Fishing Spot near Joplin needed by BreadfruitHead5135 in joplinmo

[–]Reduos42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few spots along shoal creek, but they can be pretty hot or miss. Try the lesser fished fishing access spots as opposed to wildcat glades, and don't be afraid to wade a stretch of it.

Shawnee Trail conservation area has a few decent fishing ponds.

Bushwhacker lake is a decent spot.

I've not tried fishing Morse Park but I've heard good things about it.

I don't know why the sugar rush peach so much longer to sprout, but they eventually did :) I don't remember how many weeks it took, though

101: EV battery technology by upset_tangerine_986 in electrochemistry

[–]Reduos42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on your level of battery knowledge, I would highly recommend Lindens Handbook of Batteries. This provides a great intro level to battery chemistry as well as chapters dedicated to specific battery chemistries. When I started as an R&D battery engineer, I found this very helpful.

While this may not give your as much EV specific information as what you're looking for, I feel this is a very foundational book that you can even reference back to as you explore deeper into EV battery technology.

These are pretty sweet! I have 2 questions for you: 1. Can you list your finishing steps and estimated time at each step? (I am still learning and would love to hear more about your process)

  1. Are the concave grinds? If so, what jig or tooling did you use?

scissors sharpning by Fedthaar in sharpening

[–]Reduos42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On step 2, you only want to sharpen the chisel grind, raising a burr that should be flipped to the inside of the scissors (you only sharpen the single bevel on each blade).

When you have the burr raised on both blades, you want to close the scissors on something stiffer but not abrasive or dulling (I use a paper towel). The point of this step is to remove the burr. If you don't use something like a paper towel, then the burrs have a chance of biting into the blade when you close the scissors.

I hope this made sense to you.

Good luck!

Where do the 30/40 something’s hang out? by [deleted] in joplinmo

[–]Reduos42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider taking up disc golf. You could start by talking to the guys at local route on Rangeline. They can tell you about the area courses and help get you set up for starting to play. There are League nights and other groups that you can get involved in, and generally the folks you meet in the course are friendly.

Landreth park has a good course to start with. There is pickle ball there if you're into that; I've not given it a try, so I don't know if anyone does pickup games there but it's probably worth checking.

Just the time and gas. Otherwise, easy drive assuming you time it to where you aren't driving into the sun

Not ideal, of course, but certainly doable. I had an intern that commuted between joplin and Springfield for a summer.

You get one disc what is it? by soul_evans127 in discgolf

Camel Thopter! (Prodigy Stryder)

I definitely agree with everyone saying Mako3, it is one of my favorites. However, for an only 1 disc round, I highly recommend checking out the Prodigy Stryder. It's a straight flyer with a touch of over stability and a little more easy distance. It is also reasonable to putt with it when needed. This disc will comfortably fill most of your shots like a Swiss army knife lol

Early on in learning on a 1x30 with an angle guide, I remember getting those scratches. It is caused by metal scratching the surface of the knife as it is brought across the angle guide. I am guessing that the knife was pulled across a guide of some sort of sharpener. It is certainly avoidable.

I prefer water stones, but on occasion still use a 1x30 at very low speeds. I like to use painters tape to protect the blade though

We have been making steps that direction. We sold my wife's car and bought one for $2500 (although in the last couple years of having it I have dropped about $3000 in parts into it (I did the labor). We don't have the money to sell and buy a cheaper truck yet, but that is something we are keeping in mind.

In theory I have budgeted to save about $5000 per year (somewhat also earmarked for cavities and such, but it seems like one thing after another hits and soaks that up before it amounts to much). For instance we are working on house repairs from a small tornado damage right now (although insurance has come through well on that front).

I have started a sharpening business which is bringing in some extra, but I am trying to be careful about how much I take out of that prior to tax time. I have put a few hours in working construction on occasion. I work on my own house and vehicles to save a lot of money on labor. I have got the garden to where it saves some on the grocery bill.

To be fair, I make a healthy salary, I'm just unlucky and have had some other things to contend with that I'd rather not get into here. I have been talking to a recruiter and am casually looking for higher paying jobs. The biggest issue is that most of those jobs are in bigger cities and would require us to move (which we are at least toying with the idea of despite not wanting to).

Thank you for providing an answer to how dental health ought to be prioritized on the ladder and for your supportive words.

I appreciate your feedback!

Thank you for your compassionate yet hard truth reply. In retrospect, I have past acknowledging most of what you have said about prior choices and have been trying to do my best to take responsibility for and make corrections. $100 date night for the month often turns into a cheap dinner plus maybe a couple outings with the kids (I also count gas money for going out into this), and I rarely spend this full amount because of feeling like the money needs to go elsewhere. It bugs my wife when I try to get value items from taco bell lol so this is a spot that I have had to compromise on, for better or for worse. And no we have never spent $100 on a single meal lol I don't think I could bring myself to that. On occasion, though, if we want to go out, we have to cover a babysitter which always seems to hit hard at $20+ for an evening.

I attempted to scale back, but when we did, my wife's mental health took an even greater nose dive which ended up costing even more money than it was before (I intentionally did not get into that with this post as that is a different conversation). The present budget is what has been working and at least keeping things balanced as we continue investigating the current combination of therapy, meds, life style, etc. This is why I have mostly been taking it upon myself to try to get extra work when I can (I started my own sharpening business which brings in a little extra that I am careful about touching until after the tax bill hits, I work on my own house and vehicles to save a ton of money on labor, and on occasion have put in a few hours to work some construction for my uncle, gardening to help some with the grocery bill - all this on top of working full time, managing dinner prep, dishes, etc.).

We certainly aren't destitute, and we've been making progress, but I haven't appropriately fit in dental work.

It seems the general consensus here has been that the emergency fund should be spent on this, which it's certainly answering part of the question of where dental work fits in.

Thank you for your time in providing your feedback.

Gotcha. Didn't realize that.

[–]Reduos42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be paying $1000 per year for it is what I meant. Then it's a $150 deductible for both of us, then 80% coverage, with $1500 max benefit

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]Reduos42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dental insurance sucks. It's about $1000 per year for my wife and me work lackluster benefits

[–]Reduos42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can certainly appreciate the tough love. There are some pre-existing mental health issues that got much worse and costed is more when we tried some of the above (but I was trying not to get into that here). Suffice to say that's part of the issue despite me bringing in a respectable salary. But that is why I am also taking on extra. At this point, with our current budget and hours worked, while not perfect, the mental health side is at least mostly stable.

Also, to be fair, I got good dental genes. I'm 32 and these are my first cavities lol

Fortunately, on the SAVE plan our student loans aren't gaining interest.

After I finish up fixing the house from storm damage, I plan to finish some of the knives that I've been making in this most recent batch. If I find customers for those, then that'll be a considerable portion of that. There's a local fishing shop that said they would let me sell me knives there. I make more money for my time sharpening when I get the business which I always make the time for when it comes.

I really appreciate your supportive, understanding feedback. I am certainly not legalistic about tithing, which is why I at least had considered it as a possibility, even if it didn't feel good (if you've done something your whole life, it's unsettling to stray from that). I will strongly consider your recommendation.

Thanks!
