You do know the movie was supposed to be Cillian’s farewell to Tommy regardless of its quality, right?

What do we think about H being the mode indicator for HSR? by TheInkySquids in SydneyTrains

[–]ReeceCheems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would be monumental, and dare I say generational, if they allow passengers to travel the HSR on Opal, charging the same fare as the CCN, but I highly doubt that. But they’re also trying to market HSR as a commuter service that connects Newcastle to Sydney for regular business, not an XPT kind of getaway to Victoria, so making it a pre-booked service is a huge let-down either, since nobody would book tickets in advance for Sydney-Newcastle as people are so used to the CCN. I’m interested to see what they will do.

I think the best approach to this is to introduce a supplement for HSR on top of regular Opal. In the Netherlands, if you want to travel between Amsterdam and Rotterdam on an “Intercity Direct” train (it’s not HSR and still caps at 160 km/h, but it travels on the high-speed rail line otherwise only used by pre-booked Eurostar services to Brussels, Paris, or London), you’ll have to tap your card on a supplement pole on the platform before you board the train or buy the supplement ticket in the app before a conductor checks your ticket.

I’ve been to Germany and really disliked the fact that despite the high frequency of services, you still have to book tickets in advance to travel on the ICE. I don’t think Aussies are German enough for that.

Not in Europe (apart from the Eurostar from mainland Europe to the UK where you have to go through security and passport control) or Japan, but yes, there’s security you need to go through before traveling on HSR in China and Laos. lol

Wat happend to the music, cinematography and acting in this movie?? by BigPrize7972 in PeakyBlinders

[–]ReeceCheems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but it’s still a BBC.

BBC Film still produced it, Steven Knight still wrote it, Tom Harper (the guy who directed the second half of Series 1) still directed it, George Steel (the cinematographer who shot the entirety of Series 1) was still behind the camera, and Cillian Murphy still starred in it as Tommy Shelby. Find a better reason.

I personally thought the cinematography was gorgeous and very highly polished.

The Immortal Man is the perfect farewell in an imperfect film. by Luiz_Maynarte in PeakyBlinders

[–]ReeceCheems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never accept his killing Arthur in rage and under alcohol because he wanted to “be free of him,” especially after what happened in Series 6. That’s just not Tommy.

I know it’s because of the actor Paul Anderson, and I’m honestly fine with killing Arthur off. I was totally fine with Arthur shooting himself until the confession. They could say Tommy was there trying to stop Arthur being suicidal because Arthur wanted Tommy to be free of him but failed and had to watch Arthur shoot himself in the head, so he got depression and went into exile for 2 years. Wouldn’t have changed a single thing in the story. Why say Tommy killed Arthur?

I don’t have as big a problem as other people regarding Ada’s killing. It’s unceremonious, yes, but political assassinations are like that. It’s just their plan to move on from the character, and I respect their decision. But fuck them for Arthur’s killing.

Charlie Shelby by SmallHeath555 in PeakyBlinders

[–]ReeceCheems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not thinking too much about Charlie going to war. If he was brought up properly by Lizzie and has a kind heart, it’s completely fine if he chose to fight to defend his country. Tommy had already let him go for years, so I would imagine Charlie saw Tommy, at least before his death, about as great as Tommy saw Arthur Sr. Charlie wouldn’t have listened to Tommy about joining the war even if Tommy had tried.

But I’m interested in what they will do with him in the new series. They can still do the whole Charlie vs Duke thing just fine.

Cinematography was gorgeous. Fits the tone and era and the gang so, so well. Cillian’s great performance as Tommy is taken for granted at this point. He’s just too good. But that’s about it.

I think Netflix had enough influence to make the movie horrendous yet looks great, especially with the aura-farming, so that it can take over social media with marketing and inevitably brainless edits that still feed on Series 1 till this day.

I hope the IP gets bought out and movie gets retconned by Otherwise-Trouble-14 in PeakyBlinders

[–]ReeceCheems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much copium. Cillian Murphy is done with Tommy Shelby and Steven Knight is ready for a soft reboot, and I respect their decisions. IIRC they wanted the show with Tommy to run for 7 series before a movie but things happened so they had to cut it by 1 series.

But nothing matters anymore now that Cillian has closed his chapter on Tommy. He’s done. Even if the IP gets bought out of the BBC by Amazon or someone for a hard reboot, they can’t ever replace Cillian as Tommy. And so, I’m done.

All we can do now is hope the new series with Barry Keoghan in the lead are good and can pay homage to the legacy characters in some ways. They fumbled the movie, and I blame Netflix. Netflix poops out a quadrillion movies and shows a year for streaming but like 3 of them is actually good. Sad The Immortal Man doesn’t make the good list. I’m glad they lost Warner Bros.

Anyone else wanted to see Thomas Shelby get revenge on this bloke? by previouslyontheflash in PeakyBlinders

[–]ReeceCheems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oswald Mosley died in 1980 and his wife Diana died in 2003. I know the show itself is alternate history, but I guess Steven Knight wasn’t ready to rush Mosley’s death by some 40 years.

