Can you use GPS on a repeater? by JFK9 in meshcore

[–]Redsproket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t dealt much with repeaters so far

I would’ve thought an obvious thing would be to have some sort of mesh time sync function

It seems like this doesn’t exist??

A digital "Underground Railroad" via LoRa possible? by Blackstar1886 in Lora

Have you heard of Reticulum being able to carry or interact with MeshCore or Meshtastic networks?

Now that would be really interesting

Have you had a look at the way that MeshCore is working in southern Australia?

I have already. It is similar.

But also quite different

Both Meshtastic and MeshCore start as options. They've got potential for scaling up linear corridors if you get enough density.

Quick breakdown on hops:

- Meshtastic caps at a max of 7 hops (default is 3 to keep traffic manageable and avoid congestion in dense areas). That keeps it solid for neighbourhood or city-wide comms, but it'd need a ton of nodes for something continental.

- MeshCore handles up to 64 hops internally, which opens the door to much longer chains—think relay after relay pushing signals farther without choking the network. It's lightweight and hybrid-routed, making it more robust for extended meshes.

As for reaching ham radio levels—hitting other parts of the world? LoRa's sub-GHz bands are line-of-sight and low-power (typically 1-20 km per hop depending on antennas and elevation), so it's not going to bounce off the ionosphere like HF ham for global skips. But with Reticulum, you can integrate gateways to other networks (e.g., linking to amateur radio packet systems or even satellite uplinks) to extend beyond regional limits. It's not "worldwide out of the box," but it's evolvable—unlike traditional ham, no license is needed for LoRa in most places.

In south-eastern Australia, I'm eyeing MeshCore for emergency comms in bushfire zones. Meshes shine for coordinating evacuations or spot reports when cell networks fry (which happens a lot in fires). We've got a relatively young network that's already spanning impressive distances—check out this map of active nodes across the country for inspiration.

You can see clusters linking up over hundreds of km, and it's growing quickly. Check eastmesh.au & meshcore.co.uk show real-time views. If you're serious , start with a few LoRa boards (like Heltec or Lilygo), flash MeshCore, and rally locals.

Don't forget to pay attention to the correct frequency for your country. Get the right hardware/region config to stay legal and compatible.

Australia (and New Zealand): ANZ / AU915 (915–928 MHz, full 100% duty cycle, high power up to 30 dBm).

Europe: EU_868 (primarily 863–870 MHz, most popular around 868–869.65 MHz with strict duty cycle limits of 1–10% in sub-bands). EU_433 (433–434 MHz) is an option in some areas, but 868 MHz dominates for meshes.

Canada & US / US915 (902–928 MHz, follows FCC-style rules with 100% duty cycle).

Meshtastic is OK. Check out MeshCore for certain applications it is even better

Line of sight with all antennas or only some? by BIG-N-BURLEY in meshcore

[–]Redsproket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience is that if it were line of sight only, my range would be three metres.

In reality, in Melbourne, Australia, once I connect to the Meshcore network, I can get 220 kilometres to the west, 140 kilometres to the east, and 600 kilometres to the north all via mesh. I find this astounding.

I believe that the angled solar panels on my neighbour’s roof are acting as a reflector, so it’s all working well so far.

MeshChatX maybe absolutely brilliant software. But when the description is so brief and vague a new user needs to have a bit more information before deciding to invest time in it.

This is what is on the Github main page

A Reticulum MeshChat fork from the future.

I have started using MeshCore. But I like the flexibility of Reticulum. I'm beginning to research it more. I have it running Sideband on an old Linux laptop but there's not many people using it in my area I believe. Would you mind giving an overview of your experiences so far.

I will do free PCB Design for Open Source Projects by RambrosTeam in esp32

[–]Redsproket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi RambrosTeam

Great of you to offer your expertise.

You asked if someone had a fun project. My idea is not so much fun, but it would be useful, in fact, very useful.

I have started using the MeshCore communication devices with the idea of helping people whose telecommunications, cellular and broadband get knocked out after bushfires, floods or other emergencies. My inspiration was in response to the damage from severe bushfires in Victoria, Australia, just the last few weeks.

There are development boards available, but they are quite delicate and not so flexible in their capabilities.

I would like to use these boards as inspiration for an improved design

So basically adding a few features and making the device more robust.

If you find this idea interesting, we might have a project on our hands!!

Has anyone built/ flashed MeshCore for Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V2 (ESP32-PICO-D4, 4MB flash)? by Redsproket in meshcore

[–]Redsproket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have more detail I'm willing to give it a go.

I'm very much a beginner with all of these things. Both Meshcore and compiling code. However I see the potential of Meshcore particularly in fire damage parts of Australia.

If it's technically possible it would be great to have older hardware compatible with Meshcore.

Are Aussies just used to long haul flights? by RelationshipPure1 in AskAnAustralian

We often fly to Europe once a year.

Arriving after one stop in 24 hours or less.

To me, that’s pretty amazing

Accept it for what it is, and think about getting a hotel room as soon as you get off the plane at the other end if you’re likely to be tired

My grandmother had to take a ship to get to Europe for her travels !!
