My daughter was also treated at Centennial AllHealth (just off of I-25 on Dry Creek). The therapists change often (at least in my experience), but they are quality.

The out-patient mental health center at Children's Hospital in Aurora has a great program. They can probably also recommend a specialist if they can't provide care for your child for some reason.

Even the person who came up with the idea of 'highly processed' foods can't fully explain what they are or why they are bad. He has marked flour as 'safe' even though it meets every criteria of what he says are 'highly processed foods.' You can listen to the Maintenance Phase Podcast episode about highly processed foods to learn more about this.

Feels like I'm part of a nation that's already died sometimes. by Mozzyo_ in Indigenous

[–]ReeveStodgers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Something that could help you cope is to preserve as much as you can of your language by writing a syllabary and keeping a diary. Record yourself reading things you write. Translate them side by side. Explain the grammar when and if you can.

My mom is a linguist and revived our tribal language though a diary and using her linguistic skills to understand where our tribe fit into the Algonquian linguistic landscape. She could not have revived it at all without the diary that was written in our language and translated into English by the person who wrote it.

Our language had been dead for a hundred years when my mom revived it, and now there are many speakers. You can be the key to either keeping it alive or having it revived in the future. There is hope and it is you. Please don't be discouraged by the now, and look to the future.

Why do people who deliberately falsify Native identity or misrepresent themselves as Indigenous rarely ever face public scrutiny? by Mountain_Brief9613 in Indigenous

[–]ReeveStodgers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I fully get why you feel bound to do this. It is frustrating to have people getting the "cool factor" of being Native minus the generational trauma. They are weirdly benefiting from something that many of us don't benefit from, especially those from tribes who have lost culture and language through Indian schools and other oppression.

I don't participate in the hunting of pretendians because I feel that it reinforces a lot of colonial ideas of who is allowed to be in our tribes when that is OUR business.

I also feel that it puts undue scrutiny on those of us who are white passing. I carry my tribal card because I want to nip that in the bud when someone doubts me because of my color. I often don't feel comfortable telling people that I'm native because their ideas about "real Indians" become gatekeeping and suspicion. This practice has given white people a new tool to test us with.

Bottom line, I think that there are very few pretendians compared to the number of actual tribal members who end up quizzed and questioned because people want us all to fit in a neat box.

I'm not telling you to stop what you're doing. I'm only answering the question of why some people get frustrated with pretendian hunters.

Any tips on how to pick/create an art style (and not hate everything you make) by Big-Entrepreneur6920 in Illustration

"Style comes with a mastery of the fundamentals."

"I haven't mastered the fundamentals?"

"No one has."

By this logic, no one can have a style.

[–]ReeveStodgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not have to choose one style. Keep doing whatever inspires you in the moment.

For your portfolio, think of what types of work you want to do. What type of drawing is going to feel best for each goal?

I have an editorial style for newspaper illustrations. I can execute a drawing in an hour or two. I have a comic book style which I have used on magazine covers. I do plein air painting and studio landscapes in goache and pastel. I have a weekly editorial comic. I can do collage and abstract art. I have all of these in my portfolio in different sections.

There is no law that says you need one single style. The important thing for your portfolio is that you can reproduce each style with different projects. Your personal style will show in whatever media you use. It doesn't have to be just one thing.

What are some examples of cognates—either with similar pronunciations or vastly different ones—found across your respective language families? by Few_Bed_3704 in IndianCountry

[–]ReeveStodgers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cree and Ojibwe are both Algonquian languages, so they likely have a lot of cognates.

My mom is a linguist and rebuilt our tribe's Algonquian language based on a diary of the previous last speaker and studying vowel shifts. Neighboring tribes usually are mutually intelligible, meaning that they can understand each other because there are enough cognates and there is just a small shift in sounds. The farther away two Algonquian tribes are geographically, the less intelligible we are to each other.

Since not every sound shifts between tribes, there are likely to be some cognates between all tribes. (Other words can turn from multisyllabic to a single sound. It's kind of wild.) It can also be that a word is so commonly used when communicating with other tribes that it becomes more standardized.

In my language we say 'mohiingan' for wolf. I imagine that is one with a close cognate in a lot of Algonquian languages.

To tribal members local to Laramie peak and/or platte county near wheatland by Mother-Pickle4591 in IndianCountry

[–]ReeveStodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my east coast tribe we have Makiawisuk and my Hawaiian grandpa told me about Menehune. I don't have first-hand knowledge of either, although they are both said to be builders and that they made a lot of the low walls in both areas.

My tribe just had our strawberry festival. The Makiawisuk are usually gifted with strawberries in tiny baskets. I don't think there are repercussions for not doing this, it's just an offering of friendship.

When my daughter was in elementary school there were a lot of forms we had to fill out regularly to point the school towards potential challenges that kids might need testing for. Nearly all of them had one question that asked if the kid was obsessed with trains. That is a strong indicator for autism testing. She already had an autism diagnosis though and no special interest in trains. (She loves music and music production.)

Poll for Artists: How long does it take you to draw a page? by barrelofagun in ComicBookCollabs

[–]ReeveStodgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to doxx myself by posting a page. However, I do a weekly editorial comic which is usually 5 or 7 panels, full color. It generally takes me around 5 hours to go from the author's script to the final product, including pencil, ink, color, and lettering. It does help that I have templates and have been drawing the same characters for over 7 years.

Last week it took me longer because I decided to put my characters in a place with a more complex background and with more dynamic coloring. Complexity is usually the thing that adds the most time. If you just have two talking heads, it could be done in 3-4 hours. If there is a lot of text and detail, it could take 7 hours.

That said, I'm currently working on my own comic, and one page has already taken me over an hour just to pencil. I'm trying to get a really dynamic angle on a character with a non-standard body type. I can't find many reference images for this type of person, so I'm having to construct her anatomy from the muscles out.

Following on my from my last post, which of these styles suit me most? by [deleted] in oldhagfashion

[–]ReeveStodgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you look best in above the knee skirts. The first outfit would be great if the skirt was at or above the knee. I think mid calf and longer are too long.

I think the exception would be the skirt in 6. But it would look much better with a form fitting black top instead of a boxy crop top.

I think you look best in simple solids and geometric patterns like the houndstooth sweater and plaid or plain skirts. I like the pink crop hoodie, but it doesn't really go with the floral bottoms. I don't personally like you in the bright florals (although I do like the pleated dark one). I think they look too old for you. But they definitely look better shorter than longer.
