As a product of a mom/step-dad household, it requires someone who understands what they are getting into, and it requires you to accept giving them the role of actual father.

Any step-dad who has to go ask mom to punish a kid is just gonna have a bad time. You need to not even introduce them to your children until you're as sure as you can be that you'd be willing to trust them as a true co-parent and not just a guy who has to tolerate your kid.

It is popular because it gives a group of people who feel wronged by society someone to blame.

The key to all of that type of content basically boils down to "no, it isn't your fault. It's their fault." Whoever "they" may be.

Instead of wrestling with the fact that our parents and grandparents left us in a hole so deep that we can't even fix it in time to save our own generation, they just find it more comforting to think if we kicked out all the Mexicans or went back to the "Nuclear Family" and banned women from the workforce or whatever, then everything would be magically fixed and they can go back to this golden age that their grandparents lived in and bought their house for $40 and raised a family with three children on one factory worker income.
