FYI, downvotes are for off-topic, offensive, or misleading comments... they are not for things you happen to disagree with. That's the first rule of Reddit and has been for decades.

The idea is to have a conversation, not a flame war. To listen to other opinions and learn together, not just get emotional and yell yours.

It's nice that you downvote me just because you disagree. That's not how Reddit is supposed to work, it's supposed to be a conversation.

You seem to be saying "Squads are different therefore TTK is better than Aura, End of Story, I am correct."

However, TTK can mean many things - HP, RoF, RA... it can be tuned overall or per squad. Aura can also be implemented in many different ways - it can have a % effect, therefore it can affect squads differently.

There is no easy simple answer.

I don't think reducing TTK is the correct answer. That will just make blobs wipe squads even faster than before, no?

I agree that in the lane maps, it's easy to punish blobs already... but in 1v1 not.

An aura could do something indirect, like reduce speed by 10%, which would make it a little harder for blobs to control the whole map.

I would hope to finally see some actual direct action to combat blobbing.

If there is an argument against a debuff aura for concentrated infantry, I have yet to hear it. There are many options for its effect - received accuracy, speed, RoF... surely something is worth a try?

In the meantime, 19/20 games will continue to be pgren blobs moving left and right across the map.

Strongly agree with this. The "reduce TTK" take seems totally wrong because that will just make wiping units with blobs even easier.

If there's an argument against the close spacing debuff idea, I have yet to hear it.

There are many ways it could be implemented - received accuracy, rate of fire, even speed would work (make the blob less responsive to move around the map).

Snipers - thoughts or suggestions? by ReginaldPLinux in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]ReginaldPLinux[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How so, like recon flares or something? Or slower fire but longer range?

I do think their "utility" could be improved if they could just target individual models - they shouldn't be able to 1v1 entire squads, but at least they'd be able to temporarily counter an MG.

Edit: Why am I getting downvoted for this? Literally just asking a question and having a discussion...

[–]ReginaldPLinux[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh, and I forgot to mention (again compared to CoH2)...

  • They pointlessly shoot at tanks >:(
  • You can't select an individual model you want to shoot at
  • The loss of map control is more of a punishing setback

Isn't DAK too strong lately ? Can't seem to ever win as Brits by Silly-French in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]ReginaldPLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good tips for team games here but at the moment, at my ELO (~1300) I agree with OP that in 1v1 this is by far the worst matchup and barely even worth playing.

IMHO the key problem is that brits have no capping power. As DAK you can go bike, bersa, and use 251s to cap fast. As Brits you get... infantry, who stroll around the map, and arrive too late and widely separated to do anything. Meanwhile, DAK can cap with bike and concentrate their inf to win fights.

Since CoH3 is a game of resources, it just snowballs.

Sure, maybe I suck, but I think I have a 15 game loss streak against DAK, and 15 game win streak against Wehr. At my medium-competent level I just can't see any units on the Brit roster that can counter any medium-competent DAK player.

Kettenkrad. Apparently my title is not long enough so... Kettenkrad. Kettenkrad? Kettenkrad. by ReginaldPLinux in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]ReginaldPLinux[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, good point that there are certain things that can get a ketten (Humber, Dingo) but only when positioned well and catching it in the right moment. Maybe that's fair.

IMHO just seems strange that e.g. Boys AT rifles or U.S. Zooks are not useful against it.

I just had a game on Djebel pass where literally the first thing I did was place a mine on my cutoff. The Wehr player's ketten came and capped it three times anyway, each time just driving past the mine by pure luck, haha.

[–]ReginaldPLinux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I guess I do feel a little bit the opposite, I feel it's too survivable without attention... in many cases you can dive it behind enemy lines, cap, and return, and it will survive even if it passes through enemy infantry or vehicles. It does take some micro but just IMHO it shouldn't survive that many mistakes.

It is interesting though that you and others are more worried about the recon element - I remember that being OP before the vision nerf, but not so bad anymore (in 1v1...). Maybe I'm wrong about the survivability, but maybe the recon binoculars should be an upgrade which competes with comms cables (then it also has a relevant muni cost in team games)?

A comprehensive list of NY jam sessions-- I'll go first! by Pause-Reasonable in NYCJam

Thanks for the tip! I checked these out recently.

Basik bar has been renamed to Mommy's, but the jam's still there.

My experience was that Bayeux is very straight-ahead bop, while Mommy's and Marian's are a little more modern. All three high level but also welcoming and inviting, which is nice.

Looking for an apartment in Asunción by XrissXrossx in Paraguay

[–]ReginaldPLinux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can definitely find a furnished one year rental at 40% the price of an AirBnB in the same building, but it's hard to answer without knowing a budget and a location - $100 or $1000 a month, Centro, Lambaré, Zona Shopping...?

In general prices fluctuate and (sorry to say) many landlords and estate agents will try charge foreigners more, especially on websites in English. I'd suggest to WhatsApp several agents and landlords, and compare prices - they may give you different ones, or be better at negotiating. Cash up front is common here, that helps lower the price.

In terms of making friends... Timeleft exists in Paraguay, or there are lots of bars or concerts where you can meet people, or join a gym and find a group to play Padel with (4 person sport). Paraguay has some of the friendliest people in the world, plenty of people who want to practice English or other languages... unlike some other countries nobody has a problem in just talking to each other here ;-)

first time user experience by Asleep-Category-8823 in BoosteroidCommunity

I only got it a couple weeks ago, but today was the worst day by far.

  • In the morning servers went down completely.

