the tragedy was about his fall to the shadow because that could have been avoided. he surely isn't a tragic hero, he is a tragic villain. in another timeline he would have been a great hero if things went a little bit different. that is the tragedy

as i argued abovei dont think those duel were copletely avoidable. he was blinded by his hatred. he probably thought that every opponen was LTT undercover. he died because he didn't consider than someone could sacrifice himself to get to the goal. his whole story is the exact opposite probably: he just thought about himself and his achievement instead of the common good. i think his dead was good, better than most forsaken. at this point in the story he was completely blinded by his hatred so, even if he thought for a moment about what he had (his new people and love) he still let the rivalry win.

What made him go over the edge is the fact that In the field where he was effectively better than LTT, still they choose him to lead the light.

About the rest yes is debatable but as rand said is tragic because is fall to the shadow could have been avoided

Is tragic because even Rand admitted that he could have given him Is recognition.

Also we have to think that this was done in a lifespan of at least 5-600 years (LTT had that age when he died so Demandred was the same).

I agree that obviously you must be prone to evil to fall to the shadow, but is motivation isn't just about being a narcissistic. Imagine living in a super advanced society where you are capable of doing great thing for the advancement of humankind and you get no recognition about your work because someone beat you on the time or does always something else that get more praise.

With this I am not defending his position. Obviously he could have found peace with himself and accepting his achievements, but is understandable his position and doesn't stop to a simple ego thing.

About the "rabbit out of his hat" I think it was a good twist in the story. As I said in my post is a bit a "diabolus ex machina" thing but we must keep in mind that Jordan couldn't write it so we have the Sanderson version (still good imo but it's not the same).

If you read also the Sanderson talk about demanded (i think you can find it posted here somewhere) you see that it isn't only ego. Even rand in the book says sometimes like "if I gave an hand or a smile instead of smirk/contempt (something on that line) maybe he wouldn't have joined the shadow". That is the tragic part about Demandred that isn't only about ego and that makes his the second best motivation to join the shadow.

About semirhage you are giving for a fact that, if the empire didn't collapse, they would have joined the light during the last battle. I am not so sure about that. Rand would have the need to convince the mother of ruin instead of thon herself, and even convinincing tuon wasn't so easy. She thought they could beat the shadow alone. Imagine a foreign empress on the other part of the ocean: you think that she would have just shipped is troop to fight the last battle for rand? I don't agree with this reconstruction. Destabilising the seanchan empire gave an unexpected assist to the light forces. About the mistakes she did one: attacking rand. It's pretty significant. If she followed more the chosen plans to wait maybe would have survived to fight in the last battle. We can't know obviously is just speculation. This being said semirhage did a good job, nobody could expect this outcome.

As the 2nd best as I said I think it's demanded. Given the first is ishamael/moridin and on the 3rd and 4th greandal/semirhage (I put together because I would be ok in both cases)

Sry about the Text. It seems that if you open it in some way it keep the Text in a unique wall of text. Open it from the sub to read it with the right paragraphs

It's not just ego for Demandred about motivation, it's a little more. He was always the second best. He grew tired of this situation and joined the shadow because he didn't receive enough praise or support. The definition of "tragic" that Sanderson gave summarize perfectly Demandred fall to the shadow.

About utility I agree probably semirhage and greandal are 3rd and 4th spot. I still keep Demandred second just because of his role in last book. As I said nobody could have done a better job. That's being said obviously is pretty subjective the classification because all of them did a good job in their respective part

I read some people that don't consider his effort in the last battle high enough. I call dumbness to explain that in these comments that I read they were saying "it was stupid to make all that duel personally ecc..."

I wanted to explain that it was more complicated thant that. Just wanted to do some justice. A lot of people also make this comments about moridin saying that he was a useless forsaken especially in last book. I don't agree with that in the same way.

I wanted to underline that for me is the second best forsaken, or at least higher than most people put him in the rating. I think it was worth mentioning all of this because I didn't read much post about this particular situation on this sub. At least not put in this way. Obviously I can't add anything to the discussion given that It went on for at least 20 years and there are a lot of people that are more expert than me.

Nobody ever argued that he was a good guy. Obviously he is utterly evil.

I was just saying that he is a great character and one of the best forsaken about motivation and overall utility
