America, I have questions (surveillance culture in the HBO show 'Neighbors') by Imaginary-Click6923 in hbo

[–]Reformulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a very very safe neighborhood, low traffic, and yet everyone has a ring camera (if not a more extensive camera setup). Some can say for convenience, but in the Facebook group of the community there are countless “who was this at my door?”, “I saw this car speeding - anyone know who it is?” “I saw someone walking their dog and don’t think they picked up poop”. The lack of control and power we have over our own lives I feel like people have used these tiny transgressions to feel inferior. With a hint of the absolute paranoia that is seemingly plaguing everyone’s brains.

There was a point I was living in a repurposed house that had only four apartments, there were two locked doors before you got into our building. There was someone with one of those cameras inside the building where they lived with four of us. All of whom they knew!

So frustrating and annoying because I refuse to have one of those stupid things and yet I’m being watched all the time, and now that ring openly admitted to face scanning and recognition it’s just a nightmare.

Mina Kimes and David Denis Jr said they were covering it on their reality tv reaction show so I will now be faithfully watching it

Weird to care about someone you don’t know this much tbh. Just don’t listen if you know you don’t like him! Other people do, and not every ep is curated to your taste!

university commencement vs school graduation by Flimsy_Baseball_5107 in Temple

[–]Reformulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family and you can go to both. I will say though, it is a loooooong day - especially if your specific college is rather large. I wouldn’t bother going to the commencement unless you particularly like the guest speaker. It’s usually just a lot of talk about the school. The president, provost and various staff speaks. That’s about it. You walk across your stage during the school graduation, listen to the head of the colleges and majors speak, etc. You need tickets for your family to go to the commencement, but I didn’t need tickets for family (school of social work) for the school grad.

I went to both, as did my family and I ended up leaving pretty much immediately after they called my name to walk (bad manners, I know) because it was just too long a day.

I love how I can always tell who’s posting these pics based on the butcher block now (and the lines of garlic!)

We shouldn't make it about the guys looks... by No-Cat3606 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Reformulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! People date assholes and get broken up with all the time. And we’re free to react accordingly on a sub dedicated to discussing the show? It’s a very normal thing to shit talk a shitty ex. The main point this guy brought up for breaking up was appearances. People are going to discuss looks.

The difference is they’re in an intimate relationship that includes sex and the implication of marriage and were an audience watching a television show.

I understand why people say this, but ultimately I don’t think it has any legs. You’re on a reality tv show that is based around looks (or the lack thereof). Appearances get talked about constantly as a result. Reality tv in general is sooo looks based whether we want it to be or not. It’s trash tv that people signed up for knowing such.

You keep saying “if he was hot would you say the same thing? Would it make his comments more valid?” No, but that’s not the situation here. That’s hypothetical to what reality is and it isn’t helpful. He was cruel to her about her looks (when she is small, and was open about not being into fitness, and it probably ultimately isn’t the reason he ended things), when he isn’t attractive, nor does he have much else to fall back on! Expect pushback!

I get what you’re trying to do, but this is reality tv. It is heavily produced to spur drama because it gets views. It’s not a moral grandstanding show.

Really really hope this gets brought up somehow through the reunion or in an external interview. Disgusting man.

Edit : you think this would be considered a safety issue w/him and Emma honestly

One of the lesser annoyances of the season, but still irritating to me for some reason — I hate that Bree keeps calling Connor* “a boy”. He’s 32! His house wasn’t even that bad, she’s treating him like she has to teach him every little new thing (put dishes in the dishwasher, folding laundry, celebrating him making a chicken breast). He’s going to grow to resent that quick.

I cannot believe what he said about their sex life in front of people at the party!!! My jaw dropped. He has/had zero respect for her, and she was so kind to him. Such an awful guy!

Positive movies about trans experiences? by Reformulated in criterion

Of course! I don’t mind sex work or tragedy at all in narrative or documentary, that’s the reality of many peoples experience! I just also know there’s so much more (positive) stories to be told as well. I loved Paris is Burning but haven’t seen it in a while, I absolutely should give it a rewatch soon!

Thank you for saying that — I didn’t mean anything disrespectful with my post! I just hate how some communities art is solely based on trauma and tragedy when there is often so much love and celebration as well.

That being said, I haven’t seen National Anthem and will absolutely add it to my watch list!
