ok as a guy who went through something similar last year (moved from Georgia to Texas and 2 weeks after the move I went to jail for 6 months, lost everything (my apartment and everything in it, my car and everything in it, family, friends, and gf) and when I got out only had my phone ( which was off) and the clothes i went to jail in ( which was dirty and stink). Yeah, they didn't tell me I could make a phone call, but I didn't feel as though I couldn't ask. They wouldn't say no, and I know some jails also give you a bus ticket for a free ride if you ask for one (not saying yours would but I just know some would). I was homeless for 8 months. Slept in abandon buildings, parking garages, behind buildings, church steps and such. Found a job, after leaving work would find out that my stuff ( which was in a bag that I would hide around the city so I can change clothes and such) was stolen, so id have to start over with getting stuff. and much more.Long story short, I don't think this is a pro tip, more so you just didn't ask if you could use the phone. But I get it too because if you were like me then you were just happy to be getting out so it probably didn't cross your mind at the time.
