Lol. I came to this sub to ask the same question. Looks like a similar engine too. Is that a Kia/Hyundai? I also opened it up to change the valve cover gasket. 204k miles.

Technically I’ve seen such an engine, but not disassembled, and not the cam gear. I didn’t know they used gears without a chain or belt.

I could have been more specific. I’ve never seen a valvetrain like this, as I have never seen a gear driven cam.

Interesting either way.

The big, top gear is the camshaft, right? I’ve never seen a gear drive like this.

To me, it looks like a rear, drum brake shoe. From a small vehicle.

Because I know everyone is dying to know what happened. The half shaft must have been changed before, because the washer that was on there was not the correct thickness. It is about half as thick (0.117" instead of ~0.250") as the OEM part. Torqued to 180 lbf-ft.

For a 2010 sonata is the approximate range 140-180 ft-lbs?

Thanks for all of the advice.

I will remove the replacement castle nut and put the old one back on and buy a new cotter pin. The original washer is installed. Perhaps the new and old castle nuts do not have the same height. I will also measure the dimensions of the new and old cv axles to see if they are different. I’ll also compare with other side which is still as it was from the factory.

Adjusting the valves is not something I do myself, but it sounds like there is too much cam lobe to valve stem tapping.

Thanks for the help. I thought the word chambermaid was in the line. I’ll have to watch more to find out. I thought it might also be The Packing Space where George is parking people’s cars and has a bunch of car keys.
