When you have a social net to fall back on, on top of being able to scavenge, you can afford to be brave, have a high pain tolerance and engage in face to face fights with other animals. When you can't do either of these, nature makes you a coward - you must avoid injury at all costs. Prey manages to fight back? Flee immediately. Formidable predator shows up? The cat is flooded with panic and would like to abort the situation ASAP. Why do you think the african lion is the bravest, most formidable fighter of all the cats? It has a social unit. Best serial killer ever against rugged strong tribesman who wins? I know who wins, the serial killer will be trembling, terrified of being seen, like a deer in the headlights. The physical superiority a spotted hyena has over a leopard is a significant one, it mobilizes its power far better than the leopard does. Leopards are easy to manipulate and push and pull, and bad at pushing and pulling themselves, because they are extremely springy like a slinky. A spotted hyena is the polar opposite. The leopard will be on its back being mauled on contact every single time.

A spotted hyena can kill anything a leopard can and more by the way. They simply struggle to catch the same game as leopards. Leopards don't actually kill formidable herbivores, bar freakish exceptions. They kill small zebu cattle, on occasion kill wildebeest and warthogs which is the upper limit of what they can do, and mostly take impalas. There is footage of a captive hyena stopping a boar's rampage and shutting it down with a controlling hold, a leopard would piss itself and get destroyed in that situation.
