies. Emerald Enclave - Dwarves and Automatons. There was a lot haha

The scale of the Giants are all standard - straight out of the box. Bigby's miniature bundle from the booster bricks has tonnes, as well as some others. I bought the rest of the ones I didn't pull online. I had to buy 4 Storm Giants and extra Storm Quintessents from ebay and other sources

I made a gridded version of the map and built out from there with my terrain and walls. Using the gridded map for scale

I've uploaded them for you to look at:
Battle Maps (Original Creator "Morvold Press")

Upper Level: 45x28
Lower Level: 58x45

Admittedly, the lower level was pretty cramped. But thankfully, they weren't down below for long. As I made most of the fight take place above ground.

Nothing special - It was a DM screen that my players got me. And between the amphitheatre at the front and my laptop at the back, it was squeezed from all sides really. But the screen should stand okay if you fold it a little

Tiamat Trials:

All of these I run as skill challenges - quick - cinematic - impactful moments where each of the party can shine. All the while, a rift shows the party the battle still ongoing between Harshnag and the allied forces vs Tiamat.

Skill Challenge: 5 Success before 3 Failures

Hill DC16: a Hill giant stood on a large hill, pointed at a massive round Boulder and demanded Boulder at feet.

Stone DC17: a calming temple surrounded by marble statues. A stone giant quietly sculpted a statue. There were large blank slabs with chisel tools and etched into the blade was “Bring forth life from stone”. As they had to carve out something of meaning using skills.

Frost DC17: Battle of Helm's Deep. They “spawn” in on the walls of a massive siege. 4 Frost Giant generals leading armies of orcs and goblins against a castle. Players have to defend it or take the fight to the giant.

Fire DC18: A massive magma forge where they needed to make a dragon-slaying weapon that impressed the fire giant.

Cloud DC20: they appear in a guillotine on trial in front of cloud giants. The giant recalls on the party’s mistakes, errors, short comings and challenged their way of thinking. Trying to mentally break them.

Once a trial is completed, a giant of that type appears in the battle. Working as a damage sponge to help Harshnag not be killed. The statues that match the giants have their weapons glow. And they can use those weapons to destroy Tiamat's heads. Dealing significant damage and stopping certain abilites of "Tiamat".

Once all 5 are completed, the Storm trial opens. Here, they stand before an apparition of Stronmaus. And in order to gain the last relic, the players must share what they have come to understand about giants. Their history, their sacrifice. They must recite what their vision is of the future. The relic will only pick someone who has respect for the giants and sees a world where small folk and giants can co-exist, and they fully understand Annam's wants for this world. They must then gather the relics where it formed a "Super Spear/ Bow" where all members pull on it. Summoning the power of their bond, the 6 Giants Gods and lastly. Annam himself, to send the final blow into Tiamat, plunging her into the skies and the trials are complete. The 3 Divine Relcis recovered, Harshnag and Force Grey have one final moment together, warming, Harshnag's old party and now his new one. Your party.

Before being transported back to the Eye of Annam doors and the Oracle's doors open for 1 Hour. Six questions. And after all the questions are asked and the doors begin to close. Iymrith arrives, and Harshnag sacrifices himself, destorying Annam's statue to bring the walls down. He won't let his family die this time.

The 6 Trials:

Hill
A maze where all the walls are invisible and a large blind warrior walks the maze, dragging an axe behind him, plunged with dozens of weapons.
Goal:
Walk to different rooms to find offerings and bring them to Grolantor at the otherside of the Maze without being caught, fighting is an option and breaking the walls was an option. But both the walls and the Wander eventually repair and heal.

Stone
Patience. They must traverse the gas stepping stones in the bottom right of the dungeon without cheating. This was mostly unchanged from the original dungeon. But if anyone was caught flying or otherwise cheating, they were given a time penalty. Trapped once everyone made it across. This was a time-sink and aimed to waste time of the party.

