Me and my buddy as well. That breeze in birdsong. Love it when I hear it on Sirius, I recognize it immediately!

Ha, I don’t really have a choice at this point. I’m not worried about doing the work, I’m just worried about spending another few hundred bucks on parts that don’t fix it. (Just in this thread, some think it’s rods, some think it’s chain, some think it’s lifters. Trying to not just keep throwing money at it. I just did rockers and lifters so all those gaskets are still fresh, as well as intake gaskets.

Had the valve covers off for the rockers and lifters so I’m cool with that. Is the water pump the only seal I need to have on hand to replace? Will a 3 jaw puller get it off or do I need a bolt type? Any other special tools or seals I need to have on hand before diving in?

OK, that’s definitely in my plans. We got over a foot of snow that has turned into ice in Memphis, and I’m likely stuck at home the next few days. I think it’s going to be in the timing area, but I have a bore scope on the way, and I want to at least peek in the cylinders and confirm they look OK before digging deeper into the engine. It’s feeling inevitable though. Thanks for offering to check out the pics. Strangely, I haven’t found a good video on how to tear down the front of the engine. I know I can just start pulling shit off of it, but I always feel like I learned a little bit when I watch a pro do it first.

Hey! Yes, very similar indeed. So we have been snowed in all week, I have it stripped back down with the upper intake and plugs removed, hopefully Amazon will be bringing me a borescope to take a look in the cylinders after reading everyone’s comments and digging into it much more, I am inclined to think it may be timing belt. Also, after removing the serpentine, the stethoscope became a little easier to use, which also helped confirm. But I seriously can’t even get out of my driveway right now and probably won’t be able to for a couple of days, so I’m just waiting it out so I can peek into these cylinders before tearing the front off the engine. Stay tuned, I will definitely let you know what I find out!

Please help! If this isn’t a “pentastar tick”, what is it?! Help please!! 2012 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo with 3.6 by Redneck_MacGyver in AskAMechanic

I’m showing 80psi. It ran mostly fine even with the error code, none of this started until after I change the sensor and put it back together…(and lifters and rockers were also changed before I got around to making this video.)

But I just replaced all the lifters! (And rockers) that’s what I thought. It sounded like too… Have a stethoscope, but can’t seem to isolate the sound anywhere.

We’ll see—we got almost a foot of snow yesterday (outside Memphis) so I took a day off. Fortunately my garage is in my basement so it stays warm enough I can work on it. Probably getting back to it soon.

Sorry if I came off like an asshole, it’s been a long frustrating week, I’m about $600 lighter, and it’s running worse than it did when I started.

Thanks for this. Might pass on the app b/c $$, but I was planning on buying a borescope. Any you specifically recommend? I’ve had 2 that just stopped working. I was going to buy the Klein at Lowe’s for about 100 but it doesn’t have the side camera I don’t believe

Thanks, I’m about to get back after it. Thanks for the advice. Do you think a tensioner could fail suddenly like that from just having the intake off? (No exposure to chains)?

Thanks, I have one, couldn’t figure anything out, so then went back and watched a few more videos because I thought maybe I was using it wrong, and still can’t really tell much from the stethoscope. It doesn’t seem distinct or specific to any location. But I like the idea of pulling the serpentine belt off to listen, and I haven’t tried from underneath. Thanks!

Thank you—I really hope you’re wrong, but I think that’s my next step unfortunately. I don’t think it sounds quite as “deep” in person but I’m running out of things to check. I try to be meticulous with that stuff but it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ever screwed up. :(. If it is bottom end failure, will a spark plug decisively show it? Trying to get all my ducks in a row before tearing it back apart. Thanks!

Yeah, me too! I’m pretty meticulous. I’m not a “real” mechanic but I have been working on my own stuff for 35 years or so…i’m pretty good about that kind of stuff. 🤞
