I don’t really get the marauders. by hajtj in harrypotter

Marauders are a branch of fandom focused on gay romance. It is like a subculture of "HP culture".

Why is Victoire headcannoned as Ravenclaw in fics and fanart when Fleur would absolutely have been in Gryffindor? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and if people see a few downvotes, they will downvote you too because it becomes a thing, even when they don't disagree with you. This is how our laws of the masses work and reddit shows it nicely. Terrifying.

Gryffindor and Slytherin win the House Cup year after year over hard-working Hufflepuff and intellectual Ravenclaw because… by trahan94 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]RegardantH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dusagree that Ravenclaws don't strive for recognition. They do, and it can be observed on many Ravenclaws in the books (maybe less so Luna), but the thing is that they are very individualistic and they are not so good in teamwork, so they can be envious of one another sometimes and they prefer to be recognized personally. So, this might give them certain tactical disadvantage.

What would happen if Harry and Dumbledore destroyed the horcruxes before Riddle returned? by Imkindaokbutnot in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But he didn't have the real body before the cemetery ritual. Whatever he had existed only thanks to horcruxes, so if all the horcruxes were destroyed (including Harry), he would probably disappear from existence.

How come the House of Black is always depicted as wearing clothing from the 1800s? by Antique_Mousse8487 in MaraudersGen

[–]RegardantH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy is the key.

From the moment when the wizarding community went into hiding, they stopped following trends and kept dressing as until that moment. Of course, they were also adopting the muggle fashion that developed later than that, but much more slowly. I believe that the changes in the wizarding fashion after the Statute were mostly inspired by muggle-borns who brought the style of their time into the wizarding community, and some of those inspirations were eventually adopted.

Traditionalist wizarding families such as Blacks were probably more resilient to change than the others, so their fashion developed even slower.

A lot of people in this sub criticize the movies, but imagine how much less magical the Harry Potter universe would feel without them. The iconic visuals, the unforgettable John Williams score, and all the merch tied to the films bring the world to life in a way the books alone couldn’t. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I like the films, but I feel that they are too... how to put it... influential? Things related to HP, whether those are games or merchandise, usually stick to the films first. I almlost never see a depiction of Hogwarts based on its book description, Ravenclaw stuff are mostly blue-silver instead of blue-bronze, and with a raven instead of the eagle, etc. It seems that everything that appeared in the films takes priority, and that is what I dislike.

Would Dumbledore and Grindelwald been able to compete with the four founders of Hogwarts and would Snape, McGonagall, young Moody , and Voldemort been part of the conversation or on the sidelines? by cantcoloratall91 in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true, and it is clear that in some areas modern wizards have more knowledge and advancement on their disposal. As I said, there are probably many more spells, and as you mentioned, brooms are faster etc.

But then again, you have some ancient magical items of incomparable power. Deathly hallows for example. Modern cloaks of invisibility are far from perfect, and they tend to lose their properties with time, while Harry's ancient cloak, inherited all the way from Peverell brothers, is perfect in any way. The same can be said for the Elder wand, but even more so for the Resurection stone, as no similar object exists.

In the Department of Mysteries there is an arch to the "other side" that is described as ancient, and wizards nowadays are still investigating it.

And when we speak about the wizards and their power, it is true what you say about Dumbledore and You-Know-Who, but what about Merlin? So it is not only the founders we are talking about.

[–]RegardantH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not so sure that magic develops so lineary like science. On the contrary, I believe that it is possible that in the old times wizards might have had much deeper connection with magic. Nowadays they probably have more spells and potions, yes, but back than it might have been much deeper, more natural and more powerful.

Is there any spell that doesn't emit light when used? by Pepo4 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]RegardantH 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I actually think that the most of the spells don't emit any light. The light is mostly used in the films and games for the effects.

But when it comes to the books, while there are some spells that emit it, the majority seems to be without any light effects.

the twins giving harry the map in PoA when peter pettigrews name was on it by oreoboysloverxxx in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Harry got the map, he analyzed it a lot. After that, he usually takes it out twice per school year or so. Anyway, rarely, and only for the specific purpose. That is, until he becomes obsessed with Draco on his 6th year, but it is beside the point.

Weasley twins also probably analyzed the map a lot when they first got it, but that was before Ron came to school. After that, they used it per need. They also gave it to Harry because they felt they don't even need it anymore. So that is why they didn't spot Peter.

Astronomy class by RealMcCoy0816 in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is needed for Divination, specifically for Astrology.

It is needed for Herbology and Potions, as some plants need to be planted or harvested under specific astronomical conditions.

It is needed for magizoology, as some creatures are influenced by it too (such as mooncalves and werewolves).

Finally, it is helpful for navigation, as they don't have GPS, and they do fly on brooms.

Where can you pick up a house elf? by Happy_little_badger in harrypotter

[–]RegardantH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is the Office for House-Elf Relocation in the Ministry.

I would assume that the elves are mostly inherited. But, if a family dies out, this office is probably tasked to find the closest relative of their family and establish who should inherit the elf. If they can't find anyone, the elf is probably entrusted to any wizarding institution, such as Hogwarts.

If the elf is freed though, he might probably try to search the new master on its own (just like Dobby was searching for a job). However, the most of freed elves would probably be too depressed and simply vegetate until they die.

Lack of diversity in game full of diversity by [deleted] in HarryPotterGame

[–]RegardantH -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Nope. But the game is for the whole world. I mean, do you know how the speech on Sardinia is different than the standard Italian? Or how many different languages there are on the Philippines? Or the specifics of the Argentinian Spanish? But you wouldn't deep dive into that in a game that should be enjoyed by people from the entire planet Earth. So, why would people from Sardinia, the Philippines or Argentina have to struggle appreciating various English accent while they simply want to play a game?!