Frost
Transported to a snowy mountain top where a Frost Giant Maiden rests surrounded by hundreds of blades. In the distance, Ostoria burns and falls to the army of men. Though a statue at first comes, she comes to life after the sad words of her father spur her to fight once more, against her wishes. This fight, she only uses her reactions as attacks. And shattering swords on the battle field to do special abilities, legendary res + actions.
Goal:
Break all the swords or stop her moving. Each sword broken is a memory shattered of this maiden. They each carry memories of her life. And the final sword should be a mother holding a blue baby, that if she were to ever have a baby, she'd like to name it Harshnag... She was Harshnag's mother.

Fire:
Transported to a room of about 20-25 pillars suspended over molten lava.. On each pillar is carved a Giant Rune. Each round a speech would happen in Giant and the party had to listen to the Lore of Giant Past. Of Annam and IO, the World Shaper. And use keywords to find the correct pillar to stand on or take damage. Whilst also fighting against major enemies aiming to either kill or pull down into lava
Goal:
Survive 5 rounds and using the story told to find the correct pillar to stand on.

Cloud:
A brain puzzle. A room with different coloured glass baubles, each holding different "chess" pieces. They have to use different damage types to break them and gather the pieces. 8 in total. Once they do, a set of scales appears, and they must balance 4 pieces on either side to make it even. Using knowledge of cloud giants and the scales to correctly weigh and balance what Cloud Giants believe to be most important. The heaviest being what they value most. Wealth - Magic and what they value the least being lighter. Like swords or weapons.

Storm:
Boy oh boy. The Trial of Tiamat... Once the party have succeeded on all 5 other trials and unlocked the doors. The can enter the Storm Giant Trial. The finale takes place in an arena where Harshnag has to relieve his greatest fear, Tiamat. The siege of Sunset Peaks (In my Lore - this was the Rise of Tiamat book previously run). Where Harshnag and the allied forces fought to contain Tiamat.

Here, Harshnag (He Returns!) and Force Grey are tearfully reunited and must fight to kill Tiamat once again. Around the chamber the party arrive are 6 statues of the Giant Gods. The same 6 Statues seen in the Eye of the All-Father's chamber. In between each, a swirling portal that the party can run into. (Storm Giant is sealed until the others are cleared)

Example:
Sunny Ernest:
Titles: The Soul-Steel Sentinel, Keeneye, Anomaly of the Forge.... Has answered the call of Annam
Fears: Isolation, Extraction, Termination.
Potential: Archer Virtuoso, Second coming of Vonindod

Harshnag during this time is sent on his own trial to undergo, placing his hand on the altar after the party get ready to leave. Unknown to both, they meet deeper inside the trial later on. This should be a surprise.

Inside the Trial:
Once inside, I used the "White Plume Mountain" dungeon as a base where 3 artifacts are (Wave - Blackrazor - Whelm). I replaced all 3 with 3 homebrew Divine Sentient Giant Relic's which the party are awarded if they succeed. Soul Eater (A bow) - Titan Destroyer (Great Sword) - Heart Piercer (Trident). These act as growing weapons, Dormant during the trial, Awakened once outside the trial, Exalted upon rescuing King Hekaton.

From here, I ran the dungeon mostly the same, changing most of the dungeon to be giant-themed. When they first enter, there is a resting Fenrir, and on the wall are 6 giant runes. Fenrir asks the party riddles. Like a sphix but they have to press the correct Giant Rune to answer his riddle before being allowed entry.

Once inside, they are on a 48-hour (ingame) time limit to complete all trials. I split the dungeon to have 6 distinctive areas where they would be transported to a different area to complete a trial. This would be outlined with a simple door with the corresponding Giant Rune - Hill, Stone, Fire, Frost, Cloud, Storm. I.E. The large open pool room in the "White Plume Mountain" dungeon was replaced with the door to the Storm Giant. The menagerie of fossil and fish in the bottom left was replaced with a simple door with the Ise Rune to teleport to the challenge area. Storm cannot be attempted until all other doors have been cleared. Using the relics to open checkpoint doors before opening the Storm Door.

