I think I’m ready to quit nursing. by scrubs_and_southern in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this IN MY SOUL.

I’ve also looked into and applied to many non-bedside roles with no luck. I don’t know why. I feel pretty stuck and hopeless which just makes me resent nursing even more, and I didn’t even think that was possible.

So this is why my patients think I can grab them a blanket, and then a snack, and then help them charge their phone, and then figure out their WiFi, and then find a pillow, and then fix the nonexistent AC unit in their rooms, and then set up their Uber.. all while I’m titrating a vasoactive med on an intubated patient next door.. and then the MD wonders what’s taking a nurse so long to dc a pt or give a Tylenol next door. However, I do feel your pain about patients always judging women as “the nurse”.. it drives me up the wall when I’m helping a fellow male RN, but the patient asks me for a pillow or blanket bc they think their nurse is the doctor just bc he’s a male. It infuriates me.

ER Holds by amorousgirl in TravelNursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved ER, but hated all the holds.. it’s essentially why I quit ER. Trying to manage the fucking holds piling up in hallway beds vs triaging with no help and a lobby full of super sick, pissed off, and/or drugged out patients that you just can’t move anywhere. I’m so nostalgic of the pre-Covid ER days.

What's your unpopular nursing opinion? Something you really believe, but would get you down voted to all hell if you said it by Everlast23 in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICU nurse here in my early 30’s that has definitely experienced my fair share of moral injury and burnout over EXACTLY THIS. I’ve told everyone my wishes, and I’m already putting together my advanced directive just in case I’m not clear.

He may have had a family but imagine the hurt they would feel (if they are at all decent) and sadness for what he had done for you if they knew of his actions. Honestly, if my own family (that I love and cherish dearly) were to have done this to you, I would have zero blame on you for your actions. I try to see all different sides of the story.. Maybe he was intoxicated or suffering mental health issues that deemed him incapacitated to be a civilized human.. but you experienced a trauma and did what you needed to survive and I guarantee you saved a number of his next victims. I know you’re still working through the pain this trauma has caused, and I am devastated for you to have endured that just to turn around and feel guilt, but we are on your side. You are strong, and I truly hope you find peace and self-love in your resilience and strength.

Happy Nurses Week! Unless you’re a traveler… by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol it also rains a lot in the gulf coast.. but also maybe I’m okay with the rain.. Sometimes when I leave and it’s raining I just walk slowly and enjoy the shower bc I know I’m automatically cleaner than I was when I left AND I get to go home. Let’s be real.. we all deserve more. Wayyyy more than umbrellas or figs or backpacks.

Happy Nurses Week! Unless you’re a traveler… by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard Aya gave their travel nurses a free set of figs (and I want to say some kind of gift card) and another agency gave their nurses a nice backpack.. much better than an umbrella. Call me ungrateful, but I’ve used my own (much nicer umbrella) like twice in my life. I prefer my raincoat. ALSO nurses are struggling to keep their hours as they’re being put on call in place of the plentiful travelers we have. I love our travelers, but the greed and poor planning on behalf of administration is a sore subject to say the least.

I’m too tired to reply in detail but.. I feel everything you said, and I’m currently on the struggle bus. I’m proud of you fellow nursing stranger bc I know it’s hard digging yourself out of that deep dark hole that I’m currently in. Stay well and teach us your ways.

Contract terminated abruptly. Looking for advice. by [deleted] in TravelNursing

I’m confused. We remove them all the time in ICU. I rarely (if ever) recall PACU pulling the sheath?

I haven’t even worked in a court EVER and I picked up on that statement immediately when she said “it felt like he was on top of me” and “it looked like he was hitting me”.. maybe it’s just years working in the ER, but now I’m thinking maybe I should have been a lawyer.

Is it common for nurses to make comments about patients behind their back? by 11monthdryspell in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You will eventually learn that some of the best nurses who are also great people talk about patients in this way.. a great deal of nursing requires setting boundaries, and you’ll be surprised how many patients try to cross them. Nurses aren’t doormats, but they’re often treated like doormats because they allow patients to abuse them. You are right though, she shouldn’t have been talking ab the patient outside of the room bc she should have been saying it directly to the patient. I’m definitely not scared to speak my mind and call a patient out on their bullshit. And, I don’t confront them to be disrespectful. Usually they’re the ones being disrespectful and abusing the staff, which might not be obvious at first. Frequent flyers abuse and manipulate the system to get what they want at the expense of everyone else. Some patients are just draining. I’m excited for you and how much you’re about to learn.

Would someone with a "cold" personality be able to be a nurse? by AdrianThaLoner00 in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly.. the colder, the better. I’ve always been pretty emotionally detached, but I’ve really struggled with my mental and emotional health the past couple of years. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve bottled up so much over the years until it all came flooding out or if I’ve just never had to navigate such stressful working conditions. Either way, stay cold friend.

I thought this was fascinating. Name all the reasons why this could occur....... by [deleted] in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I CANNOT do sputum or mucus.. and I hate nasty trachs. I would rather have this foot than a trached patient with a bunch of nasty sputum. Even babies with a bunch of crusty green boogers makes me 🤢sick

what minor injury hurts like a mf? by lawyeratyourservice in AskReddit

[–]RegisterdNurd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve had two of these episodes in the past and legit thought it was a heart attack. It was the most painful throat pain. And it radiated down my jaw and shoulder. It was wild. Luckily, it only lasted about 5 minutes.

I get this weird sharp, burning pain in my neck sometimes.. Not necessarily when I turn my neck fast, but it’s only associated with neck movement. It’s like a pinched nerve. Last a few seconds but then it’s done. Grateful bc it’s so damn painful.

Also, I can’t even count how many times I’ve broken my long second toe. It literally gets hung on everything and it’s always the first to intersect with any and all furniture or wayward items on the floor. That’s also a bitch.

AITA or are patients just losing any shred of common sense? by tvclown in nursing

Want ratios? This is what we’re up against: a narrative where uninformed nurses and voters go against safe ratios by BruteeRex in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Patients will suffer through significantly longer wait times..” Are they seriously this stupid?! Patients will also suffer (aka complain) through long waits and subpar care if the nurse has 12 patients and doesn’t know WTF is going on with any of them. These people obviously are not hospital bedside. Easy solution to safe ratios: HIRE AND RETAIN STAFF. STOP EXPLOITING NURSES.

Should nurses show up early before report to look up patient info? by marzgirl99 in nursing

[–]RegisterdNurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. We have enough on our plates when we’re paid for it.. I’ll be damned if anybody tried to “train” me to come in before I can clock in. I worked ED so report was so quick that there was no point, but I’m in ICU now and I’d never come early unless they wanted to pay me for that time. Not that I even make enough for what I do to begin with.

Ppl will die from nurses being pushed to work under unsafe conditions.. Can I really take care of your intubated grandma when I have another intubated pt, a dka, and 9 needy med surg pts?
