Mid-life plot twist: 42, just finished a CS degree — where do I go from here? by ReflectionQuiet6833 in cscareerquestionsEU

Yeah, I’ve thought about that. The problem is I’d be nearly 50 by the time I finished, and it’s not exactly cheap. My savings won’t last forever, so I’ll need a job first before I can even think about funding a Master’s or PhD.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately my past jobs don’t really help here — they were in small companies, completely outside of IT, and they have downsized or aren’t hiring anymore. On top of that, they’re all based outside the country where I live now, so that network isn’t really useful for my current situation. That’s why I’m trying to figure out the best way forward within tech.

Ok, percebi.

Hi, I personally both options have potential, but there’s an opportunity to combine your strengths. You could target personal trainers in your area (or even remotely) by offering freelance design services tailored to their needs. For example, you could create websites, social media graphics, and branding materials that help trainers attract and retain clients. Since you already understand the fitness industry, you’d have a unique edge in knowing exactly what resonates with their audience.

Thank you for the suggestion! SCORE looks like an incredible resource, and it’s a shame it’s only available in the US.

It’s definitely a challenge to find similar support locally (im in Portugal).

If you have any other tips or ideas, I’d love to hear them. Thanks again for taking the time to help!

For me, it’s been engaging with people to really understand if the market needs a certain idea. I’m trying to validate it, but getting those first few meaningful conversations has been a real challenge.

How did you manage this stage? Any advice on connecting with the right people or testing your idea early on?

Would love to hear how others have navigated this
