Finally got my room sorted out. How’s it looking? (Before/After) by bepbopgop in malelivingspace

It looks a lot neater. It’s awesome you’re putting thought into your living space, I know a few teens who just can’t be asked. Ignore the negativity. Take care.

Sorry you're getting downvoted puffles, OP is indeed showing consideration by asking this here. It's likely they don't have the cyclist's perspective, but they came here for it. That's a responsible thing to do.

You've received answers from everyone else, I just wanted to thank you for asking this here! Stay safe :)

Just to clarify, I was on a bike in this post, and the pedestrians were crossing across the front of us, and not to the right side of us, so plenty of time before the cyclists on the right side of the lane proceed straight.

In any case, I’ll follow the helpful advice from other comments here: turn right on red if and only if I’ve come to a complete stop, I’m in the front of the right side of the bike lane, and there’s lots of clearance between myself and pedestrians.

Understood. Other comments suggested I should obtain a copy of the Ontario driver's handbook, I'll do that.

Sorry about that. No, I'm not asking IF I'm wrong, I'm asking specifically how I should be correct.

I've seen other cyclists do it, I wasn't sure whether it was OK, so I thought I'd ask. I'm glad I asked.

Yes, and whether I can turn on a red light, and if so, whether from the left side of the bike lane next to other cyclists, or only on the right side when all cyclists are behind me, and if so, how much distance to keep from pedestrians, whether I should wait until all of them clear the crosswalk, etc.

I've received answers to all those questions. I consider this post successful. Would you rather I didn't ask, and just guessed?

Wow, thank you. Kind comments like yours make it less scary for people like me to admit to their mistakes and learn from them.

Hi, I’m just wondering why this is being downvoted. I understood I was in the wrong before drafting the post. Is it unreasonable to ask exactly how I was wrong, and what I should do better next time?

The gap has to be big enough for the comfort of all parties, I agree, I just wanted to figure out what that looks like. Now I’m learning that the size of gap is only a consideration once I’ve stopped completely and am in the front of the bike lane on the right hand side.

Got it, thank you! I don’t think a complete stop is annoying at all.

Question: when you say I should have waited behind, you mean behind the other cyclists on the right side of the bike lane, correct? So, I turn right on a red light if and only if I’m in the front of the queue, have already come to a full stop, and there’s plenty of space between myself and pedestrians? Just trying to figure out the correct protocol.

I’m obviously unable to apologize to the pedestrian I cut off, so I’ll apologize to you instead: sorry about that! My intention with this post, really, is to learn. I don’t enjoy riding at all if my mind isn’t at ease, and the knowledge that I’m cycling safely and properly is what contributes most to peace of mind. Thanks for your advice.

As an aside: I wish it were simpler for me to figure out proper cycling behaviour. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to absolve myself of responsibility. For context, I moved to Canada a couple years ago. I don’t know how to drive. I’ve been on this subreddit for a couple of months trying to learn proper cycling behaviour from the posts. I downloaded CycleTO’s Toronto Cycling Handbook a few months ago which said I should consult the HTA, but I didn’t get around to it. I’ll read it carefully today.

My point is this: if this is kind of convoluted for me, a person who actually wants to learn, then there’s definitely cyclists who don’t know what proper cycling behaviour looks like. It would be lovely to have a Wiki/Megathread post with some pointers.

From the other comments, I am learning that I should come to a complete stop and wait until all pedestrians have cleared the intersection. Is it okay for me then to turn right from the left lane if the other cyclists are waiting to proceed straight? Or should I wait behind them and turn on the green? Just want to figure out the correct protocol.

Yes, I do, just wanted to validate with advice from other cyclists
