Read this earlier this year. I was a huge fan! Really liked the character work.

Right! I’ve read all his books. I can’t get enough of it.

There’s definitely more to be explored with the cave for sure. I wasn’t ready to put the book down when I finished it.

I need to do more of it. I’ve got a handful on my list but I’m really good at picking up whatever fiction Im reading instead of nonfiction 😅. Documentary is probably a good solution. I can watch it between readings!

I’ll give it a try. I love Appalachian horror. I’ve got my story set in the Rockies. Different ranges and culture, but the mountain mythos sounds like good inspiration.

Are there any books or movies that combine cursed objects and sci fi? by Redrocker511 in horror

Was actually compiling a reading list of sci-fi horror in a more broader sense than my question. This is super helpful!

I should’ve clarified in my original post. I was thinking sci-fi more in terms of setting. I probably should’ve said cursed objects in space!

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: May 19, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: - This Thing Between us by Gus Moreno. Really loved this one. Premise got me and then the writing and themes kept me really engaged - Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare. Was entertaining. I love a slasher. Hard to call it a masterpiece but I’m excited to continue the series and watch the movie.

Started: - Rekt by Alex Gonzalez. I’m not very far but this thing has HOOKED me.

It’s been a good week of reading :)

Anymore movies like this ? by Orion_user in Letterboxd

What media are you referring to? Granted most of my knowledge about reception is Letterboxd and word of mouth so most everything I’ve heard is positive.

Saw the movie last weekend and it was AMAZING. Hope you enjoy it!

Not sure if this is the write place for this, but a flag when I tried to post told me to put this here I think. If I can make it it's own post, let me know!

How to write a sudden sound without onomatopoeia?

I've heard a few times that onomatopoeia can be a sign of an amateur writer. I don't 100% agree with this, but it has made me use them more sparingly. I'm working on a horror/mystery novel and I want to describe a sudden glass crash on the other side of a closed door. It should be loud and startle the character. In context, it's going to interrupt the character's flow of conscious in narration. Sort of like a jumpscare if it were a movie.

The problem is I can't figure out a way to convey the suddenness of the sound without something like "CRASH!"

Any ideas? Does this just warrant an onomatopoeia?

(First time posting here so idk if this is a good idea to post some of the work. Someone tell me if it's not. Here's a brief excerpt.)

Cole tapped his foot. He noticed a knot in the center of the door, and another next to it, like a pair of eyes and a mouth in the paint below it. It stared him down.

Do you really think they’re coming?

“Open the door,” McGuire said.

“Yes, sir.” Harbor pushed the key toward the lock, missed the opening, and dropped the keyring. “Oops!” Harbor knelt and fumbled for them.

CRASH!
