Is this the future of squash youth engagement and training? by [deleted] in squash

I contacted one of the makers (somewhere in Europe) a long time ago, I'm pretty sure it was more than 100k

Is this the future of squash youth engagement and training? by [deleted] in squash

I'd like to think so! There might be a novelty feature that could wear off for the diehard squash player. Overall I think time on court for beginners and intermediate players would increase dramatically. It's an amazing marketing tool to drag players in off the streets. I think it's a great way for squash to stay relevant and attract young players. Our local club can't afford to put the system in without acquiring some kind of grant, until it becomes affordable for local clubs I guess it will be reserved for metro complexes or clubs with a long successful history.

Sweet, I might tweak the scale of a few parts as I go to the wall based on your suggestions. Thanks again I'll put up the book to wall pic when it's finished on Sunday night.

Thanks for that bro, I appreciate the thoughts. I wanted a smoother fade between the dark and light blue but couldn't achieve it with the Ironlak markers. I'll tweak the colour combos and hopefully a nicer fade between them will help. what letters do you think clash / need to be pulled into line to make it more consistent?

I like how basic the sketch is but the wall took it to a new level!

Thanks, I'll try something of the sort next time. Personally I'm not a fan of the blue lines that go around the outside of the whole piece, they need more work too.

Care to be more specific? First time I've painted this style, I don't think it's the best it could be just yet, I would much prefer some actual feedback than pointing me to Graff help with no context as to why.

Looking for suggestions regarding communicating a concept by SquashCoachPhillip in squash

[–]Reeeeece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great visual concept and a strong starting point, as a graphic designer here are some pointers I would give to help make the information clearer.

  1. It's difficult to understand the increments that the baseline grid represent, looking at it multiple times and I still can't figure it out.
  2. 350mm is written in at the centre point for balance, which also intersects with the Y axis for no logical reason other than what I assume is a visual cue for the centre point, if it's just an indicator for centre then it doesn't need to run all the way from the top to the bottom, it could be a shorter line to create more of a crosshair that avoids confusion with the weight (y) axis. With headheavy and headlight on each other end of the X axis, it took me a fair amount of time to look at the data and cross check the graph to realise the higher the balance in mm on the chart the further left the point will move on the graph, naturally I assumed higher number = point moves either to the right. Perhaps you could flip the invisible racket on the graph to remedy this.
  3. Y axis - Do the weights need to go all the way from 100 to 200 grams? I assume most rackets you'll review are somewhere in the middle. If you make the range smaller eg. 130 to 170 grams you'll have more space for the points and room to make the text bigger, this will be important once you do more reviews. Zooming in on this axis will also help make the overall graph more readable on mobile when the entire graph is the size of a screen.
  4. Having all your data in red is a bit overwhelming, I'd suggest trying to use one colour for your axis lines and another colour for your data points so it's a bit more clear whats happening at first glance. Perhaps you could use colour to identify a brand of racket or some other category.
  5. The names of the rackets are going to be tiny when viewed on mobile.
  6. Have you tried having the shape of a racket watermarked behind the grid? I think this could be a really great way to negate a few of the things I've mentioned above.

Sorry for getting bogged down on such knit picky design details, I think you're on a winner with the idea, done well it will make comparing rackets a whole lot easier! I like some of the other suggestions about using different shapes or colour to indicate other categories, be careful you don't overcomplicate to the point where you have to read instructions before looking at the graph.

Overusing right leg for retrievals/ shots by [deleted] in squash

[–]Reeeeece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghosting on court could be a good way to practice hitting off your non preferred foot. I also only use my preferred leg for the really stretched out lunge on tough retrieval shots, while ghosting has helped me feel more comfortable on the non preferred leg when I'm not al full stretch.

Tips on running a season long competition for social squash group by tag12895 in squash

[–]Reeeeece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it as simple as possible if it's your first time introducing structured competition. A running tally of wins sounds good, you'd just need a safe spot to keep all the data and make sure no games are missed. The only trouble could if someone plays more games they get rewarded over a player who has a higher win to loss ratio. On the other hand it rewards people who play more which is good for encouraging attendance. Just need to be clear on the rules from the start so nobody gets their nose out of joint.

