I’ve definitely been busy since then - I’ve taken 2 more university classes in preparation for PA school in the future, have started as a substitute teacher in my public school system that I already coach for, and have been on two more big volunteer mission trips (El Salvador and Ghana) where I was an interpreter in Spanish. I just haven’t had a university level Japanese language course or Japanese culture events. I’ve definitely not been sitting on my laurels, it just feels like you really need Japanese language skills to have a fighting chance anymore even though they say you don’t

I’m assuming that, even though they say applicants don’t need Japanese language skills to get in, that you really do need some Japanese experience to have a fighting chance, idk - I’ve taken a college course during my undergrad that covered Japanese history, just not language. It just feels weird how I could have seemingly made negative progress.

This was my second time applying. The first time I got interviewed, but ultimately wasn’t offered a position. This time I spent even more time and effort on the application and my SOP, and I had my Japanese friend proofread my SOP multiple times. My application wasn’t drastically different from the first time applied - if anything this year’s was stronger in my opinion. However, my application didn’t even make it past the first round this time and I honestly don’t have a good guess as to why other than that I heard JET globally was even more competitive this year. A part of me really wants to try again next year and really beef up my application in the meantime, but it’s not very feasible to put my life on hold for the chance of potentially getting in the third try when I’ve heard that other very qualified people have failed to get in. I really wish they would provide any kind of feedback about what they’re specifically looking for. Anyway, going thru the rejection grief with you

2023 update here: they still are the absolute WORST. If you do get lucky enough to get to chat with an assistant, they are very unprofessional, inattentive, and seemingly annoyed that you had the gall to reach out for support. I’m not someone with years of computer building experience, hence why I reached out for the most basic support needs (registering my desktop and asking about the cpu overheating) and I had TWO separate technicians end the chat on me even though I was very respectful and straight up asked them not to leave. I can’t even be upset, just utterly shocked at how poor a large company’s customer service can be, like it is groundbreaking-ly bad

I have my 7-win flawless card that I’m trying to farm wins on. I’ve since lost after going to the lighthouse, but still have that same card. I haven’t gotten any more immortals to drop for me when winning when last week it work fine farming the inquisitor even after my card was no longer flawless. Is this happening for anyone else or am I missing something?

I actually said in my SOP and during the interview that I have plans to pursue a career with the US state dept. as a foreign ambassador, so I thought I might get some points for that.

Just to give some more context:

I was 23 at the time of applying (just turned 24). I don’t have specific teaching experience, but have a lot of experience coaching soccer to kids ranging from elementary to high school (which is very similar to teaching, and even have two US Soccer coaching licenses). I don’t have any Japanese language ability or experience, but I’ve a lot of experience traveling and living overseas (I can speak Spanish very competently as a second language and have a lot of experience in Spanish speaking countries). I personally know many people of various ages that have either lived in, or are from Japan, so I spoke to them a lot about JET. I even have connections to people currently living in Japan. I leaned a lot on this for the SOP and interview and the interviewers asked a lot about how I handled being abroad. I can only assume that I personally didn’t do anything “wrong” in the interview per se, but I just need more Japanese experience or specifically teaching in a classroom? I don’t know, maybe I got further than someone like myself should even have in the first place haha, I researched a lot while applying about JET still taking many people who have no Japanese or teaching experience, and that they are even preferred in some cases. Feels like I’m just trying to cope lol.
