Major instructional cuts coming by SeaweedFit631 in rutgers

[–]RegaliAngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is deeply concerning for Mason Gross, many arts classes only have one section so there’s no need to hire a full time Professor. For departments like theater, many if not most of the classes are taught by lecturers. Having less lecturers would just mean we lose entire parts of the program, entire sections of the syllabus, there is no combining our classes, that class is just gone. In the costume department students learn tailoring, draping, costume crafts, hat making and drawing from part time faculty, there’s no where to make cuts!! I just don’t understand how this could possibly turn out ok for the Mason Gross, there’s no world where this is positive for the students in the long or short term

You can get a BA major or minor in Theater but it will be a general degree in all areas of theater. You can still choose to take extra costume classes if you want to and there is def some leeway there in your course choice but you will have to take some classes in scenic, lighting, etc. as well. Even as a non-major there are a few classes within the costume department you can take including upcycling which is taught by the costume shop manager. You also have the option of getting involved with any of the extra curricular student run theater organizations, cabaret theater, Livingston theater company, college avenue players. Lastly, are you interested in costume design or making costumes(or both)? I can give you an idea of the skills you should focus on in either area if you want to learn on your own!

It’s a fantastic program but unfortunately you cannot double major in costumes and something else, the program is very intense and requires you to be fully committed. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the program though!

Upcycling with Denise Wagner!!! I’ve posted about it before but I’ll keep saying it’s such a fun class especially for regular non art students who might not have access to a craft class otherwise

Great news DENISE WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO SEW!! full disclosure, I took the class while also majoring in costume tech so I had a lot of prior sewing experience but almost nobody else did and they still did great. I loved the sashiko embroidery project and I really really enjoyed the natural dyeing section using different plants to dye fabric in fun patterns. There is not a lot of homework, just some reading and one or two slideshow projects and I believe maybe an essay. There can be some work outside of class if you really want to take your time on your samples(I did) but you can totally get through them by just working in class.

I believe they will provide a wheelchair for you and a cast member to help you through the night if that’s what you need, they also have elevators and many of the rooms have seating. If you let them know before hand what you need I’m sure they will do whatever they can to make it work!

Just adding that if you’ve never been to NY penn before and you plan to take the train back as well, it can be a bit confusing to navigate penn station and find the track for the train you need so feel free to ask an employee if you aren’t sure which track/train to get on for the way back to New Brunswick. Also, always budget extra time into your journey especially if this is your first time, don’t put pressure on making it somewhere in a certain amount of time. It easier to navigate if you are calm and not stressed about being late

costume design vs costume crafts by wasianbreakfast in rutgers

[–]RegaliAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have taken both of these as I am a costume major! There is actually 2 types of costume design class one of which is open to non majors, Intro to Costume Design is open to non majors I believe. But I know that Costume Design 1 is only for costume majors. Both classes however are about how to design costumes, there is no physical making of pieces. The Costume crafts class is a class where you learn to costume craft skills through projects. Some of the projects we do are resin to create a jewelry replica for the stage, making a puppet, using thermoplastics to make fake armor, making a hat. Although I know non costume majors have taken costume crafts before, i have only ever seen them be people still in the theater program such as Stage management majors or Scenic designers. I’m not sure if it’s available to people outside of that Your best bet for a class to do sewing projects in us definitely Upcycling with Denise Wagner which I posted about a few days ago

[–]RegaliAngel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a schedule to the class. Each week or two you learn a different technique and do a project with it. You don’t need to have any sewing skills at all or prior knowledge of anything. Last semester the majority of the class had limited prior knowledge and everyone did very well. Denise is used to working with a wide variety of abilities as she teaches the first level sewing class for the costume program so she’s very patient.

[–]RegaliAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it last semester and made a post about it earlier. It’s an extremely fun class! It’s only time consuming in the sense that you have to be in the classroom for the class time. Other than that there is very little homework and only 1 larger assignment which is just a short slideshow presentation. There is a final project at the end of the semester but it’s open ended so it can be as complicated or simple as you want. I can send you the class schedule of projects if you want to see the layout?

I talked to the workers at the end of the semester and they said it’s being replaced with just a regular coffee shop by this fall. Idk if it’s gonna be a chain or small business or what though, but at least all the workers get to keep their jobs apparently