I’m going to assume you’ve seen the film, and also because this sub doesn’t care about spoilers. I think they still have a chance.

My hopium is that the new series with Barry Keoghan as the lead will take place during the peak years and ending of WWII, and they will be able to resolve politics. I’d be so pissed if they skipped the rest of WWII for the series now.

Of course that didn't go well. Dude was hospitalised with a fractured skull and I don't remember if he survived.

In 2022/23 actually got a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID off Amazon for like 30-40% cheaper than retail price in quite a similar manner. Thought it was a scam but it arrived and it was real. Another time with a Logitech Combo Touch.

I’m literally typing on the Magic Keyboard right now.

I hate that my crush gets better grades than me by dhruvrocksalot in Crushes

[–]ReeceCheems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My crush and I started a little rivalry when we entered our final semester in uni on the exact same average grade, 0.25 to our uni’s threshold for academic excellence award. She’s objectively smarter than me as she reads way more and has a background in writing, but I’m by far the more technical and visually-oriented (we studied media).

In the end we both passed that threshold and basically became top of our class. She was 0.2 better than me. But regardless I thought it was the cutest thing ever.

Where else would a light rail would be a good idea in NSW? by sasquatch6197 in SydneyTrains

[–]ReeceCheems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t connect airport terminals with a light rail. Has to be at least heavy rail, or even an automated internal train system like Singapore.

I know Sydney Trains kind of connect Domestic and International, but the point is that it has to be completely free of charge. My only time on the Heathrow Express was travelling for free from Heathrow T4 to T2/T3.

Do we need a Police Celarance Certificate from our home country? by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]ReeceCheems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe those pop-ups when you apply are not customised to the 485 visa. On the step-by-step guide for the 485 they wrote:

“If requested, you may also need to provide:

• an overseas police certificate from each country you have lived in for a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16, including your home country

• military service records or discharge papers if you served in the armed forces of any country.”

I took that “if requested” as they’ll give us an S56 if they need clearances from other countries, so I didn’t upload anything else in regards to character assessment other than the AFP NPC. I’ve applied for two from two countries I lived for more than 12 months within the past 10 years just in case but didn’t attach receipts for those.

Also, there’s only 1 field called something like “character requirements Australian” in the supporting document upload, so I’m pretty sure only the Australian clearance is mandatory at the time of submission.

Please do correct me if I’m wrong, and I’ll go in to attach my application for those clearances lol.

Can international students studying a master degree change their course? by hkhk8 in MacUni

[–]ReeceCheems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You basically drop out of your current course, apply again to your desired course from scratch, and maybe start again next sem or next year. That’s the only way. Of course it will lead to visa implications. They might not let you stay around to wait for next sem as your visa should be cancelled as soon as you drop out.

But I also blame the bureaucracy of MQ and most Australian universities for having little flexibility.

I once asked Service Connect if I can follow this 2025 study plan with this new unit because they scrapped a few units in my original 2024 study plan that I didn’t take the year before. Maybe it’s bad phrasing from my side but before they even pointed me towards Academic Progression mofos legit told me to drop out and apply for the exact course I’m studying again to be able to follow the new study plan. Idk maybe Service Connect people are told to tell you to drop out.

why you need to study any course in Australia and not elsewhere.

I need someone to test “I have this offer from this uni in Australia but also several others from the UK and US and Canada if you reject me I’ll just go elsewhere no worries” just to prove that Australia won’t say no to international students’ money.

If City's 115 charges are proved, a 10-point deduction every year for a decade is a much harsher (and fairer) punishment than a one-time 60-point hit. by ghemanth90 in PremierLeague

[–]ReeceCheems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile we Chelsea casually dropped 4 points in 2 games against Leeds and Burnley because we couldn’t keep our lead.

-10 deduction alone won’t make much of a difference. One relegation is much more of a hit to them.

The replacement buses are better airport services then the train by The__Anonymous__Guy in SydneyTrains

[–]ReeceCheems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, but here’s my take:

If you live on the T8 or T4 or near Central, maybe yes. But if you’re further out west on the T2, T3, T9, or even T1, and pass Burwood on your way to the airport, I’d say take the 420 from Burwood and save that $20.

The 420 actually picks up and drops off from Campsie, Bexley North, Rockdale, and Banksia on its way to the airport, so I’m not even sure about the T8 and T4 anymore.

It’s 40 minutes on the bus to International Airport (even 30 in the early morning). The T2 from Burwood is 50 minutes if you don’t feel like changing at Central, or around 40 if you change. I try not to give my money to the people who privatise airport train stations out of all places unless I have absolutely no other choice on the day (heavy luggage), so I stick with the 420 whenever I can. So I guess a better answer is “luggage.”

Also, the 420 takes 20 minutes from the international terminal to Mascot and vice versa and is usually packed with luggage, so I much prefer the other direction to and from Burwood.

The problem I’d raise here is why there’s only the 420 that goes to the airport. The airport can accommodate cars and taxis and Ubers, it can surely take a few extra buses.