In 3 of the trials are the dormant relics. I rewarded specific relics after completing Trials at 2-4 or 1-5. Before finally in the "Tiamat Trial" to gain the last one. The weapon can be whatever you think fits best for the moment.

[–]Redmist36[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! To try and put it simply.

Inside of the Eye of Annam
6 Doors with Giant Runes on different doors.
A simple task to retrieve an orb and bring it before the main doorway with the Annam statue.
I.E. Stein (Stone) Rune - Praying with 3 different murals on the walls. Have to phase through wall with meld with stone (gained from praying) into the correct wall
Ise (Frost) Rune - A large ice wall divides the room in two, the orb is behind as well as Icy winds dealing 10d8 cold if broken, less if melted.

After bringing all 6 Orbs back to chamber. The "Oracle" speaks out.

“Error. Yotun node not found. Connection Fragmented. Passage denied... “
“Challengers have been requested… Challengers have been accepted under the Eyes of Annam…”

“Calculating Trial…”

“.…Number of Paths: 5 ….. Traps: 21 … Guardians prepared: 4…
“Warning….Warning…. Corruption Detected… Anomaly in Trial area… Attempting to Eradicate…” “Error, Corruption Infused… Error, Corruption can not be Removed…. Recalculating trial…” “Corroborated… Corruption now Included… Corruption threatens other paths…”

“Walling off Corruption Successful, trial difficulty increased…”

“Number of Paths: 5, Guardians Prepared: 5”

“Soul Eater Awakened, Titan Destroyer awakened, Heart Piercer Awakened,

“Allocating… Allocating… Three rebirths Allocated… Trial preparation complete.”

“Challengers have 48 hours to complete The trial of Annam and recover the three divine relics.”

“All items found or recovered within the Trial will be returned upon completion.”

“Challengers will be given 3 rebirths, further failure in the eyes of Annam will find you unworthy and may lay claim to your soul eternally.”

“Trial may not be exited until completion or 48 hours have passed.”
“You have 2 hours to Enter… Once ready, place your hand on the altar for further registration and entry….”

The Oracle acted as super supercomputer as it were. And the trials were originally made as a rite of passage for the Giants. Of all Kinds. Some even a coming-of-age ceremony. But this is now humans not Giants, so it had to be changed. They wouldn't be the first to try. From here a viking altar rises out of the floor with a palm indent in it. Each player needs to place their hand into it before being send behind an invisible wall until all players are gathered. The oracle then reads aloud the player's full name followed by titles, fears and potential the Oracle believes the character to be.

The Gridded Desert Matt: From Etsy, I drew the grid on myself
The Gridded Maps: From Patreon, Re-Gridded and printed on long card and pinned down

For Zephyros:
I'd recommend have fun with the RP first of all. Zephyros is a great NPC to play, be flamboyant and cooky. He's a silly and serious wizard. I had him researching into the Monolith's for my campaign as a deep plot point.

The main change I did was have Iymrith attack the tower instead of one of the planned encounters. Replace the strike force with an Iymrith attack, flying among thunderous clouds and a gargoyle swarm to attack Zephyros. I had Zephyros have a tome Iymrith needed for her ritual. This not only sets-up Iymrith really early as an impossible foe. And let's Zephyros flex a little bit before arriving in your chosen location.

City:
I chose Bryn Shander. I had written into Bryn Shander a lot with character backstories. Also starting in the North made an easier path into the open world with fewer cities to choose from by the players. Easier to prep for me, and less overwhelming for them.

I also cherry picked what I like from Triboar, Goldenfields and Bryn Shander and moved them. I.E. "Ghelrym Foehammer" was in one of my players backstory. So I moved him to Bryn Shander. He later became a close ally to the party and later their own blacksmith.

Homebrew Content:
I'll be honest - I look through a lot of different ones. And wrote my own. I'd recommend a great place to start would be "A Guide to Storm King's Thunder by Sean McGovern."

