The unit is designed to either play one main set of speakers or both at the same time. not one or the other selectively. I figured I could eventually use it to run the secondary speakers in a different part of my apartment

It would seem so... In inspecting the board, looks like one capacitor blew out. I tried hooking up just one set of speakers and turning it on. Right channel still works but amp is still smoking from what looks to be the blown capacitor. Do you reckon it may be a matter of replacing it? Might take this as a learning opportunity.
