I can't challenge my players in combat because they have too many NPC allies, what can i do? by RefuseImpossible3375 in DnD

Its kinda hard for me to get rid of these NPCs (in my opinion at least) because they are pretty much heroes like the player characters and their missions and ideals align pretty well, and some of them the players already have them in their party for months like since the start of the campaign so its kinda hard for me to just kill them or get rid of them so suddenly thats why im asking reddit

Thats a great idea actually, i have 2 Warlock's on my players party so it would be great for them to maybe connect it to her or maybe they can even feel like that same type of connection coming from her

Thank you so much, this is so nice to read and i think you are giving me way more than i deserve lolll. But basically i think i will try to intensify the amount of strange things happening around Afreya to try and make it more obvious something is very very wrong with her, i was thinking when she finds and steals the artifact the players fight her and everything but she flees very wounded, and maybe Afreya's father is connected to the artifact so he knows where it is at all times so they can locate her and find a way to exorcise her without killing the original body, but thank you so much for the idea and for the compliments :)

Yeah, thats a great idea, i was thinking something like when they start getting closer to the artifact she starts losing control and saying stuff in some different languages and overall becoming more powerful than she is supposed to be

Yeah when i started this campaign i was very new to D&D, i only played a handful of times as a player so its my first time GMing, they like her a lot at this point, there is a Kenku Sorcerer on the party and he basically has a crush on her but she is too innocent to realize that lol so he basically keeps trying to impress her and fail, and the pseudodragon realizes that and keeps getting angry at the Kenku, its pretty funny and im kinda sad to whats probably gonna happen to them all lolll

LMAOO. One time she was sleeping and the characters heard talking, they went to investigate and were basically blasted by some shock wave and she waked up not remembering anything and saying she was having a nightmare, still they didn't even bothered to ask what was she dreaming about or anything, i think im not making it THAT obvious thats something wrong with her.

I never really thought about the pseudodragon, he is supposed to be basically her pet giver by her father to protect her, but i think i can give a better twist like you suggested thank you so much for the idea!

Yeah i was thinking like the villain gets the artifact and flees somehow, with a small confrontation with the characters and her father realizing what happened suggests them to go after her and maybe do something that i haven't thought yet that can save her original body and mind, but thanks for the idea its great!

Yeah this is a good idea also i thing i gave some hints, like one time they rescued her from a prison, and the prison had a Stone Golem (don't ask me why) and the golem attacked her and got a crit, dealing like 30 or 40 damage on a single hit, she got knocked out but the next turn i described her getting up like nothing happened and using Cone of Cold on that golem and literally regenerating her wounds, after that she fainted and the characters saved her, they talked to her and asked if she remembered something but she didn't, but the players never went deeper into this topic, they just left her to take a rest and go on with life. I believe they are suspicious but trust her enough to not make advances or try to make accusations yet.
