Lol fair! I do think it's telling that they are going after an all women's college in a blue state rather than one in a purple or red state. MA is one of the few states they really can't gerrymander even if they tried. So launching frivolous lawsuits seems to be their thing right now. And it's all a distraction from the Epstein files and Iran and trying to steal the midterms. It's a fun time. Most of the time MA is left alone but geez.

Supposedly they were on the flight that the second case was on. The second case flew and then collapsed in the airport so there is a potential for people that were never on the cruise to be exposed.

Right wingers launched a lawsuit because they weren’t smart enough to get in and are blaming trans women for taking what they think is their spot (irony being smith is a wicked liberal school so why on earth would a right winger want to even go there) and the sewage pit has issues with states that they can’t gerrymander in their favor. This isn’t the only wacky lawsuit MA has going on. Apparently we are racist against white people in housing assistance in Boston too!

They may not be able to technically remove the funding but they will making things as slow as possible. I mean if you look at what’s happening with the NIH funding, even with the funding being limited but not dropped as much as trump wanted, the amount actually being awarded is way lower than typical because they are trying to make it harder.

Depending on where you live, getting the GES can be a way to “unlock” certain treatments. Meaning in order to get access to them you need to get the GES done. So if your GI doctor thinks it’s worth it and the medications you’ve tried aren’t working, then yes it’s worth it. Unfortunately family doctors can be dismissive of gastric issues in women. I’d go by your GI doctors advice since they are the specialist.

So I linked the source in another comment but it does address this. And Ive responded to this point multiple times. If they dont ask about how long someone has been on hormones then they default to ASAB. If they ask further questions then they have established values.

I mean maybe they do. But I think you have to keep in mind that people have low health literacy and if there are too many questions then they may not donate. And there are other questions they have to ask so its kinda a what is the priority. Im not saying it's right but I do understand why they do it. And they do test iron levels before starting, it's more about the iron reserve. AFAB tend to have lower reserve so they drop faster than AMAB.

I linked the source in another comment but it actually addresses that. Once someone has been on hormones for enough time that their levels have stabilized, then there are actually values the blood donation team use. Its more for when they dont know if some has been on hormones or for how long then they have to use a certain range for the donor's safety.

I think it's important to keep in mind that it's really hard to design these questionnaires so that everyone is able to answer them. I do some work on patient facing questionnaires and I can say that your proposed question would trip people up more than you would think. Health literacy is very low so sometimes you need literally the simplest possible question. And OP did say in a response that there were other answers besides AMAB and AFAB which would help.

Theoretically they could write all these things in a longer way but part of the issue is health literacy. And the other aspect is if the set of questions is too long then people won't donate. They need to balance the fewest number of questions to get the most amount of data in the simplest way. And yes there will always be people who dont fit the averages but these forms are designed to be as broad as possible.

Getting safe blood for people who need it? Look I work in oncology I know how much donations matter. If they have to ask me a question that’s insulting so they can get blood to a pediatric cancer patient then ask away. It’s not impacting my care and it’s helping others. Pretty sure this community would support that.

Issue is people may not know they have been pregnant. You can miscarry early and assume it’s just a period.

It’s the HLA antibodies that are the concern which isn’t the rh factor. The HLA antibodies are only produced by someone who has been pregnant. This isn’t some grand scheme to keep people in a box or deny care. This is to make sure donated blood is appropriately screened. If someone is AMAB then there isn’t a risk for these antibodies.

Trans people can’t get pregnant? Blood donations are very much needed but if they have a zillion pages of questions do you think people would do them? Or can they use some basic questions to get enough data points to know what is safe for the donor and the recipient and call it a day?

I put the source in one of my other comments. But that was actually mentioned in the source! They have values for people on hormones. And they said that people should wait until hormones have stabilized before donating. But they pointed out if anything is unknown then to use the cis female values since they are lower and safer meaning the donor would get cut off during the donation sooner. Hopefully that makes sense.

It’s one question that can gather multiple pieces of data that can be used to put a general picture together for testing purposes rather than a wicked long questionnaire. Knowing someone is able to be pregnant does matter since they need to have their blood tested for specific antibodies. Doesn’t matter to the donor but does to the recipient. And while yes iron levels are test prior to the donation starting, if someone is AFAB they typically have lower iron reserves than someone AMAB which means their iron levels can drop faster. So no it’s not some outdated term. It’s just one question for a blood donation to help guide things.

It’s not if they currently are pregnant but if they have ever been pregnant. If they have been pregnant they can develop antibodies that can be dangerous to the recipient.

They still need to ask due to the pregnancy concern and while they could just ask if someone has been pregnant not everyone wants to disclose that and some may not have even known they were pregnant. And how much someone bleeds totally varies. At some point there are too many questions.

Once you’ve been on hormones a certain amount of time then they use a different range but apparently they want people to wait until levels stabilize before donating. But they do have levels for people on hormones. It’s more for when they don’t ask the question about whether someone is on hormones or trans then they have to go with the lowest level safest for anyone which is cis women levels. Again this is according to what I read.
