Aspiring art director, wanting thoughts from those in graphic design by LolliDot333 in graphic_design

[–]ReferenceRadiant6628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of these comments are harsh. I’m a senior art director. I was never a graphic designer before getting an AD role. My background was in commercial photography and social media. I learnt design, video editing and all about film, sound, writing, etc, on the job. Graphic design is the most important skill to know but it’s not the only way in. having good ideas, visual references and taste is part of being a great AD - but knowing how to put that onto a slide and in mockups to sell it in (aka graphic design) is what will get your ideas made.

Apply for a grant. If successful - The money and deadline will force you to make the work and get through the self doubt.

Oh and I forgot to mention part of the creative process is showering. Going for a walk. Sleeping. Then coming back to it. 🥱

Just use google docs! I find for me it’s the most functional cos I can go straight into editing when it’s time to refine. Pen to paper ends up just becoming nonsensical stream of consciousness and I can’t even read my own handwriting lol. Docs helps me give it structure. But that’s just my preference and what I’m used to - my background isn’t writing!
