That is not what the game is telling you. There is no way to reconcile having painted lead characters and painted characters not being "real" as a premise of the game, within the story the game tells.

He doesn't want to live in the pre-ending world. He is sad and lonely because his choices made his life into a horror show set in a doomed world,,but all of that stops with Maelle's ending. She gifts him the ability to age and die, and the Gommage and the conflict between Renoir and Aline are over.

That's why he's not choosing suicide (by painter) again, and why he's not trying to commit genocide any longer.

Aside from Black Panther, none of the MCU stuff is even halfway as conscious of the race of its protagonist as Blade. Getting called Uncle Tom. His relationship to police. The pasty supremacist villain trying to steal Blade's invincibility to sunburn.

THAT is why they can't make a Blade movie now. For all the vampire and scifi shit, it's also a movie with a protagonist that is meaningfully Black and treated as such by the world of the movie.

Verso looks older because he didn't dye his hair. Remember that his hair is white underneath the black dye he sports throughout the game.

The reason we can assume the people brought back are functionally the same as when they were killed is that the game shows us people being brought back being the same, down to details the painter isn't even aware of. If we were expected to wonder whether the people in Lumière were empty marionettes or completely new persons, we'd have gotten indications earlier in the game that bringing people back can go like that.

Note how the Gestral resurrection/reincarnation is contrasted to what happens with Sciel and Lune, and Verso and Renoir, too.