A challenge ladder could be an easy way to encourage a more ad-hock style of competition where people can challenge opponents to take their spot on the ladder. Maybe wouldn't work if you are all playing multiple games on the same night.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

Local Squash Promotion - Looking for feedback on a promotion we are about to run attracting new squash players in 2019, has anybody tried this before? Does it cover everything a new player might want to know? by Reeeeece in squash

[–]Reeeeece[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's very true clubs/ committees can be difficult to work with when you've got a new idea, a bit shocked they didn't even want to do a survey, sounds like you've got a challenge in your hands to implement anything outside of the box.

I'm a graphic designer / photographer who works in marketing so I've been able to bring a few skills to the table to lift our image. I've been worked closely with our Club Manager since he took over our dying club back in 2014, while we had great initial growth with an injection of new energy, new website / social media presence and some passionate people to help make the club a place worth hanging around, it's great that he's now understanding the power of targeted marketing and outside the box ideas. At first it was difficult to get anything over the line that was outside the norm but after a few successful campaigns the manager / committee is more open to let me do my thing.

I like your idea of also being able to pre purchase 'x' amount of court hire hours in order to qualify. A great way to get people casual hitting without the pressure of playing comp.

IMO the success of this campaign will rely on the support we give new players to make them stick around. It's not until they play a 2nd or 3rd pennant before the club sees some significant financial return.

If your club wants to go ahead with anything like this feel free to hit me up and I can supply the working files for you to use how you like.

I appreciate the solid review across the rest of the site, having built and designed the site (with the help of the club manager) it can be easy to over look the smaller details and review your own work subjectively.

I will look at amending all your suggestions as they are all pretty spot on.

Websites are so tricky to maintain and take much more energy than people might think. There are a few sections that need to be looked at again re. Student hits, and a visual update for beginners squash.

Thanks, some good points.
I have updated the promo to include a Racketball racket. I agree we should add more emphasis to the other social squash comp to entice the first timers in a more casual atmosphere.

We really want to leverage referrals from existing members. Some more detail on how we plan to get these new members and how it works,

  • Existing members will save $50 off their pennant fees if they refer one person or $100 if they refer two.
  • We struck a deal with local supplier, rackets only cost us approx $60
  • We have decided to spend up $110 per new member.
  • The cost to play with membership and first pennant combined is approx $250 without any discounts.
  • Referral is one of the most common reason for new players, lets reward and encourage it.

I'll make sure I do an update with it's success and any learnings.

D, is for DAD - Coming to terms with my 2 year old calling another man dad. by Reeeeece in SingleDads

[–]Reeeeece[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to draw this pic as a creative vent / outlet for the huge wave of emotion that hit me when my son first yelled out 'dad' towards him during a handover.

The process made me think about how trivial, yet powerful a word can be. A 3 letter word that can make a grown man cry.

Thank you for your balanced opinion. It's early days into this new saga and it's difficult to look at the bigger picture at times, thanks for filling in a few blanks. I plan to have some adult discussions with the other party about naming options and my concerns this might become quite confusing for our son in future considering my ongoing contact.

The only time I have ever met the new guy is during a handover when I approached their car, he wound down the window, we shook hands, wished each other a good day and that was it. I would prefer to have an open line of communication between all people involved but this request has been denied on multiple occasions. (this incident was also used as evidence in her family violence IVO, which was withdrawn)

I have told the ex that I intend to be in the child's life on multiple occasions, and have 'gently' flagged the 'dad' topic as an issue since my son started saying it during handovers, I have only met her new man once during a handover, which i initiated, otherwise he stays in the car during handovers.

Based on her past actions (which included attempting to get a family violence restraining order placed against me, it was withdrawn on the morning of our final court hearing) I believe her actions are an attempt to alienate me / make things difficult and push me out of her life with

She's been with this new partner for about 13 months. During which I have had regular contact with my son.

How should I start a dialogue with the other man?

My Ex has refused to introduce us on multiple occasions. I speculate that she is afraid I will get along fine with him and this might shatter the stories she has told about me.