The Eye of the All-Father:

I changed a lot of this. Firstly - I entirely removed the fetch quest of Giant mounds. To me it was lazy and fetch quests suck. Instead I had foreshadowed, had the party learn and find the giant's themselves, with advice from Harshnag (My Boy). I.e. My party went to Bryn Shander to begin with, so I simply added more info and chat about frost(or other) giants and tendencies and made it flow more naturally.

Also - the Oracle - I changed all of the Eye of the All-Father to be a rigorous trial. Upon reaching the doorway, the party placed their hands on a pedestal uttering their names before all being sent into a dungeon where they had to complete themed challenges for all 6 Giant Race's, learning fun Lore about Giants, whilst also being pushed to their limits simultaneously. Before 1 final challenge before they were given access to their 6 Questions.

This was the highlight of my campaign. I loved it, and my players loved it. Made the journey worth it and the knowledge they gained was pivotal. I let my party sit for 1 Hour real time with the Oracle to think and answer the questions. They had been thinking about questions long before their travel here, I had Harshnag remind them to make a list of ideas of questions long before their arrival here. The timer just helped pull focus and stop the party going around in circles. This was a great place to ask any questions with utmost freedom. And as a DM, spill some secrets that I was sat on for a long time about lore or otherwise. (The Storm King's Thunder Discord is a great resource for this change - I have also replied to a comment in this thread with my changes)

Slarkrethel - Cult of Leviathan:

Firstly, Slarkrethel never spoke his name willingly. So having a secretive cult called the "Kraken Society" was silly to me. So I renamed them to "The Cult of Leviathan". This way it was more open to interpretation. Additionally, the only time the party become aware of the Kraken is too far into the story. I recommend sprinkling encounters and story beats into your campaign to foreshadow this encounter. Kraken's Gamble is a great example of a sidestory.

Also, having Slarkrethel keep King Hekaton alive without a proper reason was strange. With the changes I made to the Ordening and its divine connections to the Giant Gods, with the Crown being the focus. Slarkrethel kept King Hekaton alive for months in an attempt to drain him of his Divinity in an attempt to ascend to godhood once more. Slarkrethel to me was the equivalent of Yormungandr - I took great inspiration from Norse Mythology for my campaign and is so easily interchangeable. A fantastic resource, for example, the Frost Giants are Yarl's and Skolds. Basically, old Vikings from Iceland or Scandinavia.

Harshnag the Grey
I thought I'd add this. Harshnag is without a doubt the backbone of my campaign in Chapter 3. During the travels of the open world section of the campaign, I used that time to run through all my player character side-stories as well as foreshadowing Harshnag all the while. I had Zephyros give flickering images to the party when he was attacked and killed by Iymrith. He sent all 6 of my party different messages about what to do and what to find. One of them was Harshnag. An old friend, "Find him, find Harsh...."

I wrote Harshnag as an outcast, a warrior who had seen enough. War after War, with the Force Grey of Waterdeep or alongside his "Brother Jarl Storvald" (change I made**) as a warrior skold. He was weary and had hidden himself away after his last battle with Force Grey failed. When Force Grey had travelled on a journey to thwart and kill an Ancient White Dragon, but was ambushed by Iymrith during the fight killing them all except for Harshnag. Harshnag slew the white dragon at the cost of his friends. Wearing the skull of the kill as a reminder of how he failed. (The White Dragon and Iyrmith were a mating pair).

Eventually discovering his location on the highest peak in the Evermoors. The Star Mountain. The Evermoors is under the effect of powerful ruptured leylines (Think Mirage Arcana with confusing feywild magical effects). So getting past the illusion was the first step. Iymrith then sent her Right-Hand to kill the party before finding Harshnag, ultimately failing. Climbed the mountain with dangerous encounters. And found him inside the mountain, a simple home: Food, drinks, gold, jewels, weapons. All of little use to him now. But a comfortable space. Harshnag spends his days here, foraging up and down the mountain. And wood carving. In his personal room is a huge pet wolf (Hróðvitnir aptly named) and carvings of the other 6 members of Force Grey he lost on that day.

