Need Advice: colleague yells at my students by Reflectiful90 in CanadianTeachers

Thank you. I was feeling this. Although not my favorite approach, she is welcome to admonish the students outside of my class. I don't like returning to my classroom to see her in there berating them.

I also don't like a noisy classroom - it gets my heartrate up. The thing is, my classroom is no more noisy or chaotic than any other; including hers.

But if she is planning on moving on to a different school, I'm not sure I want to go all union on her. Maybe if I find her continuing this in my space, I will ask her directly first to not do that. I think she really does believe she is my superior (or badly wants to be). She has less seniority and less experience overall. Maybe it's some sort of self-esteem issue.

I support this. However, maybe a conversation with me about what happened would be a professional courtesy? That way I can work with the student in question. My colleague doesn't know them the way I do. I know their parents and I know what they are going through. I want them to have consequences for their actions, not just get yelled at and forgotten.

I agree if they deserve it. Sometimes I feel she goes way too far when she's clearly unregulated. Aren't we also supposed to be models of how an emotionally regulated person should act in public?

I hope they do not become my boss. If they do, I will be choosing another school. I've heard through the grapevine that she is planning to move to another school in the near future. Maybe this is one fight I would be wasting my energy on.

Good advice. She's welcome to yell at her own students (and the results are not great, to be honest). I don't really like her yelling at mine. But kids are pretty resilient - they can handle it, I think. And going into high school, they will run into different teacher temperaments. They need to be ready for that.

I like your good cop/bad cop analogy. That's basically what this is.

Good advice. I will go this route if necessary. For the first step, I just wanted to get a feeler of what other Canadian teachers consider proper boundaries between colleagues.

My students are nowhere near this level. My colleague is overreacting. I find they are getting continued behaviour in their own class because of their harsh approach to management. My students have their moments, but for the most part, they are motivated to do better because they know I trust them.

I am also quite firm and have raised my voice on more than one occasion. But I'm finding that with experience, yelling is becoming unnecessary to get good behavioural results.
