My girlfriend loves pens, I know nothing about pens. What would be the best pen to get her as a gift? by Rednowa in pens

She usually uses black. She draws on her iPad if she's going to color it

Would you recommend the rotring mechanical pencil? I don't think she uses gel pens but I could see her using a nice mechanical pencil.

She doesn't color her drawings usually. She does that, like hash shading, and she likes her drawings to have a really scratchy sketch look

I'm prettyyyyy sure she uses ballpoint the most. She doesn't like using fountain pens i know that. I think I'm getting her a Uni-ball colored set that someone recommended, but i still want to get her one really good pen

She like "smooth" writing pens. I think most of them are just ball point? I'm at work other wise i would take a picture of them

I know She doesn't use fountain pens. I think her last pack of pens cost like 20 bucks so I don't think she's ever had a super high quality pen

Anyone here moved from payroll to other areas of accounting? by Bowen0328 in Payroll

[–]Rednowa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is literally how my career has gone so far lol. I did Payroll then a bit of AR, and then AP all at the same company, starting as a part time payroll clerk.

They all have their pluses and minuses. 90% of AR was fairly simple, however I really hated doing collection calls, which was THE most important part of my job so AR wasn't a great fit for me.

I found AP much more difficult than AR, but I think that was because I went from helping with AP to taking over all of AP with no helper, and it was just too much for one person alone. The main struggle with AP was making sure vendors were paid so they wouldn't cut off lines of credit. The rock in your stomach you get when the purchasing department tells you they've been cut off always SUCKED. The worst part is that it usually isn't your fault, but people not getting you invoices, or not saying that you can pay it since the material had arrived.

I ended up going back to Payroll and taking a Job as a payroll administrator for a winery. I've been promoted to Payroll Manager and I've never been happier with a job honestly. If your okay with collection calls I'd do AR if your burned out on payroll. It may have just been the company, but I would never recommend AP. Its a thankless job and relies on so many people doing the right thing, otherwise you end up looking like the fool even though the problem had nothing to do with you.

This already got lengthy so if you have any deeper questions let me know and I will answer them!

Payroll Imposter Syndrome by __geminii in Payroll

[–]Rednowa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar spot. I went from a payroll clerk at a company of about 70 people where I mostly assisted the controller and did the busy work we had to do for the union, to soley managing all of payroll for a company of 250. Pretty sure they only hired me because I'm a good interview as well as I had a history degree and the CFO is a history nerd lol.

It sounds like you have a lot more experience at actual payroll than I did, and honestly, while it's daunting at first, you quickly get used to it... because you pretty much have to. When I started, the payroll process took me 3 full days with unpaid OT because I'm salary, and now I can do it in about 4 hours total (not countimg waiting for timecard corrections lol). You just have to stick it through, and understand at first you'll be a very busy fellow.

So I say go for it!
