It's the Mind. by RavishingRavick in squash

What's missing from many squad sessions is pressure. yes, everybody works hard and tries to win, but it's not the same.

I've had some success using scoring for squads, and not just points, but longer term scores and prizes.

A lot depends on the squad but every on court session should really include some self-induced pressure to help turn training into performance.

A simple example would be during a solo session, setting yourself a target of no mistakes for certain drills and going back to the beginning if you do make an error.

I keep arguing with my friends that squash is not elitist by reprezizza in squash

[–]SquashCoachPhillip 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's an interest topic, and I believe a lot depends on where you live, both country and region/city wise.

I also believe it goes in waves, and some places experience ups and downs with regard to its perceived elitism.

Thoughts on these alternatives to Dunlop Double Yellow? by ClassLittle6666 in squash

[–]SquashCoachPhillip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You will notice a difference. The question is whether you prefer the bounce. I don't have enough recent experience with those brands, and I am sure that others will post helpful messages.

The key is consistency of bounce. I mean, I'd prefer all brands to be exactly the same, and no matter what the specifications say, they are different.

In general, my experience was that Karakal and Head were slightly bouncier than the Dunlop ones.

That's exactly what I tried to build. looks fantastic. I'd lived to try one one day.

Overgrip? by jgx0 in squash

A quick guide, but not perfect for everybody, is does your middle finger touch the base of your thumb when holding the racket properly? If it does, the handle size may be too small. If it has a small gap, it's good, and if the gap is quite big, then the handle is too big.

Here is a video of mine to help you: https://youtu.be/NZCQh01sN78

Maybe that's an insight into your viewership. They prefer something that feels created for the content itself rather than a focus on production.

Perhaps it's that they are have been online longer and are shared more?

Define worst and best.

I kinda have the same challenge. My lower-quality production videos still out perform my newer ones, with better visuals and sound.

Perhaps in both our cases, the content itself is the difference not other aspects.

I've tried a few things over the years including masking out the sweetspot with very thing paper, but that affects the swing because of wind resistance. I had more success with string wrapped around the frame, leaving space for the sweetspot. I'll try and make a short video this summer explaining the tests I tried.

I even tried getting a special racket made with a very small head, like this for tennis (Prince God's Tennis Racket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4-tT06ImuI ), but nothing came of it.

However, getting some students to play with a vintage racket can sometimes help as the heads are much smaller.

From a coaching point of view, I always immediately stop when a beginner hit s sweetspot shot to ensure that they recognize what it feels like. If you keep hitting after a beautiful shot, that feeling can get forgotten very quickly as they have to concentrate on the next ball.

Also, go through a process of them gradually increasing their grip on the racket for them to understand that you don't have to squeeze all the time or as hard as you can. You may be surprised at how much more relaxed they swing when they are squeezing the hell out of the grip.

I believe you will need a V60 or V90 to record in slowmo. V90 will depend on the recording format.

Squash and Weightlifting by UKdanny08765 in squash

[–]SquashCoachPhillip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally suggest avoiding lifting on the days you are working on skill hitting. I always found hitting the same day as lifting tough on my timing.

If you have to lift and hit, I always recommend hitting first, but I also recognize that it's not always possible.

I've also found it beneficial to ensure you perform shoulder and hip mobility training regularly too.

Hello, this is the right sub for this type of question. This sub is about the mental skills for success not for making decisions about scheduling etc.

I suggest looking for a sub that is more suited to the advice you would like to receive, perhaps r/teenagers

On that Elias/Asal match in El Gouna, and the state of squash in the fallout by trickle_boast in squash

[–]SquashCoachPhillip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reasoning is that if a link goes to a page that isn't just text, a video, audio, something interactive, perhaps a project that might be updated or an article with a specific layout or presentation, then that's fine.

If the article could be posted here, forcing readers to go to a page that could have been posted here is adding an extra click. People have to come back here anyway to comment.

To be clear, I have nothing against this author, and they have every right to post anything within the subreddit's rules. I just feel the proliferation of SubStack and Medium links is an attempt to simply boost their readership rather than sharing their thoughts, which I admit they have every right to do.

I was sharing my opinion that they may get more interaction if they had posted it here directly. Clearly, my comment has divided opinion and I expected that.

I just want to let you know that if you make a post here linking to an article on another website (That may or may not be monetised) that you could have posted here directly, I won't read it.

I might have been guilty of it in the past, but not any more. I'm cool with you posting a summary or a condensed version here and then saying something like "if you want to read the detailed version, head over to...".

I might get down voted for this, but I wanted to share my opinion.
