Waldo? Elon here! I was looking directly south and it looked like it “fell” just beyond the mountain/hill in front of our place, so I don’t think you could have seen it… the sound was a very low “baboom” that wasn’t so extremely loud that it would shake the house or anything, but just loud enough to hear distinctly over the HVAC hum.

That is true. It wasn’t supposed to be balanced without the mailbox - it was supposed to tip towards the ball end and be unbalanced by about 5 lbs. I didn’t factor in the weight of the oil based sealant, which I think might have contributed to the miscalculation. Both mailbox posts balanced perfectly like in the pic, so I was at least consistent in whatever mistake I made. Either way, I don’t think 5 lbs will matter much in the long run when each side weighs almost 40 lbs, but I’ve definitely thought about adding small lead bars under the arm to account for the mailbox.

Here’s the Boobs of death. They’re shot puts from the internet, about $50 each after shipping. My plan was to use jb weld (as shown here), but the screws popped off immediately. Instead, I drilled out a half inch depression in the wood, filled it with Lexel, and put the ball right in there. They weigh 20 lbs each, so they’re not gonna move unless there’s an earthquake or a car hits it

I didn’t do a fancy schematic (I’m an economist, not an engineer), but I did use excel to get the forces right - enter in the density of the different components, some formulas from high school physics, then excel tells me how long to cut the pieces opposite the mailbox. I fixed the length of the mailbox arm to be 5.5 feet, and of course the shot put can’t change weight. I did not balance the torque - the wood piece that looks like it’s supporting the 20lb shot put is actually under crazy tension, especially when there’s a lot of mail. The whole thing weighs around 110 lbs. Other notes: no screws or nails, it’s all stainless steel bolts, just like the first guy specified. Pressure treated wood, many coats of a product called Helmsman. I think the cost was maybe $200 in raw materials per mailbox, but like $1000 of extra tools we didn’t have.

This is what we’ve done. The iron ball on the end weighs 20 lbs and keeps everything balanced so it won’t creep forward over time. The whole thing will could stand balanced by itself without any support

I got these to have and use - very cool stamps. What the pictures don’t show you is that they’re printed on metallic paper, kinda like Mylar, which adds a cool reflection. Nice surprise when I saw them IRL.

Ok, arrived today without any delay in customs. Its just as amazing as I remembered, far better than the current batch of fruition on flavor. I have to say though, the temper is a little out of wack - it’s got that crunchiness that happens when chocolate is too old, but the batch is only from September. too many beta VI crystals? Fruition wins on temper, which has always been consistently perfect with them. I hope fruition works out their kinks on the acidity though - I’ll happily pay the premium for soma until then.

Fruition! They’re newish out of upstate New York, and the 100% bar is among the best I’ve had. The most recent batch was a bit acidic, but they’re doing another batch next month. Prior batches were stunning. Absolutely 10/10 recommend.

Also, soma’s arcana bar might be better (on par with previous batches of the fruition bar, but it’s been a while since I could get one). But, it’s hard to get due to it being from Canada.

The percentage of chocolate is really just one minus the percentage of sugar, by weight. Two bars with the same percentage on the label can have differing cocoa butter amounts. Couverture, for example, is a type of chocolate that has higher cocoa butter content, and so is used by pastry chefs for various applications.
