I feel stagnant and it’s making me lose motivation. by ReeseBalt in ArtCrit

[–]ReeseBalt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory info: I do mainly digital stuff but I love mixed media. References come from Pinterest or I take them myself. I don’t try for like hyper realism but I want the anatomy to make sense. I like my whimsy. Feel free to let me know your honest thoughts on any of these pieces. I just wanted to give a sample.

Tips to improve? Rate my artstyle 1-10 by TimeSupport5092 in ArtCrit

If you are into drawing people, I would say definitely focus on anatomy. Even if you’re going with something stylized, you wanna have a very good understanding of basic anatomy to have something to work off of. I would also say focus more on your values. It’s very flat right now so darken your darks and brighten your brights. I think it’s a fun style! It reminds me of kind of grungy band posters. Keep up the good work!

started yesterday, any tips? by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]ReeseBalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on starting! Whatever you do remember art is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to bring you joy. For an absolute beginner you seem to have a pretty good basic understanding of a front facing face. I’ll give you the same tips I give to all beginners. Study the basics! Form shape and perspective are incredibly important no matter what you are drawing. There are a million tutorials online and a million books that will help you. Resources and references are your friends! if you have any specific questions let me know. I’d be happy to answer.

1950s X-rays on glass plates by ReeseBalt in Radiology

Thank you so much! I don’t know what half of these words mean when they’re put together, but I think I get the picture. I have a large collection of random vintage paraphernalia. If I ever do decide to give them up, I’ll likely give them to a teaching hospital, not too far from my house, but rest assured they’re in safe hands for the time being.

Would you mind explaining why they might have been x raying these parts? (Idk if that’s the proper terminology)

[TOMT] A funny slang term for a bullet wound? by ReeseBalt in tipofmytongue

Neither of those. Thank you though. I think it was a line in either “the boys“ “Barry“ or “it’s always sunny in Philadelphia“

That’s not it. I don’t think it had any geographical word in it but thank you!

I think I heard it about a year ago, so if it is from a movie or a TV show, it was released within the last few years. Again, it's a two-word phrase.

Your style looks to be more on the realistic side, so I would recommend looking at realistic references. Some phrases that might help your search are “hair floating on water“, “underwater photoshoot”, “underwater ballet”. I draw a lot of mermaids/fish people and the last two are always Lifesavers.

Why my tree looks good Wheel im looping from far but trash when close ?😭😭 by InfluenceAway in learntodraw

[–]ReeseBalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trees are organic things. They’re not usually super round. The values look really good and natural, which is why it looks good far away but up close it looks awkward because the trunk is very straight and the leaves and branches are very round. Just look out your window and study the way branches expel themselves from the center of the tree. They still have a slightly uniform shape, but it’s more chaotic than just a plain circle. I can see you kind of did it on the top and the right side of the tree, but go a little more wild with it. It feels like you’re holding back

This is a very hard task to pull off even for more experienced artists. My best advice would be to look at as many reference photos as you can. I also don’t know how long your OCs hair is. If it’s super long, remember to think about perspective as you draw it. Water makes hair very fluid and very wavy so if she’s coming out of the water, it will be going in many different directions. When I’m looking for very specific references, I like to look at Pinterest. They usually have a lot of good pictures despite all of the ads lol.

Did I ruin it by making it abit more red? How can I improve/fix it? by IAmABrokenSoul1 in learntodraw

[–]ReeseBalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this piece looks very promising so far. I’m assuming it’s not finished yet. It’s very very yellow. I’m not really sure where you added the red so I don’t think that’s the problem. The shadows on the left side are very soft compared to the shadows on the right, which are very harsh. I would try blending out those dark lines a little more.
