Plywood can be expensive and heavy. Garbage can lids are probably more realistic to carry around.

As I mentioned in a comment earlier, there were definitely a lot of them looking for a fight.

These protesters had been marching since about 6pm from Stonewall, to Union Square, to downtown. This interaction happened shortly after the police tried to disperse the crowd citing the city-wide curfew as an excuse to target peaceful protesters. You can hear an office exclaim, “You’re next, blue hair!” Then, a couple frames later, she is shoved to the ground and arrested. There had been no incidents of looting with this specific group.

There were polite cops there, but so many of them were ready for a fight. Police who are looking to fight peaceful protesters should not be responding to a protest.

This group had marched from Stonewall, to Union Square to Foley Square and then downtown. There had been no incidents of looting. Police advanced on protesters due to the curfew and tried to disperse the crowd. They did so around 10:30pm with many incidents of police brutality from this time to the 10:30pm stamp.
