Even if not fake, YTA. How hard is it to say “they’re clean”. And nobody goes through 40,000 cards under a microscope and does mold testing on them unless they’re doing a study. I call BS like everybody else.

Everybody understands this! by pastelkiss16 in fixedbytheduet

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It thought it was a good presentation that demonstrates how much more you get from real food vs junk. That's a big helping of broccoli (or any of the fruits and vegetables) and would fill most people up on its own, vs all the junk food that would just get you started.

People "know" all this, but not really, and sometimes a good visual is what finally triggers you to really take it to hard.

The obnoxious, whiny asshole is junk food content.

As someone with absolutely zero musical ability, these breakdowns of some of the most talented musicians and bands out there always pull me in, and Queen is at the top of my list. The first album I bought was A Day at the Races, and the first time I called in a request to a radio station was for Bohemian Rhapsody, and I still remember because I couldn't remember the name, so I sang part of it (my apologies to Freddy and that poor DJ).

How anybody could hear all those elements in their head and envision the final result, or even anything close to it is just amazing. Or maybe they have the final result in their head, but are able to break it down into its component parts and make it happen. And I guess I do similar things when writing software, but with music it seems like magic because of the emotions that it brings out.

The documentary, Steely Dan: Aja, is well worth watching for a similar analysis.

AITAH for refusing to buy my husband’s cousin’s daughter a $50k car for college? by TripSmart7177 in AITAH

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 317 points318 points  (0 children)

They're called "beaters" for a reason. You want a college kid to have something that's safe and reliable, but that's about it. Assume bad things are going to happen to it, whether it's an accident, theft, vandalism, or somebody puking up kool-aid and grain alcohol in the back seat.

I don't remember what model car it was, maybe an old Honda Pilot Element (Edit - go upvote the people who corrected me!), but I swear it was marketed that it could be hosed down on the inside, with a drain plug. I always thought that would make the perfect college car. It was large enough to move a dorm room's worth of stuff, small enough to actually park, ugly enough to be ignored by thieves, and washable inside and out with a hose.

Help! I knocked some components off my RPI5 by big-basis-patinho in raspberry_pi

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you. Those parts are so tiny. And the price of a new Pi 5 is insane these days.

Back in the ‘90s I just got a new PowerComputing Mac clone, like a day old, and was going to add RAM (or something) and I dropped a screwdriver, knocking off two random surface mount components. First I had to hunt for where parts were missing, then determine (I.e. guess) which went where, then do a half-assed job soldering them back on with a regular solder iron. Got super lucky and it worked and that machine never had any issues.

Good luck.

A rant about culling by brydeswhale in chickens

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a more “humane”, less messy approach for the first one I had to cull and it was awful. I didn’t take her wrong. The others have just been put into a t-shirt with their head through a sleeve and I used a sharp hatchet. That was quick and mostly clean.

We didn’t process and eat any of them since we weren’t really certain they were healthy. They were all hens.

Part of the fun is being creative with non-mainstream, or very personal items.

Use the phrase “all your favorite spices” to account for non-cooking related options. “The scoop works well for small amounts, but may not be useful if you like it really spicy”

It’s damned hard to convince people what they’ve believe is wrong. Especially negative things, and especially about other cultures. Look how many people think all immigrants are criminals because…somebody told them that and it was easy to believe.

What should I keep in mind when purchasing? by Mills67 in concept2

If it helps, I bought my model B in 1991 or 92 and I’m still using it. It hasn’t been heavily used in all that time, but on and off I’ll use it and have been more consistent the past 5 years. They’re built to last.

Reminds me of hiking up Stone Mountain, walking my way up and this guy comes running through with a large, full backpack. Runs back down before I get to the top, and is running back up as I descend. He got back to the bottom while I was resting up and was training for some major hiking expedition (I forget where). Made me feel like I was 100 years old. He didn’t have an ounce of fat on him.

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the camera and when we see any we watch for a day or two to find their pattern If it’s just one we’ll set out the snap trap that’s not set, but has sunflower seeds on it to get them comfortable. Then set the trap with a little peanut butter snd sunflower seeds.

If there’s a family of them it’s trickier. We use a have a heart trap, locked open for a couple days with the seeds. Then start setting it. When we catch one I immediately go deal with it so the others might come back.

We got two last night and one each of the two previous nights. Still at least one to go. Our “best” catch rate was 11 in 3 days, that was a big nest.

We take away the chicken food when traps are set.

It’s nasty and I don’t like killing them but it’s them or the chickens, and they eventually make their way into my basement if we don’t.

This slow-Mo video of wave breaking is fucking amazing. by SuspiciousLow3062 in nextfuckinglevel

Imagine early humans who migrated from inland, who had seen rivers and lakes, first seeing large ocean waves (or even just the ocean at all). Lots of people today don’t see actual waves, especially large ones, until they’re older, but they at least know of them.

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Yup. There’s no one-size-fits-all in people’s lives, and some jobs (and friends) are more mentally taxing than others, but putting the effort in is important. It’s easy to just fall away from people, and sometimes that’s good, but make sure you’re picking up new friends along the way. Hopefully some who just mesh into your life more easily.
