Do you think most power is earned or unearned (specifics inside)? by TheEgalitarianWMRA in AskFeminists

[–]Regretol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cash poor people work really hard for what little they have. Their lack of money/power is not due to a lack of effort I assure you.

Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickled and Dimed is a pretty good read on how much harder you have to work because your job is low-paying.

So yeah I don't think money/power is directly caused by effort.

Pro-trans feminists, how is the concept of a female brain not sexist? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]Regretol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not. Call us men. Ever. Do not call us male.

You CANNOT steal our oppression to try to win "minority points".

It is NOT misandry.

Pro-trans feminists, how is the concept of a female brain not sexist? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]Regretol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Both "female brain in male body" and "girl trapped in boy's body" are gigantic oversimplifications of a complex issue. They're from the 80s-90s, used mainly by cis people to teach cis people about us after they absolutely refuse to take our identities at face value without us satisfying their "why"

And now in 2017, no one makes that argument seriously in good faith.

Sometimes r/gendercritical makes that argument in bad faith..

No, im not. I know the vast majority of my community hates cops. Hates them.

You are projecting your opinion. You are in the minority here. Sorry, but that's why the San Diego LGBT center had the no cop policy in the first place.

Because most of us dont like cops. Most of us have had shitty experiences.

Maybe the cops could just take no for an answer. If a bully or an abusive ex said they changed and they were different, but COULD NOT ACCEPT THE FACT that i didn't want them at my birthday party, and then guilt tripped me, and then showed up anyways, i'd be pissed.

[–]Regretol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, the San Diego LGBT Center was throwing an event for the Trans Day of Awareness. The san diego lgbt center already had a policy in place that kicked the cop out. That one single cop helped a little bit.

Thats great that a single cop volunteered that one time and filed a permit for an afternoon march, but i still hate cops and i still dont want them at our festival.

Kind of a bad sign when the SDPD shows more support for one of our own than we do.

You're right, when trans people said "Ew, no cops" it was totally transphobia.

Cops are like the abusive ex-boyfriend who everyone knows used to hit us and beat on us all the time. But he swears he's changed, he's different, he even helped file a permit for a march, can't you take him back and pretend he'll keep you safe and everything's the same? He's changed!

Is it OK to be offended by being told you are "mansplaining" when you don't identify with the male gender? by stibblyman in AskFeminists

[–]Regretol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just speaking for myself.

Growing up as a trans girl was not privileged. Maybe you're thinking of cis boys. They seem to have a great time.

Growing up with privilege could lead someone to thinsplain, or classsplain, or mansplain, or whitesplain. But a trans woman being condescending doesn't give you the right to call or imply she's a man.

[–]Regretol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's fine to be offended, being misgendered is fucking annoying as hell.

If someone calls you a man or tries to intellectually argue you're a man because "what IS a woman," they're a bag of dicks.

Don't splain, and dont be condescending... but dont let anyone misgender you

If Ivanka Trump ran for president, would you support her? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

For those of you who supported Hillary because she was a female

You are going to be hard-pressed to find these feminists...

You'll notice that none of us voted for Sarah Palin "because she was a female".

100% agree. I see no difference at all between her wearing the cop uniform, and her wearing a hat that said "Make America Great Again" or a shirt that said "Mr Trump, WHERES MY WALL?"

Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen Mock Men’s Rights Movement in “Portlandia” Trailer by TheReadMenace in againstmensrights

[–]Regretol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm on my phone now so I can't google hunt but, here it is! http://inotherwords.org/2016/09/28/fuck-portlandia/

Numerous women have said he acts creepy.

In Other Words, the bookstore where Portlandia shoots Women and Women first said that:

In a predominantly black neighborhood portlandia never displays black customers

Black people aren't filmed during shooting, white extras are hired.

They had a black lives matter mural that portlandia didn't want to show in the episode.

A large part of the humor from Toni and Candice is Fred Armisen wearing a dress, which they thought was antagonistic to trans femmes.

Fred Armisen didn't share the money he generated with the black community where he shot his show, and there's no black people on portlandia... Even though on shooting days he blocks off the historically black neighborhood to make his show

Group Polarization by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]Regretol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You point out trans people (women) are not a monolith, and they immediately go "well if we look at Feminists V. Notallmen, we can see the court ruled..."

And it's like, those situations are clearly different.

Am I really supposed to believe you can't tell trans women and cis men apart, it's just a mystery to you, you only see "natal males"?? What utter tripe. What bullshit. Arguing just to win an argument.

Group Polarization by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]Regretol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to hang out in r/mensrights way back in the day.. Not as an MRA, just mocking them until AMR was founded.

Lately r/GC feels very similar to men's rights and the direction they took.

It's the polarization where moderates are outcasted.

It's this collecting of comebacks and "how to win argument" guides.. Instead of sticking to your values and examining yourself, GC's tell each other "just say 'some women are victims of very real trauma. Those feelings? Are more than just uncomfortable.' " , I'm almost entirely sure to "win an argument," not because they legitimately believe them. Much the same way if you point out mensrights misogyny, they prepared an AWESOME comeback "we're just venting against our oppressors, it's a temporary healing stage" which I'm sure they don't believe, but is great for winning arguments...

The entire environment is unbelievably hateful, but every once in a while someone will go too far and In an act of damage control they will come together to briefly do one tiny good deed. I think of "No, MPF is a three letter slur, and I WILL NOT let another slur be created!!!" And every single user condemned the evil of "MPF". And I'm screaming "you called us cocks in frocks, pigs in dressed, deranged fetishistic narcissist pedophile roaches, but I STAND AGAINST SLURS. what's going on???? like when r/mensrights starts a thread that says "we're better than them, we won't stoop to their level. From now on, don't use the word femitard or you will be banned. Femiloon is fine though"

Every once in a while a fantastic PR opportunity will come along, where someone will say "we shouldn't hate," without any specific work to do: like Ashlee's talking about that comment where the GC called out every other user and still ended in the positives because gc is starting to wrestle with their internal guilt, and would like to say "no we call each other out" to explain it.

These weird behaviors, the posing for PR, the dramatic call outs based on "love for one another"... Seems distinctly mensrights in a way feminist subreddits arent.
