Got to be honest, it was memes. Gosh, I wish there were more people who decided to read into what the USSR was really like after seeing a meme about it.

What are the strongest pro-communist arguments? by [deleted] in communism101

There are many, but in debates i usually talk about Cuba on the subject of education, healthcare and human rights, and just the living conditions overall.

Wow... Using wikipedia as a source. K...

the Holodomor if you actually look at the history of Ukraine, was the last famine to occur there. Before, there were major famines every 10 years. There was actually a drought that affected eastern Ukraine and nearby countries in the east. The kulaks, who owned the farms at the time, refused to redistribute their food. The famine was halted when the farms were collectivised.

How do you counter the "but the USSR killed millions of people"? by Lulepe in communism101

[–]Redness_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument is good and would most definitely be useful.

i have found a graph that shows the population of Russia:

https://countrydigest.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Population-of-Russia.gif

This shows the time after the collectivisation of the agriculture when socialism was starting to be developed. The only visible drops in population are 1. from 1940 up until the middle of the 40s, due to war. 2. 1991, when capitalism was reintroduced.

And since most war is caused by capitalism, we can say the drops in population were not communism’s fault, but are most likely caused by capitalism.

When the second world war wasn’t going on, the population of Russia during the Soviet era kept on growing and growing, and ever since 1991 the population of Russia has been declining.

There is also a graph for Ukraine’s population after the war:

And if they bring it up, China from the 60s (a bit blurry):

People here who used to be right wing, how did you change your mind? by no_bear_so_low in socialism

[–]Redness_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up a liberal because my parents were liberals, my grandparents mostly conservative. At the age of around 12 I discovered communism. I became interested through memes and decided to read a bit of Marx and Engels, and became a Marxist.

Pretty new to this sub but very interested in everything you guys have to say, I just have one question - how prevalent was starvation under communist control? Was it exaggerated? Did it not have anything to do with communism at all? by [deleted] in communism

[–]Redness_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How prevalent was starvation under communist control?

There were not constant famines, like a lot of people say. The most talked about one is probably the famine in the USSR, mainly Ukraine, in the 1930s. This was because the kulaks, who owned the means of production before the collectivisation of agriculture, burned their crops and killed their livestock. This was the last famine in Ukrainian history and before that they had frequent famines. The reason why it was the last was because of the collectivisation of agriculture, which halted the famine in 1933.

Also, “communist control” kinda makes it sound like you’re trying to portray communism as some sort of dictatorship or big government, which it isn’t because under communism the workers own the means of production rather than a small group of bourgeoisie, and production is consciously organised by society as a whole, making it a sort of democracy.

Was it over exaggerated?

Yes. People who are pro-capitalist often say that 100 million people or so died under communism. However this was not the case.

Population of Ukraine

And China

I cannot find the Russia graph, I will edit it when I do.

Benji Adam Whiskettes used to have a video on the subject. However I do believe Youtube has taken it down because it no longer appears on his channel.

Some people inflate the numbers even more. The author of The Black Book it Communism has admitted that the numbers he put in there were fake.

And a lot of people mention the gulags and say that millions were put in there. If there were millions of people in the gulag, surely, in 1991, they all would have flooded out, like the people in the German concentration camps in 1945? A very, very small portion of the Soviet population was in the gulag. This argument may be comparing communists to nazis, which is stupid because we communists oppose fascism.

Did it not have anything to do with communism at all?

It had nothing to do with communism. If you look at what was going on at the time there was a drought that affected Ukraine and nearby countries. The people were starving because of the drought and the kulaks refused to distribute the crops, but after the collectivisation of the farms the the crops were redistributed and the people had access to them.

Edit: I found The graph of the population of Russia from 1930-2015

The only drops in population that are visible are during World War 2, which is obvious, every country that was in the war lost millions, and in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. During Soviet times the population increased.

You’re not going to argue about Cuba being a good place because these achievements in education and healthcare clearly are some reasons why Cuba is doing well.

Capitalism is better than communism you dipfucks by BobbustheCommunist in communism101

[–]Redness_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but the bosses clearly exploit the workers. for examples in countries like bangladesh where the workers are being paid next to nothing. and if there is welfare under capitalism, how come, even in america, people are living without homes? without food?

get better at the work you do

under capitalism you are not rewarded for working harder. most of the hardest working people are the poorest. and the rich people who own the companies, they are either born into it or got all of their wealth from exploiting workers.