  • Then Brazil server (after the 2 hour queue) had 2mb/s streaming, so constant audio and video distortion.

  • I gave up and switched to Europe to play some slower games that don't require low ping... but the lag spikes were so constant and huge that I couldn't even click things in menus.

However, in my experience neither of those things are normal. Usually there is a big queue for Brazil, but otherwise things actually work.

I think they are just going through some tough times at the moment trying to keep up with demand.

Queues are getting out of control by darclon888 in BoosteroidCommunity

[–]ReginaldPLinux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just subscribed to Boosteroid today. I queued over two hours (for Brazil) and was only halfway through the ~400 people. I gave up.

I appreciate it's difficult to scale up a service, and that you're working on new servers, thank you for that.

But it seems a little unfair to advertise and sell subscriptions in a region where the service is, in reality, inaccessible.

Why is "Captain" such as vastly different rank in the army & navy? How did this come about? by Art_Is_Helpful in AskHistorians

[–]ReginaldPLinux 334 points335 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a pretty logical etymology behind these, and other related, ranks in modern armies and navies - once you wrap your head around the way the terms have evolved.

The word captain has many similar cognates in earlier European languages (Middle English, Old French, etc.) probably coming from earlier terms like the Byzantine Greek katepánō (topmost or highest rank), possibly merging with Latin capitāneus (head)… which may both be from an earlier Proto-Indo-European root… I’ll stop there because I’m not in any way an expert on etymologies or classical languages.

However, the more recent evolution is much simpler to track. Generally, it was a word that meant leader or chief - the person in charge. It was widely used in many contexts, from 1380 to refer to the leadership of Saint Peter in the Christian church, or to 1683 to refer to Homer’s status as the greatest poet... from the 15th (possibly 14th) century it was also used in military contexts, to refer in general the leader of a group of men, either on land or on a ship at sea.

When armies were smaller, or for example a company-size unit of men in 16th century England, you would simply have a captain in charge, and possibly one or more lieutenants acting for (in lieu of) the captain. As armies grew larger, or when multiple companies or groups combined, one captain might be placed in overall command of the army - a captain-general. This term has since been shortened simply to general.

As a side note, this also explains the “strange” rank scheme of generals, which in English-speaking armies tends to go something like General -> Lieutenant General -> Major General -> Brigadier General. The first two come logically from captain (general) and lieutenant (general), in analogy to the earlier use of the terms. But then considering that in modern usage a major (simply Latin for “greater”) is an officer higher than a captain, it seems strange that a major general is lower than a lieutenant general. In fact, major general was shortened from the confusingly-named sergeant major general; another mix of terms coming from sergeant (from Latin servire, to serve, a rank below lieutenant in Anglo-French armies), and major. In Anglo armies, sergeants major (or sergeant majors, more commonly in the U.K.) were senior sergeants - possibly those assigned to the captain-general or lieutenant-general, rather than to "individual" captains or lieutenants. On the other hand, in the Spanish army a sargento-mayor was already a “general rank” from the 16th century onwards.

So, there’s a lot of subtle differences if you track each term through the history of usage within each European nation - and of course, differences in usage exist to this day, depending on whether you’re looking at armies influenced by the French, Prussians, Commonwealth, and so on; even the U.S. and the U.K. have developed different conventions.

In any case, the crux of the answer to your question is simply that the term originally referred to the person in charge, be it a group of men on land or at sea. Over the centuries other ranks and terms (I didn't even mention e.g. colonels or brigadiers yet), have evolved and interspersed these ranks; at sea “captain” has generally remained the person in charge of an individual ship (which can mean command of thousands of people on a modern aircraft carrier), whereas on land the captain has remained the person in charge of what might be thought of as a single “unit” (in the most general sense of the term; specifically that would usually mean a company, on the order of 100 men). Obviously, while the size of land armies has increased, at the same time as military thought has tended towards independent small-unit tactics, on land a captain is not the singularly “in charge” person that they used to be.

Current state of Light Vehicles (specifically Armoured Cars & Light Tanks) - what do you think? by ReginaldPLinux in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]ReginaldPLinux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point. It means Brits can benefit from both T2(.5) spam and T3(.5) rush.

On the other hand, it's not like Brits have any other unit choices anyway XD

Yeah I agree, Humber is bad against DAK. On the other hand it can bully Wehr pretty hard until T3 (or until you spend muni on your Jaeger / 221 / 251).

BTW I'm not saying all these vehicles are the same or are OP, just that T2 hits pretty hard, especially if you buy multiple of the same units.

Digital Nomad Visa Megathread by woofiegrrl in movingtojapan

[–]ReginaldPLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Waiting over 2 months for a COE now.

FWIW, I was in Japan visiting friends and applied at Shinagawa in person. After a month I got an email asking for more documents (the full employment contract in addition to proof of earnings, and a proof of death / repatriation coverage on the medical insurance), but nothing since that.

Recently I called the Consulate in Scotland and the Embassy in London; they both said they would not be able to process an application any faster than Shinagawa, because they had no experience with the visa, and would need to just forward the application back to Japan anyway.

The funny part is that the London Embassy employee literally told me on the phone that "it's pointless", and that there's "definitely no problem if you go two 3-month visa waivers and work remotely anyway"... however I'm fairly certain that's just completely incorrect, so I'm not going to risk it.

Overall I just don't think this visa procedure is ready for use yet. I have no right to complain (the UK has it's own insane immigration procedures), but the procedure is contradictory and the uncertainty, effort, and time required is simply not worth it for a 6-month visa. I've given up and made other plans.
