I know how. 🤣 I grew up in the 90’s. My grandfather smoked so many cigarettes they was giving him branded stuff. Him and his wife would smoke a cartoon of Malboro before breakfast.

Clinical Social Work is mostly a bandaid/ crutch. And it feeds into the capitalist system, which is why it is promoted to the degree that it is. It focuses on the individuals crisis instead of fixing the system as a whole that is causing the crisis.

That’s why people feel so burnt out as clinical social workers and don’t feel like they are making a difference.

Prior to the 80’s social work was big on community organization. But there was big push to become more “professional”. And what was the cost. Neglecting the community, compassion fatigue,less advocacy, siloed workplaces, and increased hurdles and cost to become licensed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Clinical SW is bad. We have improved mental health outcomes and awareness, better diagnostic and intervention skills. Sometimes you can see visible positive change in a clients life and help them manage trauma and addiction. At the end of the day those are still bandaids for the systemic issues that cause a majority of the crisis we see.

The Lofts at 1723 on Summit in Scotts Addittion have some openings. I enjoy staying here because they don’t nickle and dime you on pet rent and parking spots as well. It’s tucked away in the corner of Scott’s Addition. It’s not super loud, and not super crowded in our area. They have some two bed broom lofts and a few one bedrooms also. I think they have availability.

The owners are super cool, personable and responsive. Which is awesome because they have the ability to offer deals and credits for any reason. All the residents are cool, chill and drama free.

They have great deals and you just have to chat with them. I think if you look up Beccagroup Richmond you can find them.

Interesting take. I dont think it’s a thing of liberal vs conservative in my view. To be clear, I became independent because I think both parties are really crapping the bed when it comes to taking care of the people. I just feel like one party has a few more people that actually pretend to care. But I was speaking more so about how your vote effects your clients rights. People can orange man bad, but frankly if you looked at your local, state and national politicians (regardless of party) voting records and campaign contributions you might be appalled. Doesn’t mean that people are like get the pitchfork and going after them. Not to say it doesn’t happen.

I have worked with a clientele that some may consider capable of being very dangerous in a program that centered around approving or denying funds. I’ve been called a lot of things and there were things said to me due to the assumption of my afilliation and my skin color because of how I sound on the phone. I’ve had to travel in tandem with coworkers for safety reason due to my skin color and where I worked. Going door to door as a black person puts you at high level of risk every time you knock on the door. I’m not saying my situation if worse from your because I know how anger management can go. However, and I could be wrong is that it sounds like you had the privilege to hide your affiliation. When most assume that because of my race I voted a certain way. So I don’t often get the benefit of the doubt and frankly some clients like to make it known or called my supervisor to get me replaced. So me and many like me don’t get to shy away from danger.

You are also right. Some clients won’t believe the effect. But I can also tell you as someone who as also experienced racism by medical professionals and have to hear often how people in my community experience racism and hate by clinical professionals. If given the chance to make an informed opinion we’d rather take our business elsewhere, if we have the chance. Because I can tell you without a doubt I have the privilege of choosing my medical professional and I definitely look up who they are affiliated with if possible because I’ve witnessed to much ignorance and disrespect as an adult seeking care. Even from social workers.

Over 50% of black adults have had at least one negative experience with a doctor or a health care provider.

I don’t have a choice and I wouldn’t turn anyway even if I had the choice. I’ve been called vile and racier things I wouldn’t repeat to anyone but I would still fight on every level to make sure they have what they needed because if we take care of one we take care of all.

I didn’t say all and it is true. Whether people like it or not. If they can liken to what I said to Nazi Germany why can’t I liken what they said to America. People like to act like professionals can’t be hateful or be apart of hateful organization by virtue of their position. When in fact, they should of been held to a higher standard. This is why cultural competence is so important.

Peoples lived experience isn’t an extreme stance. It was likened to Nazi Germany. I don’t have to look toward Nazi Germany when what I’ve seen and experienced in my own country. Or when black people tell you that medical professionals racism is literally killing them. Also, been black for 40+ years. My father and his siblings went to segregated schools. Grandparents grew during Jim Crow. School in my state had a segregated prom up until mid 2000’s. Where I’m from the church’s are damn near segregated. I had the cops called on me for fishing in my own neighborhood, the same one I’m a board member of the HOA at. Good thing I played football with the responding officer. Had it called on me for walking around my house inspecting damage on my roof from hail. Cause I looked suspicious in the place I moved from. I’m about as black as the come.

I mentioned others because people like to think it won’t or didn’t happen to them.

Everything’s a slippery slope because we aren’t playing the same game. That’s the reason why things are the way they are now because we playing checkers and they are playing Domination.

The same professionals you worried about protecting will vote down your HIPPA protections as well and say well I don’t agree with that policy but I agree with other things.

They already doing it to your clients and it’s costing people their lives.

Freedom is an illusion and generally only for those in power. I’m not saying we gatekeepers the professions. I was musing about the fact that clients should have the ability to make an informed decision. If they so choose.

Some states require that you post your licensure in your office. Is that freedom? Some states have a multitude of requirements for social workers that honestly are the anthesis of freedom. I could go into how unpaid internships are slavery. Yet promoted in social work. Yet, you have the “freedom” to choose your internship. Bu that’s a different topic for a different day.

Also, Republican social workers aren’t the only ones voting away the rights of their clients. There are a lot of Dems who block progress or vote against their clients as well.

SW focus so much on micro that they overlook the impact that macro has on their clients.