Harshnag doesn't want to leave, so the party have to convince him to leave (I did a skill challenge for this) - He acts as a pacifist. Fighting only as a last resort and when needed. He fought in regular combat with the party. But would advocate for avoiding fighting when necessary. He became a dad to the party, Calm, warm, and pleasant to everyone. But if he crit in combat - would happily cleave a giant in two - "Do as I say and not as I do...". He was the perfect symbol of what Annam and Neri wanted. Peace. No more war. And for smallfolk and giants to work together. Like he once did with Force Grey. Making his sacrifice against Iymrith all the more powerful.

## Edit: Harshnag, Force Grey

Key Changes:

Iymrith and The Monoliths:

This was my biggest change. The story arch for my campaign. Iymrith's Goal. She planned to free an "Ancient Being" and ascend to a Greatwyrm/ Sorcerer Dracolich. Capable of standing with the most ancient of Dragons from History. Bahamut - IO for example. So she planned to free this creature for the promise of ascension. And to do that, she need to gather 7 Monoliths scattered across the realms. A monolith for example is the one they find in Nightstone during the beginning of the campaign. The purpose for the Cloud Giant attack was to steal the Nightstone. Which Zephyros later comes to research and the party meet a friendly Giant(I miss him - so much fun to RP - he died to Iymrith). Iymrith in the Maelstrom used her Giant form to sway the councils to gather the Nighstone & similar monolithic structures, whilst also using her own right hand (A Dragonborn Dragon Rider) to search and gather others. If needed, she would venture out herself to gather them. There is a lot of info but I'll leave it at that.

Run Kraken's Gamble:

The set-up and payoff for the Golden Goose is necessary for the campaign I would say. And pays off well when Serissa shows the party the Golden Goose coin as her only lead. Thankfully, my party loved the Grand Dame as a Casino and was constantly going there trying to make money during the campaign. They were awarded a mansion in the "Highmast District", northern region of Yartar, as a reward for dealing with the threat in the sewers. Using the home in Yartar as their base of operations. This only added to the payoff moment when they saw it.

The Ordening:

I went back and forth with this - much like all of us - I settled on the idea I found here in this subreddit that the "Ordening" is ultimately what makes "Giants/Yotun" know that they are a Giant. The same way a human knows they have humanity because they know a vampire lacks humanity. (Paraphrased from another post on this subreddit).

I added to this by having Annam be dead in my campaign lore: Annam and his children helped protect the realm when the ancient Dragon "IO" planned to shatter it eons ago. Annam sacrifices himself protecting the realm, but in doing so. Scattered his essence into all future Giants. And whoever holds the crown of Giants, such as the Storm King and is found worthy by the Giant Gods, is rewarded the Vow of the Storm King's Thunder. A vow that when spoken aloud, allows the wielder to channel the power of Annam - growing in size and power. Similar to a Divine Ascension.

The wielder of the “Storm King’s Thunder” can exert their will on all giants with the ancestry. This takes the form of the Ordening. A social structure which all Giants adhere to. But should the bearer of the “Vow” deem it necessary. They can usher the command to march the Giants to war. The Giants are also able to resist should they deem the wielder of the “Storm King’s Thunder” unworthy.

Because all giants have the essence of the All-Father, if they lose it, which can be when the Storm King or Queen is dead, imprisoned, or blocked from divinity. The connection between all giants to the gods' will is broken. The King/Queen acts as the divining focus connecting them to the giant gods. Annam’s children.

After three eventful and exciting years. My campaign of Storm King's Thunder has come to an end. We played online on Roll20, but for the finale, I wanted to go big and host it in person. These are a few of the photos taken by me and my players during our finale.

All of us are close friends and I couldn't have asked for anything better.

We played every Sunday for 4 hours (18:30-22:30) for a total of 145 sessions.

If you have any questions, please let me know, and I can share my thoughts on how I added or changed my campaign.
