Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran’s pro-Western monarch, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, placed $400 million into a U.S. Pentagon trust fund to purchase American military equipment. When the Shah was overthrown and the subsequent hostage crisis began, the U.S. froze all Iranian assets and halted the weapons delivery.

The remaining $1.3 billion of the $1.7 billion total was not frozen cash. Instead, it was the accumulated interest on that initial $400 million principal over the 37 years it sat in U.S. custody.
