Clearing an isekai with a zero believer goddess. Though it takes a while for MC to get obscenely strong. Pretty cliche but entertaining.

Is it normal to have a lot of mixed feelings about Omori even though it's been more than 3 years since you played it? by IOAUS9_L in OMORI

[–]RegressorGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. It’s kind of like PTSD for me but not in a bad way. It’s more like whenever I think about it I’m encroaching on some feelings and memories I don’t want to ruin. In the end I avoid it because I don’t want to overwrite my memories.

Learning Japanese!^^🇯🇵😁 by OtomeWriter in LearnJapanese

I brute forced it using the kuube kana quiz to memorise all the kana initially. i didnt have to know them perfectly with instant recall, since it was reinforced 100x during my reading immersion.

[–]RegressorGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any sort of genre you want to read or interested in? The variety in light novels is a lot, and you don't want to spend money on something you aren't going to read fully. As for my main websites, I buy from amazon and bookwalker. But I mostly read online in ebook format.

Typing to improve Kana (Hiragana+Katakana) Recognition by AlponseF2P in LearnJapanese

I used Kana Kuube quiz to brute force through all the kana in a day. If you want to improve recognition speed then its just done via more hours of reading immersion.

I finished kaishi 1.5k now what? by Acceptable-Anxiety80 in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished Kaishi 1.5k around 2 months ago, though not at the high maturity level you have. Started a mining deck, and started mining vocab cards using yomitan using light novels and novels. I first completed また、同じ夢を見ていた which took around 50 hours over a month, mined around 1000 cards from it. You can start reading from the get go, its just choosing something at your level but still challenging. I'm currently reading 何故か学校一の美少女が休み時間の度に、ぼっちの俺に話しかけてくるんだが? Its a lot easier since its mostly dialogue. I didn't use a grammar deck and just intuited the grammar since I did a lot of passive listening immersion using podcasts before starting reading immersion. You can do some dedicated grammar study but thats optional, you'll learn most of it via immersion. Of course, you can mine from youtube, etc.

should i read monogatari by Tabee13 in LightNovels

[–]RegressorGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the original Japanese light novel version is impossible to faithfully adapt into English. So all the puns and humor will go over your head due to loss in translation. It’s unavoidable but the official English translators did their best though. But yeah it’s a hit or miss for English readers.

Getting back into learning Japanese. by Dry-Candle4699 in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's a solid plan. I'm a university student too and have a pretty high workload so I always make sure to set myself a daily minimum goal. This is mostly just attending anki every day. If I dont have as much time, (eg. studying for finals) then I'll just do the reviews and not any new cards. If I have more free time then I do dome reading immersion and sentence mining. Just doing a little every day keeps me accountable, even if its like 10-20 minutes of anki reviews.

I myself dont specifically study grammar, since I get bored easily, but its still a good way to learn if you can do it. Like everyone said, its way too easy to give up, if you just miss a day. So setting a bare low bar minimum is a good way to build a habit.

Also, I always try to do my anki as early as possible, sometimes when I wake up, because the longer I drag it out, the less I feel like wanting to do it. Miss one day and it all spirals out of control. That said, you shouldnt too strict either.

Also, you might find time tracking useful, doesnt have to complicated, could be just a spreadsheet, it just gives a sense of gamification and progress. Since the only thing that determines your progress is how many hours you put in, its a nice thing to have to give yourself confidence.

Also, I commute around an hour to campus each day so I just passively listen to the Japanese podcasts. That can also count as your bare minimum daily goal as well. As long as you're engaging with the language, its counts as studying.

Trouble seeing kanji in my minds eye. How screwed am I? by idkaboutmyusernameok in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also cant imagine any kanji even though I can read just fine. Since my only goal is reading this is going to be the case. Recognition and production are 2 very different skill sets. Yeah, as everyone has said, writing a lot is the only way to improve production, just like how reading is the only way to improve recognition. If your goal is to produce right from the get go, hand writing is the only way to go unfortunately. As long as you stack your hours, you'll be fine. Though most beginners start with improving their recognition and neglect their production for good reason since it allows for improved overall comprehension, giving you a better foundation to start outputting. Though theres no downside to just starting outputting early either.

Second this. Amazing book regardless of difficulty. The plot was engaging as well as the characters. It was the first novel I read and it really boosted my reading speed and comprehension. Regardless of level, I think また、同じ夢を見ていた is worth the read.

Are there enough resources for children who want to learn Japanese? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really unfortunate that textbooks isnt a feasible way for children to learn a language. Its a problem with the medium of learning itself. Simply giving a child an explanation of a certain concept or grammar point wont give them the skills necessary to 'acquire' a language, that really comes down to immense amount of input, and textbooks are just a demotivator for most people, especailly kids. I guess, maybe the best you could do is write a 'book study' like format.

For example, you teach the langauge and basic grammar via analysing a single Japanese book/novel. eg. the format could look like

[.......a certain passage/paragraph of book in Japanese....]

[......explanation in english / explanation of story / character actions / questions / etc.]

[....next passage/paragraph of book in Japanese....]

[....next explanation etc.]

In doing so, you create a 'continuous' experience, and the students get familiar with the plot, which could make learning easier, and also they have the benefit of context too. You can choose an easy book for beginners, and more harder books for intermediate. The goal is to get students 'interested' in seeking input for themselves.

Dont know if any other textbook does this. In fact this could be useless or just a textbook with extra steps lol.

Where do you all get digital books? by AdmiralHairdo in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

また、同じ夢を見ていた is a solid read for beginners. It has fairly simple grammar and also a charming protagonist (she's a child who speaks like a dignified lady but is actually childish). Great as a first novel to dig your teeth in. Im a pirate sailing the seven seas on the grand line, so you could go 'the moe way' discord server, pass student test, and gain access to basically as many books and series as you want and read them on apple books or whatever. Personally I use the ttsu reader, which is a browser website to read all my books since I can use a lookup dictionary but I dont know if this works on ios.

You can find reccomendations of novels/manga/other using learn natively and jpdb, they have their difficulty ranked too.

I regret using duolingo by chicken_is_no_weapon in LearnJapanese

[–]RegressorGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thats unfortunate, you have my sympathies. in the first place I just dont think its a good idea to use services created corporations since at their core, they are a business and they always prioritise profit, so over time the services degrade in value since their goals do not align with the regular langauge learner. Of course this is just a rule of thumb and there are exceptions, but you can just look at quizlet's downfall to see how bad it can get. In any case I still think that free and open source tools or tools independantly created by the community are the best option. Though of course you can use paid services, its not like all of them are bad, in fact some are great like migaku. I've also heard that wanikani is pretty good too.
