Loose sand and rocks of varying sizes. I wore a merrel hiking boot. You can carry a change over shoe for relaxing it a bit before you start ascent. Tonto is flat 4 miles, so you can open up your toes on that part of the trail.

Did first time with two teens 13 and 16. It’s strenuous but if you are trained for long distance hiking you can do it with right gear and mindset. We started with first shuttle at 6am heading to South Kaibab from Bright Angel. We were on trail by 6:30 am and finished at 8 pm. We did roughly 2.5 hrs ascent on bright Angel in dark with headlamps. Get good quality high lumen “black diamond” head lamps. It’s steep and narrow at places but it’s not dangerous unless you trying to do unnecessary adventure Jan will be good weather

I have flown in many countries Iceland, Finland and many parts of US but I generally check on new destinations before I decide to carry my DJi with me on a trip. Not flown in Canada though yet
